Closet reading nooks and under-loft hideaways

Every child I ever knew found the smallest room in the house and moved in. Here are closets, loft-bed caves and canopy corners from past orders, and the sizes that made them work.

The quick answer

A closet reading nook cushion should fill the den's floor with room to curl up: about 40 x 40 in (102 x 102 cm) for a toddler corner, 38 x 38 in (97 x 97 cm) under an IKEA Kura loft, and 27 x 70 in (69 x 178 cm) where a friend sleeps over. For kids, pick untufted cushions with zippered covers.

Why children move into closets

Give a child a whole house and they will move into the closet. When I was small, the best seat at my grandmother's place was under the porch steps, behind the lattice, on a swing cushion nobody could find for a week.

A closet reading nook cushion is a floor cushion cut to a small room: a closet floor, the square under a loft bed, a corner under a canopy. The sizes are small, but the questions are not. Will someone sleep on it? Will a small back lean on it? Will it need a wash every other week? Kids and dogs are the real quality control, and a den is where they do their testing.

The Atlas covers the basics on reading nook cushions and kids' floor sofas, and the foam firmness finder helps when a bolster has to hold up a reader. Before you choose a size, tape the outline on the floor, neighbor, and sit in it. What does your den measure, wall to wall?

Nine small dens, from closets to canopy corners

  1. 01A past project

Two Kura loft beds, two 38 in squares

A parent wrote to the workshop about floor sofas for the lower level of two IKEA Kura loft beds. The workshop first assumed a mattress-sized 38 x 75 in (97 x 191 cm); the parent set it straight at 38 x 38 in (97 x 97 cm), a square play area. They ordered two sets, each a floor cushion, backrest and pillows, in two velvet colors.

The takeaway: Say whether the cushion fills the whole bed footprint or only a square den under it.

  2. 02A past project

Room for a sleepover under a 12-year-old's loft

A buyer in the US wanted the space under a 12-year-old's loft bed to be seating by day and a sleepover spot for friends, about 70 to 75 in (178 to 191 cm) long. The workshop said the cushions are very comfortable to sleep on, that most buyers get them for children, and suggested 24 x 70 in or 27 x 70 in (61 x 178 cm or 69 x 178 cm).

The takeaway: If a friend will sleep there, order the long cushion and let the den double as a guest bed.

  3. 03A past project

A prayer closet in rose pink velvet

A buyer got in touch to switch a small tufted floor cushion to rose pink velvet after ordering, and the workshop checked with the tailor before changing it. When it arrived, they called it so beautiful, and in the same breath wished they had ordered a bigger size.

The takeaway: For kneeling or sitting cross-legged, size up; a closet floor holds more cushion than it seems.

  4. 04A past project

A joinery nook measured after the carpenter left

A buyer messaged the workshop about a child's reading nook in new built-in joinery, planned at about 23.6 x 39.4 in (60 x 100 cm) with a mustard velvet in the mix. The joinery was going in the next day, so the workshop held the order. The final measurement came to 25.2 x 39.4 in (64 x 100 cm), and production went ahead.

The takeaway: Measure after the built-in is installed; the workshop can hold an order for the final size.

  5. 05A past project

A toddler floor bed turned reading loveseat

A buyer in the US wanted to turn a wooden toddler floor bed, a 53.5 x 29.5 in (136 x 75 cm) platform in a 21 in (53 cm) frame, into a reading loveseat. They weighed a five-piece set (seat, two backs, two side bolsters) against a seat with one back bolster, in linen with contrast piping. The workshop said both fit, the five-piece set costs about twice as much but looks fuller, and only the cushions' own sizes matter, not the frame height. They settled on 4 in (10 cm) of firm 32-density foam.

The takeaway: Send the cushions' own dimensions; every added piece makes the nook fuller and the order larger.

  6. 06A past project

A canopy corner for a toddler

A parent wrote to the workshop asking what size of quarter-tufted floor cushion would suit a toddler's reading corner under a canopy, and whether there were more colors than the listing showed. The workshop recommended 40 x 40 in (102 x 102 cm) and sent the extended color chart.

The takeaway: Start at 40 x 40 in under a canopy, and ask for the full color chart; the listing shows only part of it.

