A Reading by MaggieBench Cushions
An olive striped mudroom bench cushion and the case for a box edge
It begins with four cushions in three color pairings and a checkout that said one. Then Maggie reads the edge, the corners and the pine.
SaveThe quick answer
A custom bench cushion for a mudroom works best with a box edge: straight side walls hold a crisp shape on a plain plank and give a stripe room to run. Here an olive and cream stripe with self piping sits on knotty pine. Hook-and-loop strips, one half sewn under the cushion and one for the bench, keep it in place.
Buyer questions: odd ledges, wall-mounted backs and velcro
- A common question
My window ledge has an odd shape with one corner cut away. Can you make a cushion to fit?
The workshop's answerYes, custom shapes are made to order. Send a picture, or a paper drawing of the shape with every size written on it, and the workshop quotes from that.
- A common question
I'd like to fix a cushion to the wall above my bench as a backrest. How is that done?
The workshop's answerWith hook-and-loop fastener. The shop sews one side onto the back of the cushion, and you fix the matching side to the wall with strong adhesive, or with screws for a firmer hold. The cushion presses on and peels off for cleaning.
- A common question
Can you sew velcro under the seat cushion so it stays on the bench?
The workshop's answerYes. The strips come in two halves: one is sewn under the cushion and the other is sent to you to fix to the bench. Velcro is an extra-cost option, so some buyers fit their own.
Now, the reading
The conversation: four cushions, one checkout
Four matching cushions in three different color pairings: that was the plan a buyer sent the workshop, and I liked it on sight. All four were 12 x 33 in (30.5 x 84 cm), all velvet:
- two in olive green 123 with light lilac 116 piping
- one in dusty mauve 117 with mustard 111 piping
- one in mustard 111 with pale pink 115 piping
The workshop's reply, more or less: lovely pairings, but the checkout shows a quantity of one. Please add three more before production, so the order matches the four pieces.
That was the whole problem, and it is a common one. Mixing colors across identical cushions works beautifully; the order just has to count the pieces. I once shopped for a dinner party of eight with a list that said four, so no judgment here.
Pinned by Maggie
Five pins, from the self-piped box corner to the jute runner that echoes the stripe on the floor.

- Self-piped box corner
Olive and cream piping blends into the stripe, so the corner stays neat without drawing a hard line.
- Jackets on hooks
An olive coat repeats the cushion color and makes the drop zone feel coordinated.
- Fern in terracotta
A live plant keeps a wood-heavy mudroom from feeling like a cabin.
- Wicker basket
Baskets under the counter hide hats and gloves so the seat stays free to sit on.
- Striped jute runner
A second, narrower stripe on the floor echoes the cushion without matching it.

Reading the edge: a box cushion on a pine plank
Look at the corner nearest the camera. That is a box edge, a straight side wall between top and bottom, and the cushion sits deep and full on a plain knotty pine plank, several times thicker than the board beneath it. On a hard-working built-in, that depth is what turns a shelf into a seat.
The piping is self piping, olive and cream cut from the same stripe. It keeps the box corner neat without drawing a hard line around a busy pattern. A straight welt is a kind of honesty, and on a stripe it has nowhere to hide.
Olive against honey pine is a near-neighbor pairing, which keeps a lively stripe calm in cool morning light. The props repeat it without copying it. Olive and navy jackets hang on iron hooks. A fern in terracotta makes the room read garden shed rather than cabin. A wicker basket under the counter swallows hats and gloves, so the seat stays free. Brown boots tuck under the bench, and a narrower striped jute runner echoes the cushion on the floor.
The practical part: a mid-tone stripe forgives wet coats and boot scuffs that plain cream would show by Tuesday. What lands on your bench first each evening? More entry seats are under mudroom and entryway bench cushions and bench cushions, the fabric under striped cotton and ticking, and the edges in the box edge versus knife edge Pattern.
Box, knife, rounded or angled: which edge for a mudroom
| Edge or corner | What it does | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Box edge | Straight side walls, square corners, crisp outline | The bench is a plain plank and the seat works hard |
| Knife edge | Two panels seamed at the rim, thinner at the sides | You want a light pad rather than a full seat |
| Rounded corners | Softens the front corners where coats and knees pass | The bench sits in a tight walkway |
| Angled corners | Cut to a wall, post or odd ledge from your drawing | The bench is not a true rectangle |
On the cutting table
| Piece | Mudroom bench seat cushion |
|---|---|
| Fabric | Olive green and cream striped cotton |
| Edge | Box edge, deep on a plain pine plank |
| Piping | Self piping cut from the stripe |
| Staying put | Hook-and-loop, one half sewn under (extra cost) |

| Odd shapes | Photo or paper drawing with every size |
| Best for | Entryways that take wet coats and boots |

Questions buyers ask next
Box edge or knife edge for a mudroom bench?
A box edge suits a mudroom. Straight side walls hold a crisp shape on a plain plank and give a stripe somewhere to run. A knife edge is thinner at the sides and softer-looking, better for a light pad than a full seat.
What bench cushion color hides mud and wet coats?
A mid-tone stripe hides boot scuffs and damp sleeves far better than plain cream. Olive on honey pine is a close pairing, so even a lively stripe stays calm in a wood-heavy room.
Can several identical cushions come in different colors?
Yes. One buyer ordered four 12 x 33 in (30.5 x 84 cm) velvet cushions in three color and piping pairings. Set the order quantity to the number of pieces, so production is not held up.
