A mushroom daybed cushion, and the short message that orders it correctly

Hana reads a taupe daybed cushion and bolster that borrow their color from a patterned rug. Then she writes the order the way it should be written.

The quick answer

To order a daybed cushion right the first time, send one message with the exact length, depth and thickness, the fabric code, the piping color, a daylight photo and whether you want one piece or two. On a twin daybed used as a couch, one piece avoids a center seam, and silicone fiber-ball fill keeps its loft longer than cotton.

Pinned by Hana: the mushroom daybed, bolster to fig

Read the plate from the bolster to the dark piping, then out to the folded throw and the fig.

The numbers match the pins on the plate.

What the rug had already decided

Everything on this daybed was chosen by the rug.

The mushroom taupe of the cushion and bolster comes from the rug's geometric motifs. The dark brown piping comes from its borders. So the daybed and the floor read as one low layer, and the room above can stay light.

The cushion is boxed, with a backrest and a round bolster in the same linen-look weave. A folded cream throw with fringe sits at the far end and lightens the taupe. A wooden tray with books and a mug sits in the middle. Both ends stay free to sit.

Behind, the fig tree and the linen floor lamp stand at different heights. A daybed is a long, low line. Two vertical shapes at unequal heights keep it from feeling flat. The rustic bookcase adds a third, quieter vertical. Nothing here is extra.

The lesson is short. When a rug has a strong pattern, take the cushion color from its motifs and the piping from its darkest line. See the daybed cushion atlas, the bolster pillow atlas and the brown and mushroom cushion sketches. Which line in your rug is the darkest?

The order message, written once

  1. Measure the deck

Length and depth of the surface the cushion lies on, plus the thickness you want. The workshop makes exactly what you write.

  2. Decide one piece or two

On a daybed used as a couch, one piece avoids a seam down the middle. Say which you want.

  3. Name the fabric by code

Color names drift; codes do not. This cushion is linen-look 925. Order swatches first if you are unsure.

  4. Name the piping

Self, contrast or none. For contrast, name the color and where it comes from, such as the rug's darkest border.

  5. Add the extras

Backrest, bolster length and diameter, and the filling you prefer.

  6. Attach one photo

A real project

A twin daybed, one piece, no seam

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about a twin daybed they used as a couch. They wanted one thick cushion, 75 x 38 in (191 x 97 cm).

The workshop first suggested two 38 x 38 in (97 x 97 cm) pieces. They worried about a visible split down the middle. Fair. On a daybed that faces the room, that line is the first thing you see. So the workshop agreed to make it as one piece, 12 in (30 cm) thick.

They also asked about cotton filling. The workshop said silicone fiber balls hold up better over time.

One message, three decisions: size, one piece, filling. That is a good order. The quote checklist lists the rest, fabric swatches before ordering settles the color, and the daybed back cushion pattern covers the sofa look.

Buyer questions: a stubborn discount code, a couch look and a Hemnes stack

  1. A common question

My emailed discount code wiped out the sale price at checkout. What should I do?

    The workshop's answer

Emailed codes are generally meant for larger orders, and a code can replace the standing sale price instead of adding to it. When that pushed one buyer's total up, the shop had them order at the sale price and refunded the code's value afterward to the original payment method.

  2. A common question

I already own a daybed. Can I buy floor-sofa seat covers and filled angled backrests to make it look like a couch?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Two filled angled backrest pillows plus two seat covers can be made in the color you choose and quoted together as one set.

  3. A common question

What size do I write for an IKEA Hemnes daybed cover when two mattresses are stacked?

    The workshop's answer

Standard single Hemnes mattresses are about 78¾ x 31½ in (200 x 80 cm), so write that and add the combined height of both mattresses, which varies by model. A measured stack of about 9½ in (24 cm) is typical and needs no extra allowance. Measure every dimension yourself: the shop makes exactly what you write.

On a daybed cushion, take the fabric color from the rug's motifs and the piping color from the rug's darkest border.

Questions buyers ask next

Is one long daybed cushion better than two square ones?

For a daybed used as a couch, usually yes. Two 38 x 38 in pieces leave a split down the middle that shows from across the room. One 75 x 38 in piece keeps the seat line unbroken.

Which filling keeps a thick daybed cushion from flattening?

For soft fill, silicone fiber balls hold their loft better over time than cotton filling. On a thick daybed cushion, such as a 12 in (30 cm) piece, that difference decides whether the seat still looks full after months of daily use.

How do I pick piping for a daybed in a room with a patterned rug?

Take the cushion color from the rug's main motif and the piping from its darkest line. Here the mushroom fabric matches the geometric shapes and dark brown piping matches the borders, so the daybed and the floor read as one layer.
