A letter about a pinstripe window seat and the mistakes it dodges
Rosa writes a letter to someone planning a striped window seat, and uses one bright, hushed corner to point out what usually goes wrong.
SaveThe quick answer
The most common mistake with a striped window seat cushion is ordering it too thin: under bright sheers the top washes out, so the stripe shows mainly on the front band. This ivory pinstripe seat is about 5 in (13 cm) deep, with the stripe running vertically on the boxing. Keep plants off the seat, and choose a zip-off cover you can wash.

Dear neighbor,
A letter about that striped window seat
You asked what could go wrong with a striped window seat cushion, so I'm sending you this photograph instead of a lecture. It's an ivory cotton with near-black navy pinstripes, set in a window hung with white sheers, and it gets nearly everything right. That makes it a fine map of the mistakes.
Look at the top first. The light through those sheers flattens it almost to white; you can barely find a stripe up there. Now look at the front. At about 5 in (13 cm) deep, the box edge has become a second surface, and that's where the pinstripe lives, running straight up and down and matched across the face that looks into the room.
Had this been a 2 in (5 cm) pad, the stripe would have had nowhere to show. I've watched folks on my own street make exactly that mistake, then wonder why their pretty striped cotton looked plain once it was home. The stripe direction Pattern is worth ten minutes before you order.
The rest of the list below I've seen go wrong at least once, on porches and in parlors both. How deep is the sill on yours? Measure it tonight, and read on.
Six mistakes this corner quietly avoids
- A thin pad under bright sheers: the top washes out, so a stripe needs a tall front band to be seen.
- Stripes that wander across the front: the face toward the room should be matched and run straight.
- A plant on the seat: the pothos lives on the side table, so there are no pot rings or watering spills on cotton.
- Pillows lined up end to end: one oatmeal linen pillow in the corner leaves the long seat open for sitting.
- A pale cover sewn on for good: in a bright window, a zip-off cover that washes at 86°F (30°C) keeps the stripe fresh.
- Trusting damp glass: against a window that runs with condensation, no indoor fabric stays mildew-free if it sits wet.
Pinned by Rosa: five things beside the sheers
Five pins, from the tall piped edge to the pothos that stays politely off the seat.

- oatmeal linen pillow
A single pillow tucked into the corner keeps the long seat open for sitting.
- trailing pothos
The plant sits off the seat on a side table, adding green without cluttering the cushion.
- stack of art books
Books at seat height make the side table a natural companion to the window seat.
- tall self-piped edge
At about 5 in deep the front band becomes a second surface where the stripe shows most.
- sheer curtains
Sheers wash the top to near-white, so the stripe reads mainly on the front band.

The corner bench that met at 120 degrees
A buyer messaged the workshop about a dining corner bench where the two runs met at 120 degrees. They weren't sure how to measure it, or whether it should be one cushion or two. The workshop asked for photos and a hand drawing with every size on it.
The drawing caught what the eye had missed: the right side was 1 in (2.5 cm) narrower than the left, because a window frame cut into it. One cushion would have fit badly on one side or the other. So the workshop recommended two trapezoids, each cut to its own side and meeting at the angle.
Call that mistake number seven, and it's the one I see most. Folks assume the two sides of a corner are twins. Measure each one on its own; the trapezoid measuring Pattern shows how, angled corner benches get their own Concept Sketch, and there are more straight runs under window seat cushions.
Buyer questions: angled bays, damp glass and paint chips
- A common question
How do I get a price on a bay window cushion with angled sides?
The workshop's answerAngled bay shapes are priced through the trapezoid template listing. Pick the closest size to see the price, then write your exact dimensions, thickness and fabric in personalization, for example 47 1/4 in (120 cm) at the back, 13 3/4 in (35 cm) deep and 54 in (137 cm) at the front.
- A common question
My window seat sits against a single-pane window that gets a lot of condensation. What's the most wipeable fabric?
The workshop's answerVelvet or the Soft Fabric range clean up more easily than textured or absorbent fabrics, and Soft Fabric is the most practical if easy cleaning comes first. Both are upholstery fabrics, not waterproof, so wipe moisture away often and keep the cushion off a wet surface; constant damp can bring mildew to any fabric.
- A common question
Can you match an exact paint color or a CMYK value?
The workshop's answerNot exactly; a printed or digital reference can't be matched precisely. The workshop picks the closest codes from its charts, as it did with two deep reds for a buyer after a brick red, and sends close-up photos to compare. You can also browse the charts and ask for close-ups of any code you like.

A striped window seat cushion under bright sheers needs a tall front band, about 5 in (13 cm), because the stripe shows on the edge, not the top.

Questions buyers ask next
How deep should the edge be for a striped window seat cushion?
Deep enough to give the stripe a surface. In a bright window with sheers, the top of a pale cushion washes out, so a box edge of around 5 in (13 cm) lets a vertical stripe show on the room-facing band.
Should pinstripes run up and down the front band of a window seat?
On the boxing, yes: vertical stripes on the front band read cleanly and can be matched across the face that looks into the room. On the top, direction is your choice, but keep it the same across the whole seat.
Can a potted plant sit on a window seat cushion?
Better not. A pot leaves rings, and watering spills soak into cotton. Put plants on a side table or a shelf beside the seat, as with the pothos here, so the cushion stays dry and clear to sit on.
