A coral multi-stripe bench cushion and three pillows against a dusty-blue wall
One stripe, one plain, one print and one small weave on a single bench, and the rule that keeps them from quarreling.
A soft coral multi-stripe and three pink-toned pillows warm up a cool dusty-blue wall.
The quick answer
A striped bench cushion mixes well with pillows when each pillow has a different job and scale: one plain that repeats the stripe's accent, one print that joins the wall color to the cushion, and one small woven lumbar. Here a cream box cushion striped in coral, blush and sage warms a cool dusty-blue wall above a white storage bench.
A cool wall asks for a warm seat
A cool wall needs a warm seat, and this custom bench cushion in a coral stripe was chosen to supply one.
The wall is dusty blue above a white chair rail: elegant at noon, a little chilly by four. So the box cushion on the white shaker storage bench runs a cream ground striped in coral and blush, with one fine sage line to keep the pink from turning sweet. The welt is self piping cut from the same stripe, so the front edge reads as part of the pattern, not a frame around it.
Above, a rattan mirror shaped like a flower and a rattan pendant bring natural texture at eye level. The white glazed cabinet with its dishes repeats the white of the bench. A jute rug takes the floor, and a potted ficus at the open end keeps a long bench from stopping dead.
I once set a ticking stripe beside a floral of exactly the same scale. Guests squinted. Scale is the whole trick, dear, and matching throw and lumbar pillows covers the rest. What color is the wall behind your bench?
Where the coral travels
Five pins trace the coral from the seat to the smallest pillow.

- Coral multi-stripe
A cream ground striped in coral and blush warms a cool blue wall.
- Diamond-weave lumbar
The smallest pillow repeats the cushion's coral in texture.
- Floral block print
Blue and pink flowers join the wall color to the cushion color.
- Terracotta linen
A plain deep pillow at the back gives the group weight.
- Potted ficus
A tree at the open end keeps the long bench from stopping abruptly.

Maggie's pattern-mixing checklist
- One stripe, on the largest surface: the seat cushion.
- One plain pillow in the stripe's strongest color, here terracotta linen, set at the back for weight.
- One print that carries both the wall and the cushion colors, here a blue-and-pink floral block print.
- One small woven texture in front, here a coral diamond-weave lumbar.
- Three scales, never two alike: wide stripe, medium flowers, tiny diamonds.
- Natural texture up high and down low, rattan and jute, so the patterns have somewhere quiet to rest.
Mix three pillows on a striped bench cushion by job: one repeats the stripe's accent, one repeats the wall, and one carries both colors at once.

A curved willow sofa, base first
A buyer in the US had a curved willow sofa and wanted tufted French-style cushions for it: a rectangular base now, a semicircular back later. She asked for natural fiber, so the cushion was made in linen with a silicone fiber fill.
The base measured 68 in (173 cm) along the back, 63 in (160 cm) along the front and 32 in (81 cm) deep, with curved ends. She weighed 4 in (10 cm) against 6 in (15 cm) and chose 4.
She loved it. So did her cats. She ordered a second base in another linen color and mailed the compression bag back to be used again.
Why the base first? On curved furniture, the back can only be measured once the seat is in place.
The lesson: For curved furniture, make the base first, then measure the back with the base in place.
Buyer questions: thickness, backrests and a corner
- A common question
Is a 3 in cushion enough on a plywood kitchen nook bench, or will I feel the board?
The workshop's answerYes. The workshop said 3 in (7.5 cm) is fine over a plywood nook bench.
- A common question
Our public welcome center has a 76 in lift-up storage bench under a window. Can you make a backrest we can hang with hook-and-loop tape?
The workshop's answerThe backrest can be made as two separate pieces, each half the bench length, sized to the 14 in (36 cm) gap between the bench top and the window, so each piece comes off easily. Hook-and-loop wall mounting isn't offered for now.
- A common question
I need a corner floor cushion with backrests, 66 in across the corner and 44 in along each side. Can you make it?
The workshop's answerYes. The workshop first checks two things: whether 66 in (168 cm) and 44 in (112 cm) are wall measurements, and whether the 14 in (36 cm) height runs from the floor to the top of the backrest. Then you pick a color number on the custom listing.

Questions buyers ask next
How many patterns can share one bench?
Three is comfortable if each is a different scale and they share a color: a wide stripe on the seat, a medium print and a tiny weave. Plains and natural textures such as linen, rattan and jute give the eye a rest.
Should the piping on a striped cushion match the stripe?
Self piping, cut from the same striped cloth, keeps the edge part of the pattern. A contrast welt draws a frame around the stripe instead. Piping is included either way, and a contrast color costs nothing extra.
What cushion color warms up a dusty-blue wall?
Warm accents on a pale ground: cream striped in coral and blush, with one fine sage line that links back to the cool wall. Repeat the warm color at least twice more in the pillows.