  7. 07A past project

Caterpillar yellow in a kids' window nook

A buyer in the US ordered two 27 x 46 x 4 in (69 x 117 x 10 cm) cushions in caterpillar yellow for a kids' window nook, and asked about three 27 x 12 in (69 x 30 cm) cylinder pillows and two tall back supports. Making the backs 12 in (30 cm) thick added a lot to the quote, so they dropped the extras and kept the two cushions.

The takeaway: Ask for each piece to be quoted on its own line, so you can trim extras and keep the cushions.

  8. 08A past project

Pink corduroy with a blue spare cover

A family wrote to the workshop thinking a 39.4 in (100 cm) square kids' corner cushion was too large, so the workshop offered about 32 in (80 cm). They chose the bigger one in pink corduroy after all, with a spare cover in blue. The daughter loved the pink, but the blue spare was left out of the box, so the workshop made it and shipped it separately.

The takeaway: Order a spare cover in a second color for kids' pieces, and check every item when the box arrives.

  9. 09A past project

    Tufted looks, washable life

A buyer in the US planning a reading nook for young children asked how to clean a linen tufted floor cushion. The workshop explained that tufted cushions can't go in the washing machine and should be wiped gently, and offered an untufted version with removable, machine-washable covers instead.

The takeaway: In a kids' den, choose untufted cushions with zippered covers so they can go in the wash.

Sizes that worked in real small dens

These are the sizes the workshop suggested or buyers ordered, smallest den first. For fabric, velvet is the easiest to spot-clean, and corduroy is soft on the eye, though its ribs can split under hard daily use. The kid-friendly fabric Pattern and kids' floor sofa sizes by age go further.

Small-den questions

  1. A common question

What size floor cushion fits a reading nook for a little one?

    The workshop's answer

For a toddler's reading corner the workshop has suggested about 40 x 40 in (102 x 102 cm); 32 x 32 in (81 x 81 cm) is cozy for a 4-year-old. For an adult about 5 ft 2 in to 5 ft 7 in (157 to 170 cm), choose the largest square, 48 x 48 in (122 x 122 cm). Mark the size on the floor first. For a built-in nook, send the exact size, and once you've chosen fabric and color the workshop sends a payment link.

  2. A common question

Can kids actually sleep on a floor cushion under a loft bed?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The cushions are solid enough to sit or lie on, and many buyers use them as sleepover beds for children. Under a loft bed, 24 x 70 or 27 x 70 in (61 or 69 x 178 cm) is typical, and 70 to 75 in lengths are made routinely; a twin is about 38 x 75 in (97 x 191 cm). A 6 or 8 in (15 or 20 cm) thickness sits higher off the floor. For a true toddler bed, there is a separate kids' foam bed.

  3. A common question

Which fabric holds up best in a kids' den?

    The workshop's answer

Soft fabric or velvet. The soft fabric is a wipe-clean microfiber, a little more durable than linen and thinner than velvet. Velvet stands up to daily use by children and is the easiest to spot-clean between washes, because marks lift off the pile. The striped cottons are harder to keep clean with kids around.

  4. A common question

Is there anything waterproof for a toddler who spills?

    The workshop's answer

The standard indoor fabric isn't waterproof, but it is durable and easy to clean, and zippered covers wash at 86°F (30°C) or lower. For real liquid protection there is a water-repellent outdoor fabric option, plus water-resistant premium charts and a faux leather chart that wipe clean. Any product can be made in any of the workshop's fabrics, and close-up swatch photos are available on request.

Questions buyers ask next

How do I measure a closet floor for a reading nook cushion?

Measure wall to wall at the back and again near the door, because small rooms are rarely square, and use the smaller number. If the closet has a door, make sure it still closes with the cushion in place. Then tape the outline on the floor and sit in it before ordering.

Can a tufted floor cushion go in the washing machine?

No. Tufted cushions are wiped gently rather than washed. For a child's den, an untufted cushion with a removable zippered cover is easier to live with, because the cover comes off and machine-washes at 86°F (30°C) on a delicate cycle.

How are quarter-round corner floor cushions measured?

By the two straight sides along the walls. A 48 x 48 in (122 x 122 cm) corner cushion, the usual maximum, has a curved front edge of about 75.4 in (191.5 cm). Measure along both walls from the corner and check that the curve fits the room.

Will a vacuum-packed floor cushion look flat when it arrives?

At first, yes. Cushions travel vacuum-compressed, and foam needs 48 to 72 hours, sometimes up to a week, to recover. Unpack right away, lay the pieces flat, keep everyone off them for two days, and wait three to four days before measuring.
