A silver-gray L-shaped bench cushion in a Scandinavian kitchen, tested against daily life
Gray seat, warm pillows, white boxes underneath. The palette doubles as a maintenance plan, and the measurements are a short arithmetic lesson.

The quick answer
An L-shaped bench cushion for a family kitchen works best in a mid-tone performance weave, such as silver gray, that hides crumbs and fur and unzips to wash at 86°F (30°C). It's made as two pieces meeting at the corner: one runs into the corner, and the other is cut shorter by the first one's seat depth.
Six colors, ranked by what they forgive
Named by eye from the photograph, seat first. The strip above is measured from it.
- Silver gray (seat)#d0cfccThe mid-tone that does the work. Crumbs, dust and gray fur disappear into the pebble weave.
- Cabinet white#eaeae9Storage fronts. A slim cushion leaves most of the white showing.
- Oatmeal linen (window pillow)#afa497Lightest pillow, farthest from the plates.
- Rust velvet (pillow)#9a4a2cThe warm answer to the gray. Indoor-only; spot-clean, or unzip and wash.
- Cognac velvet (corner pillow)#684d37Darkest tone, in the corner where elbows and hands land.
- Oak and jute#927e6dTable and rug. Rust threads in the rug repeat the pillows at floor level.
A gray seat that takes the hits
Start with proportion. The cushion is slim, about a quarter of the height of the white storage box beneath it, so the fronts still read as clean joinery rather than a sofa. A self-piped welt runs the whole front edge and keeps a long run looking straight.
Now the color math. Silver gray sits halfway between the white cabinetry and the oak table, so it argues with neither. In a family kitchen it's also the practical call: the seat takes the spills, the crumbs and the dog, so the seat gets the performance weave. The warmth is all in the pillows, stepping from oatmeal by the window to rust and cognac velvet in the corner, where the eye lands. They sit above the crumb line.
If a dog sleeps here, partner, ask for the pet-friendly weave. Its supplier reports about 88,000 Martindale at about 11 oz/yd² (370 g/m²), tightly woven with no loops to catch claws. No fabric fully resists claws, but no loops means less to snag. Who uses your bench hardest: the kids, the dog or the coffee?

Five pins, from the piped front edge to the rug.

- Piped front edge
A gray welt along the front edge keeps the long run straight and sharp.
- Rust velvet pillow
Rust and cognac velvets are the warm answer to a cool gray seat.
- Oatmeal linen pillow
Pale linen pillows step the color down from the rust to the gray.
- Oak table setting
Oak and stoneware keep the palette natural next to all the white.
- Striped jute rug

Two legs, two depths, one corner
A buyer in the US sent an L-shaped bench measured both ways: 90 x 55 in (229 x 140 cm) outside and 72.75 x 39 in (185 x 99 cm) inside. The workshop confirmed it would be made as two cushions meeting at the corner, and that 3 or 4 in (7.5 or 10 cm) of thickness would not change the price.
Read those four numbers as a drawing. Outside minus inside gives each seat depth: 90 − 72.75 = 17.25 in (44 cm) on one leg, 55 − 39 = 16 in (41 cm) on the other. So the long cushion runs into the corner at 90 x 16 in, and the short one is 39 x 17.25 in. Two pieces let each leg keep its own depth, and they fit and ship better than one big L. The L-shaped cushions hub and the corner joint Pattern show the layouts.
- Sizes
- Outside 90 x 55 in (229 x 140 cm); inside 72.75 x 39 in (185 x 99 cm); 3 in thick
The lesson: An L-shaped seat is best made as two pieces that butt together at the corner.
Velvet sheen, a 45° corner and backrest heights
- A common question
Is your deep navy velvet a performance poly or cotton? Matte or shiny? Short pile or long?
The workshop's answerIt's a polyester-blend velvet with more sheen than a matte finish, and a short, tight pile that feels smooth and soft rather than shaggy.
- A common question
My banquette cushions meet at a 45-degree angle in the corner. Can I just write that in the notes?
The workshop's answerNo. Once they're cut on the diagonal, the cushions are trapezoids, which is a different listing and a slightly higher price. Order through the trapezoid listing, pick the size range by each cushion's longest and deepest measurements, and upload a drawing with every edge measured, the 45-degree cut included.
- A common question
How tall is the backrest, and can it be a different shape?
The workshop's answerThe standard backrest is 16 in (40 cm) high and 4 in (10 cm) thick, made the same length as the seat. It can have a curved or rounded top, be split into two pieces, or be made to your own size, such as 36 in wide, 8 in deep and 12 in high, with the same tufting as the seat.
An L-shaped bench cushion is two pieces: one runs into the corner, and the other is cut shorter by the first one's seat depth, so a 55 in leg with a 16 in seat takes a 39 in cushion.

Questions buyers ask next
Which fabric suits a kitchen banquette used by kids every day?
For kids, rentals and heavy daily use the workshop recommends its soft performance weave or velvet: durable, wipeable and machine washable. A mid-tone such as silver gray hides crumbs between washes. The kid-friendly fabric Pattern compares the options.
How is the pet-friendly cushion fabric different from the others?
It's 100% polyester, about 11 oz/yd² (370 g/m²), tightly woven with no loops, and its supplier reports about 88,000 Martindale. It wipes clean and washes at 86°F (30°C). No fabric fully resists claws, but a flat, tight weave gives them less to catch.
Does choosing 3 in or 4 in change the price of an L-shaped cushion?
In this case it didn't: 3 in and 4 in (7.5 and 10 cm) were quoted the same. Most replies say the standard 2 to 5 in options cost the same, while thicker custom builds cost more.
