A butter-yellow striped window seat cushion, from the doorway and from the sill

I read this window seat twice: once from the kitchen doorway, once with my nose nearly on the stripe. Each view had its own lesson.

Butter yellow and cream striped window seat cushion with self piping, a linen throw and a white mug under linen sheersSave
Butter-yellow stripes and morning sun make a white shiplap window seat the brightest spot in the house.

The quick answer

A striped window seat cushion reads best from across a room when the stripe is soft, the piping is cut from the same stripe, and the styling stops at one or two props. Here a butter-yellow and cream stripe about 4 in (10 cm) thick glows like sunlight from the doorway, while the box edge only shows up close.

Savannah ·

Dear neighbor,

From the kitchen doorway: yellow that reads as sunlight

Stand ten feet back from this window seat cushion and you hardly see a stripe at all. You see a warm patch of light on white shiplap, as if the morning sun came in early and decided to stay.

That is the trick of a soft butter yellow beside cream. At a distance the two blend into one glow. A lemon yellow would holler; this one hums along with the oak floorboards and linen sheers.

The cushion runs the full length of the recess at about 4 in (10 cm), so from the doorway it reads as part of the house, not something set down on it. Yellow blooms in the garden repeat the stripe through the glass.

Where my eye went, near and far

Five spots on the photograph, from the garden past the glass to the box edge of the seat.

  1. creased linen throw

One crumpled linen throw is all the styling, and it looks lived-in rather than staged.

  2. mug on the sill

A single mug sets the scene as a morning seat.

  3. yellow stripe box edge

Self piping outlines the box without introducing a second color.

  4. white shiplap

Shiplap and oak let a soft yellow read like sunlight rather than paint.

  5. garden in bloom

The yellow flowers outside repeat the stripe through the glass.

Up close: one edge line and two props

Now come close enough to set your coffee down. The self piping, cut from the same striped cotton, draws a thin line around the box edge without bringing in a second color. From the doorway that line vanishes. From the sill it is what makes the cushion look tailored instead of bought. Which way a stripe runs is worth deciding on purpose, and stripe direction is where to start.

The styling is two things. One crumpled flax throw, tossed like somebody just got up. One white mug on the sill, which tells you this is a morning seat.

If your room faces north, borrow the idea. A pale yellow stripe adds warmth a white seat never will. Which way does your window face?

A real project

Two window seats, one terracotta, and a mix-up

A buyer messaged the workshop about a pair of window seats. Both cushions were to be the same terracotta jumbo cord from a listing photo: one 41 3/4 x 18 1/2 in (106 x 47 cm), the other 72 3/4 x 18 7/8 in (185 x 48 cm). Neither size was on the menu, so the workshop said to pick the nearest options, 17 3/4 x 43 1/4 in (45 x 110 cm) and 18 x 76 in (46 x 193 cm), and write the exact numbers in the note.

Then the small one went through in a lighter color by mistake. From across a room, two seats in two shades look like an error. The buyer ordered a replacement cover in the right terracotta and checked the size and fabric code three times before paying.

The lesson: When cushions sit side by side, check that every item in the cart carries the same fabric code before checkout.

Three window-seat questions: your own fabric, the bench, a floor-sofa bed

  1. A common question

Can you make my window seat or banquette cushions from a designer fabric I already have?

    The workshop's answer

Sending in your own fabric isn't practical, so cushions are made from the workshop's own fabric charts. Send the fabric's name and your project details, and the workshop will look for the closest match in its range.

  2. A common question

Do you build the bench or the platform too, or only the cushion?

    The workshop's answer

Only the cushion. The workshop doesn't make benches or platforms, but it makes cushions in any size and thickness your frame needs.

  3. A common question

Could a big L-shaped floor sofa be laid out flat as a bed, or as a conversation pit?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The cushions of the L-shaped floor sofa can be laid out so the whole thing works as a bed.

Two window seat cushions side by side read as one set from ten feet, so every cushion in the cart needs the same fabric code before checkout.

Questions buyers ask next

Why does a butter-yellow stripe look like sunlight on a white window seat?

From a distance a soft yellow and cream stripe blends into one warm tone. Against white shiplap and oak it reads as light on the seat rather than pattern, which warms a north-facing room.

Does self piping show on a striped window seat cushion?

Only up close. Piping cut from the same stripe outlines the box edge in the cushion's own colors, so it disappears from across the room and looks tailored when you sit beside it.

How do I order a pair of window seat cushions in sizes that aren't listed?

Pick the nearest size option for each seat, then write the exact length, depth and thickness in the order note. Check that both cushions carry the same fabric code before checkout, so the pair matches.

P.S. Don't underestimate that mug. Take it off the sill and the seat becomes a display. Leave it there and somebody lives here.
