Coral round stool pads for a crowded bar, piped and cut to the seat

A row of round stools, one color, festoon lights coming on. Seating a crowd well is mostly a matter of making every seat look as if it belongs.

Round coral pads cut to the stool tops add color and comfort to a concrete rooftop bar under festoon lights.

The quick answer

For bar stools that seat a crowd, cut each cushion to the round seat, give it a piped box edge and repeat one color down the whole row. These coral outdoor acrylic pads on wooden rooftop stools read as upholstery rather than loose pads, and a fine dot weave keeps small drink splashes from showing.

One color down the whole bar

Right, then. A bar full of guests is a test of consistency, and this rooftop passes it.

Each wooden stool wears a round coral pad cut to its seat, with a self-piped box edge. Cut to the round, a piped cushion looks like upholstery. A square pad on a round stool looks like somebody forgot.

Coral is the warm answer to gray concrete and a sky going blue. The festoon bulbs make it glow as the light fades. The fabric is an outdoor acrylic with a fine dot in the weave, so a splash of lime cocktail does not announce itself.

The props are hospitality in shorthand: two drinks with paper straws, a bowl of green olives, a potted olive tree, clipped conifers in terracotta. Nothing on the counter is coral. The chair pads carry the color alone, which is exactly why the row looks planned.

Pinned by Maggie: five marks along the rooftop bar

Five pins run from the coral pad at the front, down the row of stools, past the cocktails and up to the festoon lights.

  1. coral round stool pad

Cut to the round seat, a piped pad looks like upholstery, not a loose cushion.

  2. second stool cushion

Repeating one color down the bar keeps a row of stools tidy.

  3. lime cocktails

A fine dot weave in coral is forgiving of drink splashes.

  4. festoon lights

Warm bulbs make the coral glow as the sky turns blue.

  5. concrete bar front

Gray concrete is the cool backdrop that coral needs.

My hosting checklist for a row of stools

  • Measure every stool, not just one. Write each seat diameter down before you order.
  • One color, one fabric, one piping. Repetition is what makes a row look deliberate.
  • Pipe the edge. A welt holds the round outline after the whole party has sat on it.
  • Near drinks, choose a weave with a little texture; a fine dot hides what a pale plain cloth shows.
  • Order the dining chair pads in the same fabric and say so on the order, so the pieces are kept together.
  • Keep a zippered cover on every pad, dear. After a late night it comes off for cleaning in a minute.
A real project

A play mat for the guests' children

Not every guest at a party is tall enough for a bar stool. A parent in the US wrote to the workshop about a mini crib mattress, 37.75 x 23.75 x 3 in (96 x 60 x 7.5 cm), that had become a floor play mat.

They wanted a fully zippered, washable box-style cover for it. The workshop confirmed it could be done, pointed them to the cover listing and asked for the exact size and fabric code in the personalization note.

I like this story because it is thrifty and sensible. Any foam you already own can get a tailored zippered cover, and a spare play mat is a gift to every visiting family. The Pattern on covers for existing foam shows what to measure, and our bar stool cushion sketches show more rows like this one.

Buyer questions: ties, thickness and an oval loveseat

  1. A common question

Can you make chair cushions with ties in the same fabric as the bench cushion I'm ordering?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Matching chair cushions with ties can be made in exactly the same fabric so everything coordinates. Send the chair sizes and mention them when you order so the pieces are kept together.

  2. A common question

I don't like thin, flat chair pads. Can you make four 2-inch cushions with piping in a printed fabric?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The workshop first checked the chair pattern with its craftsmen, then quoted a set of four 2 in (5 cm) piped cushions in a printed chenille through a custom payment link.

  3. A common question

My wicker loveseat has an oval seat. Can the cushion have rounded corners, and can you add matching pillows?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Send a simple drawing with every measurement and a photo of the seat, and the craftsmen check the shape before confirming. Matching square pillows, such as 16 x 16 in (40 x 40 cm), with the same piping can go on the same quote.

Cut a bar stool cushion to the round seat and pipe its edge; a square pad on a round stool always looks borrowed.

Questions buyers ask next

Should a round stool cushion be cut to the seat or left a little larger?

Cut it to the seat. A pad that follows the round edge reads as upholstery, while one that overhangs looks loose and gets knocked as guests slide on and off. Measure the diameter of each stool before ordering.

Why does coral work on a gray concrete rooftop bar?

Gray concrete and a blue evening sky are both cool, so a warm coral balances them. Under festoon bulbs the color glows at dusk, and repeated on every stool it becomes the bar's one clear accent.

Is a textured outdoor acrylic better than a plain one near drinks?

It looks better for longer. A fine dot or slub in the weave breaks up small splashes and water marks that a flat, pale cloth shows at once. That is a visual advantage only, so still blot spills quickly.
