Sage seat and back cushions on a teak lounge chair, read from ten feet and from ten inches

Maggie's notebook from a stone terrace: what the eye takes in from the doorway, what it only finds up close, and where to spend your decisions.

The quick answer

A chair cushion with ties reads well from ten feet when it keeps to one solid color and a clear shape, and well up close when the piping runs straight and the ties sit low. Here sage seat and back cushions, the back taller than the teak frame, turn a plain chair into a lounge seat.

From the terrace door, then from the seat

From ten feet, a cushion is a shape and a color. Nothing else survives the distance.

Stand at the terrace door and this is what you get: a low teak lounge chair, a sage block for the seat, a taller sage block for the back, and a great deal of green around it. Ferns and ivy spill from terracotta pots, planters hang from the iron railing, and the stone wall behind is rough and gray. The sage reads as part of the planting. First decision, done right: one solid color, taken from the plants rather than the furniture.

Second decision, also visible from the door: the back cushion rises above the teak frame. That changes the chair's whole outline. A plain chair becomes a lounge seat you would sit in for a whole pot of coffee.

Now walk closer. At ten inches you see the self piping along the seat's box edge; it keeps a solid crisp without adding a second color that would break up the view from the door. A straight welt is a kind of honesty, and a wandering one is the first thing a guest notices up close. You see the tie at the back, small and low, holding the back cushion to the frame. And you see the weathered table with its single espresso cup, which tells you who sits here, and when.

My notebook rule, dear: spend the color decision on the ten-foot view and the tailoring decisions on the ten-inch one. Which would you rather fix on your own patio?

Tie notes are in tie placement for chairs and swings. More seats live under dining chair cushions and patio and porch cushions, and the fabric family is outdoor acrylic.

Five pins, from the tall back cushion to the espresso cup that tells you when the chair gets used.

  1. Tall back cushion

Taller than the frame, it turns a plain teak chair into a lounge seat.

  2. Plump seat

A thick seat with self piping keeps the solid color crisp.

  3. Back tie

A discreet tie anchors the back cushion to the frame.

  4. Ferns and ivy

Plants supply the pattern so the fabric can stay solid.

  5. Espresso cup

A single cup hints at slow mornings in this chair.

Ten-inch checklist

  • Piping runs straight along every edge, with no wander at the corners.
  • Ties sit low and match the fabric, so they vanish from the doorway.
  • The back cushion clears the top of the frame if you want a lounge look.
  • Measurements were typed out, not read off a tape-measure photo.
  • Ties were asked for when the order went in.

Buyer questions: tape photos, ties and small seats

  1. A common question

Can I just send photos of my tape measure on the chair instead of writing the numbers down?

    The workshop's answer

Photos help show the shape, but reading exact numbers off a tape in a photo invites errors, so the workshop asks you to type them: front width, back width, depth and thickness. It then drew templates with your figures beside each edge for you to check before the quote.

  2. A common question

Do custom chair cushions come with ties as standard?

    The workshop's answer

No. Ties are added only when you ask for them at the time of ordering. One buyer assumed they were standard and received chair cushions without them; the workshop offered to pay half of a local tailor's cost to add them.

  3. A common question

Do you make small seat cushions, around 14 x 14 in?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Very small sizes don't have their own prices in the system, so pick the listed size closest to yours and write the exact size, here 14 x 14 in (35 x 35 cm), and the fabric in the personalization box. Shipping cost is also why small cushions can't be priced much lower.

A real project

Two small cushions and an incomplete address

A buyer wrote to the workshop needing two very small seat cushions, 10 x 13 in (25 x 33 cm) and 2 in (5 cm) thick, in beige from the color chart. Tiny cushions, big lesson.

The courier could not deliver, because the address was incomplete. The parcel came back to the workshop and went out a second time, with the buyer covering the extra shipping.

So here is my checklist at the door: full street address, apartment number or door code, and a phone number the driver can actually call.

2 cushions, 10 x 13 x 2 in (25 x 33 x 5 cm)

The lesson: Give a full address with the door code and a phone number, or a small parcel can travel twice.

From ten feet a chair cushion is only a shape and a color, so take the color from the plants and save the fussing for piping and ties up close.

Questions buyers ask next

Should outdoor chair cushions be patterned or solid?

In a garden full of plants, a solid often works better: ferns and ivy supply the pattern, and the cushion reads as part of the planting. Take the shade from the leaves around the chair.

How tall should a back cushion be on a lounge chair?

For a lounge look, taller than the chair frame, as here, so your shoulders have something to rest against. Standard backrests are 16 in (40 cm) tall, and heights from about 8 in upward can be made.

What should self piping look like up close?

Straight and even along the box edge, with no ripple at the corners. On a solid it keeps the edge crisp without adding a second color, so the cushion looks tailored from near and far.

What address details help a cushion delivery?

The full street address, the apartment number or door code, and a phone number the driver can call. One small parcel went back to the workshop because the address was incomplete and had to be sent twice.
