The quick answer

A custom floor mattress is foam in a zippered, washable cover, cut to fit a toddler floor bed, a loft-bed nook or a sleepover corner. Common sizes run from 24 x 70 in (61 x 178 cm) under a loft bed to about 38 x 75 in (97 x 191 cm) for a twin. Order by the mattress's own size, not the frame height.

Shapes to choose from

Every one is cut to your measurements. The number is how many readings the atelier has published for that shape.

Sizes & measuring

Sizes, inches first

Measure the mattress, or the platform it sits on: length, width, thickness. The frame height does not matter.

A bed that starts at the floor

A custom floor mattress is a foam mattress in a removable zippered cover, made to a size you give. Parents use one in a wooden toddler floor bed, under a loft bed, as a sleepover bed, or as a play mat on the rug. The cushions are solid enough to sit or lie on and comfortable to sleep on.

For a proper toddler bed there is also a kids' foam play bed that includes its mattress. For children who want to sit as much as sleep, see kids' floor sofas and kids' room cushions.

One note, kept plain. For a baby's crib, go by the crib maker's mattress size, and keep pillows, bolsters and soft extras out of it. The pieces on this page are for toddlers and older children.

Shapes, corners and edges

Most floor mattresses are plain rectangles. That is a good thing. Rectangles rotate and flip, and they wear evenly.

When a floor bed has rounded corners or a curved end, the workroom will not guess the curve from numbers alone. Send a drawing with the total width and depth, the straight length before each curve and the curve's depth. Or trace the platform on wrapping paper and photograph it flat beside a tape measure. Rounded corners and oval seats has the detail.

A box edge with self-piping holds a neat outline; no piping keeps it soft. Oatmeal and warm beige from the linen chart disappear into most rooms.

Fabrics for small sleepers and sticky hands

Children test a cover harder than anyone. Pick a fabric you will not mind washing often, because you will.

Every cover unzips and machine washes at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. Air dry it. The foam stays out of the machine. More in kid-friendly cushion fabric.

Foam and thickness, kept low

For small children, lower is kinder. A floor sofa mattress is about 6.5 in (17 cm) of medium-hard 28 kg/m³ foam that softens slightly with use. A toddler floor bed turned reading seat settled on 4 in (10 cm) of the firmer 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) foam. A 6 or 8 in (15 or 20 cm) mattress sits higher off the floor.

Most floor pieces arrive vacuum-packed and rolled, flat and small at first. Unwrap every piece. Most reach their photographed shape in about 36-48 hours and full firmness in 3-5 days, sometimes a week.

Height is a feeling. Firm enough to crawl across, soft enough to nap on. Measure it from the child's side of the bed.

A real project

A toddler floor bed that became a loveseat

A parent in the US wanted to turn a wooden toddler floor bed into a small loveseat for reading. The platform was 53.5 x 29.5 in (136 x 75 cm), on a frame 21 in (53 cm) high. The questions were the right ones: how thick, how firm, how many pieces.

Two layouts fit. A 5-piece set in linen with contrast piping, a seat, two back cushions and two side bolsters, looked fuller and cost about double a seat with one long back bolster. Only the cushions' own dimensions mattered, not the frame height. The parent settled on 4 in (10 cm) of the firm 32 kg/m³ foam.

Measured
Platform 53.5 x 29.5 in; frame 21 in high; 4 in thick
What it taught
Send the cushion's own dimensions; more pieces look fuller and cost more.

Small mistakes with floor beds

  • Sending the frame height instead of the mattress size. Only the cushion's own length, width and thickness matter.
  • Judging a vacuum-packed mattress in its first hours. Flat and folded is normal; give it 36-48 hours, and up to 5 days for full firmness.
  • Laying a floor mattress on bare hardwood. A rug or grip mat underneath stops the slide.
  • Typing a non-slip base or ties into the size box. Write add-ons in the order note, then confirm by message.
  • Waiting to fix a wrong size. Message quickly: dimensions can be corrected before the piece is finished, rarely after.

Order a toddler floor bed cushion by the platform, not the frame: 53.5 x 29.5 in and 4 in thick told the whole story; the 21 in frame height did not.

Styling a floor bed, and the tools before you order

Keep the corner quiet. In one of the photographs here, a rust corduroy star pouf with a sage star pillow and a cream cloud pillow is all the color a bright nursery needs; the walls and the canopy stay white.

Where does your child actually read? Put the mattress there, not where it looks tidiest.

