A Reading by NateL-Shaped Corner Bench Cushions

Leopard L-shaped banquette cushions, and the fastening question: grip, ties, loops or zip

Nate reads a leopard breakfast corner built as two lift-off pieces, then works out how each piece should stay put without locking up the storage underneath.

The quick answer

Make an L-shaped bench cushion for a storage banquette as two straight pieces: the long run covers the corner, and the short run is the wall length minus the seat depth. Loose seats that lift off suit a non-slip base, ties need something to tie to, rod-hung backs need loop drop and strap width, and zips face the wall.

Two pieces, one corner, zero diagonal seams

Two cushions, one corner, zero diagonal seams. That is how this leopard L-shaped bench cushion set is built, and it is the right call for a storage banquette.

The long run covers the corner and the short run butts against its side. Each piece lifts off on its own, so the cream shaker lids open without anyone wrestling one big L-shaped slab. A single L-shaped cushion would need a seam at the corner, and that seam would be the weakest line in the kitchen. The corner joint guide shows which piece should own it.

Measure it this way, partner: decide which run is long before you call anyone. The other cushion is shortened by the long one's seat depth. With an 18 in (46 cm) deep seat on the long run, the short cushion is the short wall's length minus 18 in. Tolerance is kindness to your future self, so hold your tape to ± 1/4 in on both.

The styling earns its place. The print is a cotton canvas with self piping, so the edge adds no second pattern. Mustard velvet picks up the gold in the leopard, a sage ruffle calms it, and the tasseled black pillow repeats the spindle-back chairs across the round oak table, which lets people slide in from either run. The rattan pendant matches the honey tones; the jars and chopping boards keep it a working kitchen nook.

Which run is the long one in your kitchen? Settle that, then the fastening question: how each piece stays put without locking the storage shut.

Five pins: the two-piece corner joint, the mustard velvet pillow, the tasseled black pillow, the round oak table and the rattan pendant.

  1. Two-piece corner joint

The back cushion butts against the side of the long run, so each lifts off separately to reach the storage.

  2. Mustard velvet pillow

Mustard picks up the warm gold in the leopard.

  3. Tasselled black pillow

Black tassels repeat the spindle chairs at the table.

  4. Round oak table

A round table eases the corner and lets people slide in from either side.

  5. Rattan pendant

Rattan above the table matches the honey tones in the print.

A real project

An L split in two, with backs hung from a gold rod

A buyer wrote in about an L-shaped reading bench after seeing a finished photo of a striped cotton cushion. They chose to split the L into two straight seats, 70 x 18 in (178 x 46 cm) and 102 x 18 in (259 x 46 cm), and the workshop recommended 3 in (7.5 cm) over 2 in (5 cm) of thickness.

The backs were the interesting part. The buyer wanted them hanging from a gold rod, each on two sewn fabric loops of about 5-6 in (13-15 cm). Planned sizes were two at 18 x 60 in (46 x 152 cm) and one at 18 x 70 in (46 x 178 cm), 1-2 in (2.5-5 cm) thick. The workshop agreed and priced it as a custom set once the sizes were final.

That is a fastening decision made on paper, before a single cut. Loop drop and strap width go on the drawing, the same way ties do. More lines like that one live in striped cotton and ticking, and the non-slip and ties guide covers the seats.

Sizes
Seats 70 x 18 in (178 x 46 cm) and 102 x 18 in (259 x 46 cm), 3 in thick; backs 2 at 18 x 60 in and 1 at 18 x 70 in, 1-2 in thick; loops about 5-6 in

The lesson: Split an L into two straight pieces; rod-hung backs need the loop drop and strap width specified.

Buyer questions: recheck first, nearest size, uncompressed covers

  1. A common question

Before I pay for a custom 13 x 35 1/2 in (33 x 90 cm) window seat cushion, is it worth measuring again?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. One buyer got a quote for exactly that size, rechecked the window, and found that a standard listed size worked instead.

  2. A common question

I need a black window seat cushion 11 3/8 in wide and 50 3/8 in long (29 x 128 cm). How do I order it?

    The workshop's answer

Choose the nearest larger listed size, 11 3/4 x 55 in (30 x 140 cm), and place the order with your exact measurements. The cushion is made to the sizes you give.

  3. A common question

Can the cover ship without being compressed together with the cushion?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The request goes to the packing team, and the cover travels in the same package without being compressed along with the backrest.

Questions buyers ask next

Is a two-piece L cushion better than a single L shape on a storage bench?

For a storage banquette, usually yes. One run covers the corner and the other butts against it, so each lifts off separately to reach the storage, and there is no weak diagonal seam where the two runs meet.

How do I stop a loose banquette seat cushion from sliding?

A non-slip base suits a seat that must still lift off for storage. Ties need a rail, leg or spindle to tie to, which a boxed shaker banquette rarely offers, so grip underneath is the more practical answer.

Where should the zipper go on a kitchen bench cushion?

On the edge that faces the wall, so the cover still comes off for washing but the zip stays out of sight and away from knees. Write it on the order next to the sizes so nobody has to guess.

How thick should seat cushions be on an L-shaped reading bench?

For one L-shaped reading bench with 18 in (46 cm) deep seats, the workshop recommended 3 in (7.5 cm) over 2 in (5 cm). Thinner back cushions, 1-2 in, were planned to hang on a rod above.
