A chocolate daybed cushion on walnut, and a project that taught us about foam

A dark cushion on a dark frame, warmed by one rug and one blanket. Beside it, a buyer's project that ended with another supplier and a clear lesson.

The quick answer

A chocolate daybed cushion on a walnut platform stays light because pattern arrives below and beside it: a rust-and-cream kilim on the floor and a folded plaid on the seat. Self piping keeps the dark seat and bolster as single solid shapes. For any custom daybed, agree the foam type first; on outdoor builds it drives both price and performance.

Pinned by Hana: five things on the daybed plate

Five pins, from the self-piped bolster to the kilim that warms the brown from the floor.

The numbers match the pins on the plate.

Dark on dark, then one light textile

Chocolate on walnut. Two dark browns, one resting on the other.

It could be heavy. It isn't, and every reason is visible.

Self piping keeps the seat, the backrest and the full-length round bolster as single, quiet shapes. A contrast welt would outline them and make the dark mass look larger. Here the edge simply turns.

Pattern comes in at two heights. The rust-and-cream kilim on the floor. The folded plaid with its cream fringe on the seat. The same two colors in both, so they read as a pair, not as two ideas.

The tray with a white mug and stacked books sits near the bolster end. The open end stays free to sit. The linen floor lamp, the fiddle-leaf fig and the shelves of ceramics fill the room, so the daybed does not have to. Pale light from the sash window does the rest.

More frames live among daybed cushions, and the weave sits with the linen-look fabrics.

Dark frame. Dark cushion. One light thing, and the room breathes.

A real project

The question: an outdoor daybed in concrete

A buyer got in touch about a luxury outdoor daybed in concrete, about 118 x 99 5/8 in (2995 x 2529 mm). The specification was careful. Two seat cushions, each 58 3/4 x 99 3/8 x 5 7/8 in (1492.5 x 2524 x 150 mm), sized a deliberate 3/8 in (10 mm) and 3/16 in (5 mm) under the frame. Quick-dry reticulated foam at about 2.2 to 2.5 lb/ft³ (35 to 40 kg/m³). A mesh base, a concealed zipper, a same-fabric double welt. Two round head cushions.

The workshop answered with its own version, set out below. The buyer went with a cheaper local supplier.

That is a fair result. The lesson is the useful part: for permanent outdoor seating, agree the foam first. Reticulated quick-dry foam and standard foam make different cushions, in price and in the rain. The dry-fast foam guide explains when to insist.

Buyer questions: daybed sets, stains and a single bed

  1. A common question

Will your Hemnes daybed cover set fit an IKEA Brimnes daybed, and how do I order the mattress cover with backrests but no armrests?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, it fits: order and write the exact size of your daybed mattress. For the mattress cover with backrest cushions and no armrests, choose the full set option, or add the mattress cover and two backrest pillows to the cart one at a time. They ship together.

  2. A common question

Is your daybed fabric a performance or stain-resistant fabric?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop doesn't name a branded performance fabric. It describes its linen as high quality, durable and easy to clean, and points families to the soft microfiber, which is the easiest to wipe clean.

  3. A common question

Could you make a mattress cover that turns a single bed into a sofa?

    The workshop's answer

    Yes. A fitted cover for a 35 1/2 x 74 3/4 x 9 1/2 in (90 x 190 x 24 cm) mattress, plus a bolster running the full 74 3/4 in (190 cm) length, turns a single bed into a sofa. It is ordered through the bench-cushions-with-bolster listing, using its custom option.

When a daybed cushion and its frame are both dark, add one patterned rug and one light textile, and keep the piping self-colored.

Questions buyers ask next

Should a chocolate daybed cushion on a dark wood frame have contrast piping?

Usually not. Self piping lets the seat and bolster read as single solid shapes. A contrast welt outlines every edge and makes the dark mass look larger, which is the opposite of what a dark-on-dark pairing needs.

Where do the tray and books go on a daybed with one bolster?

At the bolster end. That end is already closed, so a tray, a mug and a few books sit there without getting in the way. The open end stays clear for sitting or lying down.

What should be settled first when ordering outdoor daybed cushions?

The foam type: quick-dry reticulated or standard. It changes the price and how the cushion behaves in wet weather, so agree it before fabric, welt or zipper details. The buyer in this project asked for reticulated foam at about 2.2 to 2.5 lb/ft³ (35 to 40 kg/m³).
