A Reading by MaggieDining Chair Cushions & Pads
A mustard chair cushion for an oak dining chair, built for the long dinner
Oak chair, oak table, oak console, and one mustard seat. Maggie on what keeps you in a dining chair past dessert, starting with a conversation.
SaveThe quick answer
A chair cushion with ties should follow the seat's real shape, with ties placed at the back posts. Many dining seats are trapezoids, such as 15 1/2 in (39 cm) at the back and 18 1/2 in (47 cm) at the front, so send a drawing that shows the curves, cut-outs and tie positions, not just two numbers.
Buyer questions
- A common question
Is the ottoman attached to the corner floor sofa, and does it come with it?
The workshop's answerThe corner sofa listing includes the ottoman, and a lower-priced listing leaves it out. The ottoman is a separate piece, not attached at all, so it can go on either side, and it may arrive in its own package.
- A common question
Can you add ties so the cushions stay put on the chairs?
The workshop's answerYes, wherever you specify: at the bottom back corners of dining bench cushions, for example, or ribbons on two corners of a chair pad. Mark them on your drawing and check the photo sent before shipping, because in one order the ties were forgotten.
- A common question
Can you copy the seat and back cushions I already have on my dining chairs?
The workshop's answerYes. Send photos with the dimensions, and the shop quotes the seat and back cushion per chair; ask it to show shipping on the quote.
Now, the reading
A conversation about five cushions and a lot of ties
The buyer, in the US: Five matching tufted cushions, no piping, in a solid dark green-gray. One for a bench, 15 3/4 x 59 7/8 in (40 x 152 cm). Four for dining chairs.
The shop: What shape are the chair seats?
The buyer: 15 1/2 in (39 cm) at the back, 18 1/2 in (47 cm) at the front, sides 17 1/4 in (44 cm) and slightly curved. Standard ties on the chairs, with cut-outs at the back. On the bench, two 20 in (51 cm) ties at each corner.
The shop: Please send a detailed drawing of the sizes before we quote.
Quite right. Those chair seats are trapezoids with bowed sides, and three numbers cannot tell a cutter which way a curve bends or where a post interrupts the back edge. A drawing can. Start with dining chair pad measurements and the shapes in tapered dining chair pads.
Why this chair keeps you past dessert
A dinner that runs long is the real test of a dining chair cushion. Bare wood is fine for a quick breakfast. By the second cup of coffee, everybody is shifting.
This room is oak on oak on oak: chair, table, TV console. One saturated mustard seat gives the eye somewhere to land. The cushion sits inside the seat rails with a slim profile, so it adds comfort without lifting you awkwardly above the table. The angled oak backrest is open, which leaves the whole mustard seat visible from across the room.
The cream welt is the clever bit. It matches the wool carpet, so the edge reads soft rather than graphic. A dark welt would have drawn a diagram of the seat. A straight welt is a kind of honesty, and a cream one is honesty with good manners.
The reading glasses and the speckled ceramic mug on the table are the tell: this chair gets used for long reading and working hours, not just for the photo. The mug is neutral stoneware, so the table does not argue with the seat.
The fabric is a linen-look weave in mustard gold. How long do you actually sit at your table on a Sunday? If the answer is hours, plan the ties and the shape as carefully as the color: see tie placement for chairs and swings, try the shape in the chair cushion builder, and browse the dining chair cushion atlas and kitchen nook cushions.
Pinned by Maggie
Five pins, from the cream piped front edge to the oak console that explains the mustard.

- Cream piped front
The welt matches the carpet, so the edge reads soft rather than graphic.
- Angled oak backrest
The chair's open back leaves the mustard seat fully visible from the room.
- Reading glasses
A small everyday object shows the chair is used daily, not just staged.
- Ceramic mug
A neutral stoneware mug keeps the table from competing with the seat color.
- Oak TV console
More of the same oak tone explains why the room needed one saturated color.

A checklist for a chair cushion you'll sit on for hours
- Draw the seat: back width, front width, depth, and which way each side curves.
- Mark the back posts and any cut-outs the cushion must fit around.
- Mark every tie on the drawing, then check the photo sent before shipping.
- Keep the pad slim enough to sit inside the seat rails.
- Match the piping to something underfoot, or leave it off.

I once cut a lovely cushion two inches short, and I have not forgotten it. That is why the workshop goes over your measurements with you on the phone. — Maggie

On a dining chair cushion, match the piping to something underfoot, like a cream carpet, and the edge reads soft instead of graphic.

Questions buyers ask next
Where should ties go on a dining chair cushion?
At the back corners, where they wrap the back posts or spindles. Cushions with cut-outs at the back fit around the posts; mark both the cut-outs and the ties on your drawing so nothing is left to guesswork.
Should a dining chair cushion sit inside the seat rails?
On a chair with a framed seat, yes. A pad cut to sit inside the rails stays in place, keeps a slim profile and leaves the wood of the chair visible around it.
What piping color works on a mustard cushion?
Cream is the quiet choice when the floor or carpet is cream: the welt repeats it and the edge stays soft. A darker welt outlines the seat more sharply and draws attention to its shape.
Why do so many dining chairs need trapezoid cushions?
Most dining seats are wider at the front than at the back, so a square pad overhangs at the back posts or leaves gaps at the front. Measure both widths and the depth before ordering.