Check heights with the seat height calculator. Then read kids' floor sofas: sizes by age, sleeping on a floor sofa and covers only for foam you already own. Nook ideas live in closet and under-loft-bed nooks and play tents and crash pads.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Can a child sleep on a floor cushion, and what size should I get?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The cushions are solid enough to sit or lie on and comfortable for sleeping, and many buyers use them as sleepover beds. Under a loft bed, 24 x 70 or 27 x 70 in is typical, and 70-75 in lengths are made routinely; a twin is about 38 x 75 in. A 6 or 8 in thickness sits higher off the floor. For a proper toddler bed, the kids' foam bed is the better fit.

  2. A common question

What size floor sofa or play bed suits a 2-year-old?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop suggested a 24 x 50 in floor sofa if you have the space. A larger 28 x 60 in set includes the backrest and armrests. The kids' corner sofa cushion is 39 x 39 in and can be made to a custom size, and the kids' foam play bed, mattress included, comes in 35 x 75, 45 x 75 and 55 x 79 in.

  3. A common question

Can you make a washable zippered cover for a mini crib mattress we use as a play mat?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. A removable, fully zippered box-style cover for a 37.75 x 23.75 x 3 in mini crib mattress is no problem, and a 61 x 61 x 10 in crash pad cover has been quoted with a long zipper for easy removal. Order through the cover listing, pick the size range, and write the exact size and fabric code in the personalization box. Say whether you want piping.

  4. A common question

Can you make a set for a toddler bed platform, with a seat, backs and bolsters?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Send the seat size, length by depth by thickness, and how many bolsters and back pillows you want; only the cushions' own measurements matter, not the frame height. For a 53.5 x 29.5 in platform, both a 5-piece set and a seat with one long back bolster fit; the 5-piece looks fuller and costs more. Everything ships filled unless you ask for covers only.

  5. A common question

The floor mattress arrived flat and folded. How long until it looks right?

    The workshop's answer

That is expected with vacuum-compressed, roll-packed foam. Unwrap every piece. Most fill out in 24-36 hours and reach the photographed shape in about 36-48 hours, with full firmness after 3-5 days, occasionally a week. Shaking the pieces by hand helps. If one is still flat after another 4-5 days, the shop sends replacement foam.

  6. A common question

I picked the wrong color right after checkout. Can it still change?

    The workshop's answer

Usually, yes, as long as the order hasn't shipped; the shop checks with production first. Message the exact color name or number from the chart. Dimensions can also be corrected if you are quick, as one mattress was updated to 75 x 38 x 8 in, but a finished custom piece usually can't be altered, so send final sizes early.

Questions buyers ask next

Does the height of the toddler bed frame change the cushion order?

No. Only the cushion's own dimensions matter: the length, width and thickness of what sits on the platform. A 21 in high frame and a floor-level frame take the same order if the platform is the same size.

How do I keep a floor mattress from sliding on hardwood?

Put a rug or grip mat underneath. If the piece has metal support bars, fit felt pads or fabric under them so they neither slide nor scratch the floor. A non-slip base can be requested in the order note.

Can a floor mattress have rounded corners or a curved end?

Yes, from a drawing or a template. Give the total width and depth, the straight length before each curve and the curve's depth, or trace the platform on wrapping paper and photograph it flat beside a tape measure.

Can two floor cushions make one bigger bed?

Yes. Two 63 x 27.5 in (160 x 70 cm) pallet-style floor couches placed side by side have made a double bed. Longer custom sizes are made for taller sleepers, too.

What if the floor mattress arrives the wrong size?

Send a photo with a tape measure along the full edge, and keep the wrong piece until you hear back. In past cases the workshop remade the piece or offered a partial refund instead.

Can the floor mattress cover go in the washing machine?

Yes. The cover unzips completely and machine washes at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle; air dry it rather than tumble drying. The foam itself is not washed.

Is a floor cushion safe for a baby to nap on?

Not for infants. US safe-sleep guidance says a baby should sleep on its back in a crib, bassinet or play yard holding only a fitted sheet, and a baby who falls asleep somewhere else should be moved to one. Play couch makers also set age minimums and label their products not for sleeping. Floor beds are for toddlers and older children.

How long does a compressed floor mattress take to recover its full shape?

Small pieces recover in a few hours and most cushions within one to three days, though full recovery can take up to a week; play couch makers quote one to two weeks for every wrinkle to relax. Unpack it within a few days of delivery, take the cover off, and knead or stretch the foam to help it along.
