A Reading by NateL-Shaped Corner Bench Cushions
What's inside a dove gray L-shaped window bench cushion, and why
Nate reads an L-bench between two bookcases from the inside out: box edge, bolster, corner seat and the foam decisions that keep a long run straight.
SaveThe quick answer
An L-shaped bench cushion works best as two boxed pieces, a long run and a short run, with the deepest seat at the corner and one long bolster along the window for back support. Choose foam thickness from seat height, and firmness from how long people sit. One family's kitchen L took two 4 in (10 cm) cushions.
The cushion, cut open
Cover fabric. A removable, zippered cover. Machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle and air dry.
Piping. A fabric-covered cord sewn into the seams. It sits on the seam line, so it does not change the size.
Fiber wrap. Polyester fiber (Dacron) batting around the foam: it fills the cover out and softens the edges.
Foam core. About 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-resilience foam, firm to medium-firm, cut to the ordered size.
Zipper. Along the back band, as hidden as possible. The zipper side faces down or toward the wall.
Base panel. The underside of the cover. A non-slip fabric backing can cover the whole of it instead.
Pinned by Nate across the L-shaped window bench
Five pins: the window-length bolster, the boxed gray seat, the deep corner, the cable-knit throw and the reclaimed-wood table.

- Window-length bolster
One long bolster along the sill gives back support where square cushions would block the glass.
- Boxed gray seat
A boxed edge keeps the long run straight and shows the soft sheen of gray leather-look fabric.
- Deep corner seat
The short run tucks under the shelving wall, making a deep corner for tucked-up legs.
- Cable-knit throw
A heavy knit over the corner adds the warmth gray needs in a bright room.
- Reclaimed-wood table
A rough, low table keeps a gray seat from looking office-like.

The L from the outside in
Two runs, one corner, one bolster. That is the whole parts list for this bench, and each part has a job.
The long run spans the full width of two tall windows. Instead of square back cushions, one gray bolster lies along the sill and gives back support without blocking the glass. The short run tucks under the bookshelf wall, which makes the corner the deepest seat in the room. That is where the tucked-up legs go.
The cover is dove gray faux leather with self piping and a box edge. On a long run, the box edge is what keeps the line straight from end to end. A smooth face shows a soft sheen and, just as honestly, any dip in the foam underneath. This gray sits in the warm middle, so it gets along with honey wood instead of arguing with it.
The props bring the texture a smooth face lacks: cream and gray linen pillows, a small oatmeal lumbar, the cable-knit throw over the corner, woven baskets of folded blankets, a jute rug. The reclaimed-wood coffee table is rough on purpose, so the gray never looks like an office. A fern, a rubber plant and a fiddle leaf fig keep it alive, and the linen-shade floor lamp stands where the reading happens.
Which seat in your L gets the tucked-up legs, partner?
What goes inside, and how I would choose it
Thickness comes from seat height
Foam thickness is set by how high you want to sit, not by how soft you want it. Measure the bench top to the floor and run the numbers in the seat height calculator.
Firmness follows the longest sit
A reading corner gets long sits with legs tucked up. That argues for a core firm enough to keep the box edge square, not one soft enough to dish at the corner. The foam firmness finder and foam density versus firmness explain the scale.
One core per run
Each run is its own cushion with its own foam, and the join sits at the corner. How that joint is cut decides whether you notice it; see the L-shaped corner joint.
The bolster is a separate part
Along the sill, the bolster is the backrest. Size it to the window run, not the seat, and let the corner keep its full depth.
The sage banquette, two kids and two 4 in cushions
A family had an L-shaped banquette built into their kitchen, painted sage, and needed two seat cushions: 63 x 19 in and 63 3/4 x 19 in (160 x 48 cm and 162 x 48 cm), both 4 in (10 cm) thick. Young kids use it every day, so they asked two sensible questions. Is linen wise? Do the covers come off?
The workshop confirmed the covers are removable and machine washable at 86°F (30°C), and that piping comes at no extra charge. On color, the advice is the part I keep: choose around what is permanent, the sage bench and walls, not the table, which can move. Warm oatmeal with mustard or terracotta piping, and no pure white or cool grays. Different room, different answer from the gray in the photo.
Mid-tone, washable, anchored to the fixed features: an engineering answer to a design question. More layouts in the L-shaped cushion atlas and L-shaped bench measurements.
- Sizes
- 63 x 19 in and 63 3/4 x 19 in (160 x 48 and 162 x 48 cm), 4 in (10 cm) thick
The lesson: With kids, pick mid-tone washable covers and base colors on fixed features, not movable furniture.
Buyer questions: a green that leans teal, a smaller L, and stripes on the turn
- A common question
Is L25 a true green, or does it lean blue?
The workshop's answerL25 is a dark, muted green with a very slight cool undertone. Under warm indoor light it reads deep green; in cool daylight it can lean a little teal. It is not a blue fabric.
- A common question
Could you make a smaller version of the L-shaped floor sofa that fits in 90 x 65 inches?
The workshop's answerYes. Each sofa is 39 in deep, so the L is built from one 65 in sofa and one 51 in sofa for an overall 65 x 90 in. That custom build was quoted at 7 days of production plus 3 to 5 days of delivery.
- A common question
Why don't the stripes line up on every side of my striped cushion?
The workshop's answerStripes are matched on one face. As the fabric turns the corners, a slight shift on the other sides can't be avoided, so find the aligned side and place it facing out.
On the cutting table: the bookshelf L-shaped bench

On an L-shaped bench cushion, put the deepest seat at the corner and one long bolster along the window, so the sill stays clear of back cushions.

Questions buyers ask next
How thick should an L-shaped bench cushion be?
Work from seat height: measure the bench top to the floor, then add foam until the seat lands where you want to sit. One family's kitchen L took two cushions 4 in (10 cm) thick.
Is faux leather a good choice for a window bench cushion?
It gives a smooth face with a soft sheen, and a box edge keeps it crisp on a long run. Pair it with knit throws and linen pillows, which bring the warmth and texture a smooth fabric lacks.
Should an L-shaped window seat have back cushions or a bolster?
Where the back of the seat is a window, one long bolster gives support without covering the glass. Square back cushions suit a solid wall better, like the shelving side of this L.
Should an L-shaped bench cushion be one piece or two?
Two: a long run and a short run, each with its own foam, meeting at the corner. Two pieces are easier to cover, lift and clean, and the join sits where the corner seat is deepest.
