A turquoise velvet bolster pillow along a white daybed rail
One saturated roll against oatmeal and white paint. Harlan reads how a bolster cut to sit just inside the arm makes a slim daybed feel generous.
The quick answer
A bolster pillow makes a narrow daybed feel generous when it lies just inside the arm with no overhang past the seat front. Keep the seat and back neutral and put the one strong color in velvet, which shows two shades in daylight. On a long daybed, two bolsters of about 31 1/2 in (80 cm) are easier to move and wash than one.

Five pins, from the piped velvet end to the oatmeal back cushions that stay quiet on purpose.
The numbers match the pins on the plate.

The plate: one roll of turquoise and nothing competing
Velvet remembers the light it was shown in, and this photograph shows it twice.
On the crown of the bolster, where the pile faces the window, the color reads nearly aqua. On the shaded underside it drops to a deep petrol. One fabric, one dye, two colors, and nobody paid for the second one. That is the gift of velvet.
Everything around it is held back. The daybed arm is painted white. The seat and back cushions are an oatmeal weave, plain as bread. In a room that quiet, a single saturated object reads as a decision instead of an accident.
The ends are finished with self piping in the same turquoise, so the end cap looks like one piece with the body instead of a lid set on top. Contrast piping would draw a ring there. On a small daybed, a ring is one more thing for the eye to count.
How a slim bolster buys room on a narrow seat
Here is the small-space lesson, my friend, and it is mostly about what this bolster does not do.
It does not overhang. The roll lies just inside the painted arm and stops short of the seat front, so the front edge of the daybed stays one clean line. Let a pillow spill past that edge and a narrow seat looks crowded before anybody sits down.
It does not stand up. Lying along the arm, a bolster gives you an elbow rest without taking the depth a stack of square pillows would. On a daybed, every inch the pillows take from the back is an inch your knees lose at the front.
It does not multiply. One roll, one color. Three matching bolsters would turn a slim seat into a shelf of cylinders.

Two mattresses already bought, a bolster still to come
One buyer wrote in who already owned two daybed mattresses, each about 75 x 35 1/2 in (190 x 90 cm) and 5 to 5 1/2 in (13 to 14 cm) deep. They wanted covers for them and a bolster to finish the look.
The shop first proposed two bolsters of about 10 x 10 x 35 1/2 in (25 x 25 x 90 cm). The buyer then narrowed it to one long roll at 75 in (190 cm) or two shorter ones at about 31 1/2 in (80 cm), and the shop confirmed the shorter length could be made.
I'd have argued for the pair. Two shorter rolls are easier to lift, easier to wash, and easier to rearrange when company comes. A single long roll looks grand in a photograph and is a nuisance on laundry day. The daybed mattress cover measurements Pattern covers the rest of that job.
Buyer questions: straps, zippers and a color that surprised
- A common question
Can my bolster come with a strap to hold it on the mattress, and can the ends be perfectly flat?
The workshop's answerBolsters are made without straps as standard, so a strap has to be requested on the order. The shop has made a replacement bolster with a strap, which took about 1 to 2 weeks because the part had to be sourced. Perfectly flat ends are close to impossible because of the filling inside.
- A common question
Can I choose which edge the zipper goes on?
The workshop's answerYes. Tell the shop where you want it: along the long back edge, down a long side so the cushion can be flipped, at the back of a trapezoid chair seat, or at the narrow end and around the corner so a tapered cover slides on from its wider end.
- A common question
The color looks different in person than it did on my screen. Can I swap the cover?
The workshop's answerSending a cover back usually costs more than it is worth, so the shop offered a new slipcover in another color at cost, well below the normal price for that size, with most of the charge being shipping.

Questions buyers ask next
What size bolster suits a daybed?
Measure the inside length between the arms, then choose one roll or two. One buyer with 75 in (190 cm) mattresses weighed a single 75 in bolster against two of about 31 1/2 in (80 cm). Either way, the bolster should lie inside the arm without overhanging the seat front.
Why does velvet look like two colors in the same photo?
Velvet has a pile, and light catches the fibers differently depending on their direction. Surfaces facing a window read lighter and brighter, shaded ones deeper. Turquoise velvet can look nearly aqua on top and petrol underneath in the same daylight.
Should a daybed bolster match the seat cushion?
It doesn't have to. A neutral seat and back with one saturated bolster reads as a deliberate accent, and on a small daybed one strong color in velvet gives the most effect for the least bulk. Matching everything is calmer, but flatter.
Can I order a bolster for daybed mattresses I already own?
Yes. One buyer already had two daybed mattresses about 5 to 5 1/2 in (13 to 14 cm) deep and ordered covers and bolsters to go with them, giving the mattress sizes so the rolls would suit the frame.
