Measuring a window seat cushion for an arched alcove, slate pinstripe and all

Rosa reads a long pinstripe cushion on an oak ledge in golden evening light, and walks through the numbers an alcove seat needs before anybody cuts.

The quick answer

To measure a window seat cushion for an alcove, record the length at the back wall and again at the front edge, the depth at both ends and the middle, and the thickness you want. Old plaster alcoves are often out of square. Cushions are made to the exact size you write, so one continuous piece can run the full ledge.

Read the plate top to bottom: sheers first, then the trailing plant, the stripe, the jute and the tile underfoot.

The numbers match the pins on the plate.

The numbers an alcove wants

Neighbor, the prettiest window seats are the hardest to measure. This one sits in a white plaster arch on an oak ledge, with a trailing plant spilling over the far end and a jute rug on terracotta tile below. Lovely. Also, very likely, not square.

My grandmother's porch had a window bench much like it, and the cushion she had made came out an inch long at the front and rubbed the plaster every time somebody sat down. So here is what I measure on an alcove seat:

  • Length at the back wall, corner to corner, where the cushion's back edge will sit.
  • Length at the front edge of the ledge. If it differs from the back, you have a trapezoid, and that is fine, but the workshop needs to know.
  • Depth, front to back, at the left end, the middle and the right end.
  • Thickness, checked against the sill so the cushion doesn't crowd the latch or the sheers.

Where people go wrong: they measure the old cushion instead of the ledge, or they send two lengths and no depth. Cushions are cut to the exact numbers you write, so the numbers need to belong to the ledge, not to a memory.

A long seat like this is often longer than any standard size, and it can still be one continuous piece. Use the window seat measuring pattern, try the size in the bench cushion builder, and browse more arches among the alcove and niche bench sketches. What does your ledge measure at the front?

Why the slate stripe turns gold at sundown

The stripe is slate gray on oatmeal, quiet as a porch at dusk. Linen sheers filter the low sun, and in that light the slate band warms to gold instead of reading cold. A louder stripe would fight the terracotta tile. This one shares the room.

Every prop pulls its weight. The trailing plant softens the square corner at the far end. The jute rug and the tile repeat the warm, natural palette at floor level. The oak ledge frames the cushion from below, which is exactly why depth matters: an overhang would bury that warm wood, and a short cushion would leave a bare strip.

To borrow the mood, pick a stripe whose dark band matches your window frames or ironwork, and let natural fibers do the rest. Striped cloths live on the striped cotton and ticking shelf, and the whole family of seats is in the window seat cushion atlas.

A real project

The corner banquette that was missing one number

A buyer in the US had a big corner banquette, 85.5 in (217 cm) along one side and 94.5 in (240 cm) along the other, and wanted royal blue cushions. She sent both run lengths and asked for a price.

The shop couldn't quote yet. It needed the seat depth. She estimated 24 in (61 cm), and only then did the quote come together, with high-density foam.

Two long runs and no depth is an easy gap to leave on a measuring sheet. Length tells the workshop how far the cushion goes; depth tells it whether you can actually sit on it.

What neighbors asked about long seats

  1. A common question

Do you offer performance fabric? I need something that will survive the odd accident.

    The workshop's answer

Yes. All the fabric charts on the linen bench listing are performance fabrics made for durable daily use. The exception is the striped fabrics, which are 100% cotton and may not be as long-lasting.

  2. A common question

Can I add a matching back cushion to my window seat later on?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. A returning buyer added a back cushion 3 in (7.5 cm) deep, 90 in (229 cm) long and 11 in (28 cm) high in the same corduroy through a custom order. Just give the original fabric code.

  3. A common question

Could you make a cushion about 136 inches long in one piece?

    The workshop's answer

The shop recommends two pieces. One piece is possible, but at that length allow for a 1 to 2 in (2.5 to 5 cm) difference, even though cushions are measured before shipping. A 25 x 136 in (64 x 345 cm) cushion was quoted on that basis.

A window seat cushion for an alcove needs its length taken twice, at the back wall and at the front edge, because old plaster is rarely square.

Questions buyers ask next

How can I tell whether my alcove window seat is out of square?

Measure the length at the back wall and again at the front edge, then the depth at both ends. If the two lengths or the two end depths differ, draw the shape and send the drawing with every number on it.

What thickness works on an alcove ledge under a low window sill?

Choose a thickness that leaves the sill, latch and curtains clear. Stack books to that height on the ledge first and check the window still opens and the sheers still fall freely.

Is a striped cotton cushion a sensible choice for a reading alcove?

For a quiet reading seat, yes. The workshop's striped fabrics are 100% cotton rather than performance cloth, so for heavy daily use or frequent spills a performance weave will last longer.

Can a long alcove seat cushion be made as one continuous piece?

Usually, because cushions are cut to the exact length you write. For extra-long runs around 136 in (345 cm), the workshop advises two pieces and notes that one piece may vary by 1 to 2 in.
