The Cutting Table · a checklist answer

Can you make a bolster or neck roll for my daybed?

Also asked as:Add a neck roll in the same fabric?Matching bolster for my daybed?

A neck roll is the smallest piece on a daybed, and the first one folks miss when it isn't there.

The quick answer

Yes, daybed bolsters and neck rolls are made to any length and diameter, in the same fabric as the mattress cover, with filling included. One roll for a 31 1/2 x 79 in (80 x 200 cm) mattress was 31 1/2 in (80 cm) long and 8 5/8 in (22 cm) across. Backrest and bolster pillows can also be ordered alone.

What to have in hand before you ask

  • Your mattress size, such as 79 x 31 1/2 in (200 x 80 cm).
  • The length of each roll. One neck roll matched the mattress width: 31 1/2 in (80 cm).
  • The diameter. That roll was 8 5/8 in (22 cm) across.
  • How many pieces: a neck roll, two armrest bolsters, backrests.
  • Your mattress cover fabric, so the roll is cut from the same cloth.
  • Any mattresses you already own that need covers too.

Filled, sewn shut, and why

Daybed armrests and backrests come filled with their own filling. The tufted ones are closed for good, so they have no zippers. If you want a cover you can take off, ask for a plain bolster; its cover can be made with a zipper.

A seam is a promise, my friend. The tufted versus plain Pattern lays out the trade, the bolster diameter Pattern helps you pick a size, and the bolster pillows pages show finished rolls on real daybeds.

A real project

Two mattresses on hand, two bolsters cut down

One buyer wrote in who already owned two mattresses, each 75 x 35 1/2 in (190 x 90 cm) and about 5 to 5 1/2 in (13 to 14 cm) deep. They wanted covers for those, and a pair of bolsters at 10 x 10 x 35 1/2 in (25 x 25 x 90 cm).

The workshop quoted covers and bolsters together and noted the bolsters could be shortened to 31 1/2 in (80 cm) each. That's made-to-measure: the number bends to the bed.

Only the pillows, ordered on their own

You don't have to buy a whole set. Backrest and bolster pillows can be ordered alone; send each piece's length, diameter and fabric, and ask the workshop for the making and delivery time before you order. For the cover, the daybed mattress cover Pattern shows the three numbers to take, and the daybed cushions pages show a full set.

What does your daybed want more, a roll for the neck or a pair of arms?

Tufted daybed armrests and backrests arrive filled and have no zippers; if you want a cover that comes off, order a plain bolster.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Can you make a neck roll that matches my daybed cover?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Neck rolls are made to any length and diameter in the same fabric, with filling included. One was 31 1/2 in (80 cm) long and 8 5/8 in (22 cm) across to match a 31 1/2 x 79 in (80 x 200 cm) mattress cover.

  2. A common question

Can I buy only the backrest and bolster pillows, or covers for mattresses I already own?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Backrest and bolster pillows can be ordered alone. Covers for existing mattresses, such as two at 75 x 35 1/2 in (190 x 90 cm), can be quoted together with bolsters, and bolsters can be shortened to 31 1/2 in (80 cm).

  3. A common question

Do the daybed armrest bolsters come filled, and do they have zippers?

    The workshop's answer

Armrests and backrests come filled with their own filling. Because they are tufted, they have no zippers.

  4. A common question

Can I add matching bolsters later to a cushion I bought before?

    The workshop's answer

Usually, yes: matching bolsters, armrests or neck pillows have been made later in a buyer's original fabric while it was still in stock. Send the sizes, the quantity and the fabric code from your first order for a custom link.

Questions buyers ask next

Can a daybed bolster have contrast piping?

Yes. Bolsters can have same-fabric piping, contrast piping in a second fabric, or be made fully in a contrast or stripe fabric, in any length and diameter, ordered through a private custom link.

Can one long bolster work as the backrest of a daybed or bench?

Yes. Long cylinder backrests with rounded ends are made to the full length in matching fabric. Standard diameter is 8 in (20 cm); for a 31 1/2 in (80 cm) seating depth, plan about 39 in (100 cm) of total depth so the bolster fits.

Will a daybed bolster match my window seat or bench cushion?

It can. Bolsters are made in the same fabric and piping as your bench or window seat cushion, to any diameter and length. Send the cushion size, each bolster's diameter and length, the quantity and the fabric.
