A Reading by MaggieDining Chair Cushions & Pads
Round striped chair cushions with ties, five in a row at a rooftop bar
Five thin round pads, five gingham bows, one stripe. Maggie writes a letter about the props on a sunny bar counter and how to copy the rhythm at a kitchen island.
SaveThe quick answer
Round chair cushions with ties suit bar and counter stools when each pad is cut to the round seat, kept thin so the counter height still works, and tied at the stool back. Use one stripe on every stool so the row reads as rhythm, then let the props repeat its colors: terracotta pots, olive leaves, a cool gray counter.

To anyone facing a row of bare bar stools,
A letter about a row of stools
Five stools in a line are either a rhythm or a queue. The difference, I've found, is one stripe used five times.
In this photo the stools are metal and wood, lined up along a concrete counter on a rooftop, with an old city of domes and roofs catching the late sun behind them. Each seat wears a round box pad in a red, green and navy stripe on white, finished with self piping and tied to the stool back with a gingham ribbon bow.
The pads are thin. That's the first thing I checked, and the thing people forget. A bar counter is built for a stool of a certain height. Add a fat cushion and your elbows arrive at the counter like a child's at the grown-ups' table. Keep round chair cushions with ties slim, and the height stays right.
Pinned by Maggie: the round striped stool cushions
Five pins, from the round stool pad and its gingham bow to the olive tree that repeats the stripe.

A checked ribbon bow at the stool back adds a playful café detail and holds the pad in place.
- Repeating stools
The same stripe on every stool turns a row of seats into a rhythm.
- Concrete counter
Cool gray concrete makes the red and green stripes look brighter.
- Olive tree and pots
Terracotta and olive green soften the hard bar and repeat the stripe colors.

Gingham ties, terracotta pots and olive leaves: the props
The gingham bows. Checked ribbon at each stool back holds the pad in place and adds a café wink without hiding the cushion edge. I once tied a whole set of kitchen pads with plain white tape, and they looked discharged from a hospital. Gingham has a sense of humor.
The concrete counter. Cool gray makes red and green look brighter. A white quartz or gray stone island does you the same favor.
The olive tree and herbs in terracotta. Olive leaves repeat the green stripe; terracotta repeats the red, softened. Together they take the hard edge off a bar that is otherwise all metal and concrete.
The skyline. You can't order one. But notice the warm light: this stripe suits late-afternoon sun, when reds glow and navy holds steady.
To copy it at a kitchen island, dear, order round box pads with ties, use one stripe for the whole row, and set a potted herb or two on the counter in a color the stripe already has. The bistro chair and bar stool cushions sketches and the outdoor acrylic library will do the rest. How many stools are in your row?
A loveseat that grew into a whole patio before the party
A buyer in the US started with one cushion, for an oval wicker loveseat with rounded corners. Then she added a chair cushion. Then the whole outdoor couch.
The final order was a green-and-white outdoor stripe with piping: a 17 x 20 in (43 x 51 cm) chair cushion, a 37 x 19 in (94 x 48 cm) loveseat cushion, three 17 in (43 cm) pillows, and couch pieces at 20 x 20 in (51 x 51 cm) and 22 x 20 in (56 x 51 cm), three of each. The shop quoted the whole covered patio as one set, below the list total, and it arrived before her party. She wrote that she cried because they looked so beautiful.
Two lessons. Quote an outdoor room as one set, so every piece shares the same fabric and the same cut. And write the event date on the order where nobody can miss it. More sets like this live in patio and porch cushions and the dining chair cushions atlas, and tie placement for chairs settles where the bows go.
Buyer questions: ladder-backs, a lone ottoman and cold feet
- A common question
Can you make tie-on cushions for vintage ladder-back dining chairs?
The workshop's answerYes. Send a photo of the chair and a simple diagram with the dimensions, including the left and right side edges, plus how many you need. Ties go at the back to hold the cushions on, and the covers are removable and washable. One set was four 4 in (10 cm) pads with sides of about 11 in and front and back widths of 13 and 14 in.
- A common question
Is there a way to buy just the ottoman to match my sofa?
The workshop's answerYes. Pick the ottoman-only option on the sofa listing, or use the separate ottoman listing, and choose the same color as your sofa.
- A common question
Can I cancel my custom order if I don't need it right now?
The workshop's answerYes. The order can be cancelled and refunded to the original payment method. The shop can also hold the payment until you're ready, and if you only need to change something, the order can be updated without cancelling.

Five bar stools are a rhythm or a queue: put one stripe on every round cushion, keep each pad thin, and the row reads as rhythm.

Questions buyers ask next
How thick should a bar stool cushion be?
Thin. A bar or counter stool is already set to the counter height, so a thick pad lifts your elbows too high. Keep a round stool pad slim, and check the gap between the seat and the underside of the counter before you order.
Do round cushions need ties on a backless stool?
Ties need something to wrap around, such as a back post or spindle. On a backless stool, ask about a non-slip base instead, which grips the seat without ties and keeps the round pad centered.
Can I order cushions for a whole outdoor seating area at once?
Yes. One buyer ordered a chair cushion, a loveseat cushion, three pillows and six couch pieces in one green-and-white stripe, quoted together as a set. Put your event date on the order so the timing is clear from the start.
Should every stool in a row have the same cushion?
For a calm counter, yes: one stripe on every stool turns repetition into rhythm. If you want variety, change the tie color rather than the cushion fabric, so the row still reads as one set.
