A grain-sack striped bench cushion, read from ten feet and from ten inches
Élodie reads a painted bench beside a patio door twice: once from the doorway, once close enough to see the welt.
A French-style grain-sack stripe warms a cool blue bench, with rust and dotted pillows repeating the art above.
The quick answer
On a long striped bench cushion, stripe direction and pillow colors carry from across the room, while piping, weave and small prints only reward a close look. Run a grain-sack stripe front to back for a steady rhythm, then take one pillow color from the wall art and one from the bench paint, and add a small print that holds both.
From the patio door: what carries ten feet
Stand at the patio door and the striped bench cushion speaks before anything else in the room.
From there you see three things only. Espresso bands on cream, running front to back, cutting a long seat into a steady beat. A dusty-blue paneled bench beneath them. And three pillows in a row: rust, blue, dotted. That is the ten-foot view, and it is where a room is won or lost.
Stripe direction matters most at this distance. Laid front to back, the bands give the eye resting places all along the length; turned to run lengthwise, the same cloth would stretch the bench thinner. Our Pattern on stripe direction sets both side by side.
Then color does the rest. Cream and espresso warm the cool blue paint the way milk warms coffee. The eye sits down first, and here it sits down gladly.

Five pins, from the espresso stripe to the abstract print that chose the palette.

- Grain-sack stripe
Espresso bands running front to back break the long bench into a steady rhythm.
- Rust linen pillow
Its color is lifted straight from the abstract print above.
- Dusty-blue linen pillow
Matching the paneling paint links cushion and bench.
- Polka-dot pillow
Rust dots on cream join the other two pillows together.
- Abstract art on ledge
The print sets the palette for everything on the seat below.

Ten inches away: what only the close look rewards
Walk closer. The welt is self piping, cut from the same striped linen, so it flecks cream and espresso along the box edge instead of drawing a hard line. From the door it vanishes. Up close it tells you the cushion was tailored.
The polka-dot pillow works the same way. At ten feet it reads as a pale square bridging rust and blue. At ten inches the rust dots appear, and you see why it belongs: they repeat the rust linen pillow beside it and the rust in the print above.
The props are the palette's supporting cast. The abstract rust-and-cream print on the oak ledge chose every color on the seat. A stoneware jug and the oak floorboards slip wood tones between the blue and the stripe. An oatmeal flatweave rug keeps the floor quiet, and the white glazed door lets in fresh backyard daylight.
So which view are you designing for, my friends? Both, in that order. More seats in this family live among our bench cushions and living room cushions.
Nearly ten feet of bench, one unbroken cushion
A buyer got in touch needing a bench cushion 15 x 117 in (38 x 298 cm). That is almost ten feet of seat. The shop proposed two pieces, which are easier to make and to ship. The buyer needed one continuous cushion for the bench, and the shop agreed to make it that way.
I love that story for this photograph. From across a room, the join between two striped cushions falls exactly where the eye lands, and it breaks the rhythm of the bands. If your bench needs one unbroken piece, say so up front, before anything is cut. The trade-offs are laid out in one piece or two.
Buyer questions: sizes, codes and a narrow back edge
- A common question
My bench size isn't in the drop-down menu. How do I order a custom size?
The workshop's answerChoose the closest option, usually the next size up, and write your exact measurements in the personalization box; the cushion is made to those numbers. A 51 x 19 in cushion went through the 20 x 52 in option, and a 17 x 78 in (44 x 198 cm) one through the 16 x 84 in (40 x 213 cm) option. Sometimes the shop adds your size to the menu instead, as it did for 16 x 43 in.
- A common question
What fabric and color is the cushion in the photo I saw? I'd like mine to match.
The workshop's answerDescribe the photo or send a screenshot and the shop replies with the codes. A mauve bench cushion was velvet 117; a tan cushion with brown piping was linen L07 piped in velvet 110; a beige stripe was closest to N01. If the exact cloth isn't stocked, the nearest match is suggested, and your order can copy the photo's colorway.
- A common question
My window seat is narrower at the back than at the front. How do I order that?
The workshop's answerThat shape is a trapezoid, so it goes through the separate custom-shape listing. Pick the size range by your longest edge and deepest depth, then upload a drawing with every edge measured in Add Personalization, along with the thickness and fabric code. The cushion is made exactly to that drawing.

Color is easier to settle in a conversation than on a screen. Tell the workshop about the room and the light it gets, and the fabric choice follows. — Élodie

On a long striped bench cushion, stripe direction and pillow color read from ten feet away; the piping and the small dots only reward someone standing close.

Questions buyers ask next
Which way should stripes run on a bench cushion?
Front to back is the calmer choice on a long bench, because the bands break the length into a steady rhythm. Stripes running lengthwise make a seat look longer and slimmer. Ask which way the bands will run before your cushion is cut.
What pillows go with a grain-sack stripe?
Solid linens in each main color of the room: here rust from the wall art and dusty blue from the bench paint. Add one small print, such as cream with rust dots, that carries both colors so the trio reads as a set.
Does self piping show on a striped cushion?
Barely, from across a room. Cut from the same striped cloth, the welt flecks both colors along the box edge and keeps the outline crisp without adding a new line. Contrast piping would read far louder at a distance.
Can a bench cushion almost ten feet long be made in one piece?
Yes. A 15 x 117 in (38 x 298 cm) cushion was made as one continuous piece when the buyer asked for it. Two pieces are easier to make and ship, so state clearly in your order if the bench needs a single cushion.
