A green stripe window seat cushion in three kinds of light

Rosa keeps a notebook open on a cream drawer window seat and writes down what the green does from breakfast to lamp-lighting.

Green and white striped window seat cushion on cream drawers with brass cup pulls, rust velvet and leather pillowsSave
Garden green on the seat, rust and cognac in the pillows, brass on the drawers: a classic country palette in one window.

The quick answer

Judge a green stripe window seat cushion in daylight and again in lamplight, never on a screen alone. Cool morning light pushes green toward sage; warm evening light pulls it toward olive and makes rust pillows glow. This one is a firm 3 in (7.5 cm) box with self piping, rust velvet and cognac leather pillows, and brass repeated three times.

Notebook, page one: the same green at breakfast and after supper

The green in this window seat cushion is three different greens before supper, and only one of them is the green on your phone.

Here's what I've been scribbling about all week: a garden green and white stripe on a cream Shaker drawer base, brass cup pulls below, rust velvet and cognac leather pillows piled at one end. I looked at it with my coffee and again with the lamp on. The stripe changed its mind both times.

Overcast garden light comes through that window. Cool daylight like that pushes green toward sage and keeps the white stripe crisp. Lamplight warms the whole seat, so the green slides toward olive and the rust pillow starts to glow like the last coal in the fire pit. Neither one is wrong. They're just different hours.

Your screen is the third light, and the least trustworthy. A phone turned up bright will sell you a green nobody's porch has ever seen. Hold a swatch against your own window at two times of day before you choose; the screen versus daylight Pattern walks you through it. What time of day do you actually sit in your window?

Now the pieces. Rust sits across the color wheel from green, so the rust velvet pillow is the strongest partner that stripe could ask for, and the cognac leather lumbar softens the jump between them. Brass shows up three times: the candlestick on the sill, the cup pulls and the gilt on the green cloth-bound books, whose spines repeat the stripe at eye level. Three repeats keep the warm side steady whatever the hour. The oatmeal linen pillow and the chunky knit throw are the calm ones, there so the rust doesn't have to shout alone.

The cushion is a firm box of about 3 in (7.5 cm), low enough that a cream reveal still shows above the drawer tops. The stripe runs down the front band and self piping keeps the edge tidy. And mixing fabric charts is allowed, neighbor: a velvet pillow, even a velvet piping, sits happily on a striped cotton window seat.

  2. green books on the sill

Green book spines repeat the stripe at eye level.

  3. rust velvet and leather

Rust is green's opposite, so it is the strongest possible partner for this stripe.

  4. brass cup pull

The cushion sits about 3 in high, leaving a cream reveal above the drawer tops.

  5. green stripe front band

The stripe continues down the band, with self piping keeping the edge neat.

Thirty feet of window seat and a cushion with two faces

One buyer wrote in with about 30 ft 10 in (9.40 m) of window seating under four big windows, 13¾ in (35 cm) deep. That's a whole porch worth of sitting inside one house.

They did the smart thing first: ordered free linen-look samples, paying only the shipping, and looked at them in their own windows. Then they learned the longest single cushion the workshop recommends is about 79 to 90 in (2 to 2.3 m). So the run became four cushions, each 90½ in (2.3 m) long and 3 in thick.

Here's the part I love. They chose one piping color on one face and a different piping color on the other, so flipping the cushions changes the look of the whole room. A morning house and an evening house, one set of cushions. The long bench: one piece or two Pattern covers where to split, and the window seat cushion atlas has more runs like it, from living-room windows to bays.

Buyer questions: corners, floor sofas and a grippy base

  1. A common question

Could the cushions for our corner bench be made as an L?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Send the end-to-end length of each leg (a paper sketch helps) and say whether you need backrests. Two L-shaped sets have been made this way from square pieces and shipped by UPS Express.

  2. A common question

Is an L-shaped floor sofa possible?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Buy two sets and the corner backrest is added free, or order a custom layout. One custom L paired a 27½ x 47¼ in (70 x 120 cm) seat with a full backrest and a 27½ x 55 in (70 x 140 cm) seat with a 27½ in (70 cm) backrest at the end only. Round armrest pillows come with L-shaped sets.

  3. A common question

How does the non-slip base on a window seat cushion actually work?

    The workshop's answer

Choose the non-slip option in the personalization menu and the entire bottom face is made in a grip material, the whole underside rather than strips, so the cushion stays in place. It's a small add-on.

Hold a window seat cushion swatch against the window at breakfast and again after supper; the green you order should pass both tests.

Questions buyers ask next

Why does my fabric swatch look different at night?

Warm lamplight shifts colors: greens drift toward olive and rusts glow, while cool daylight pushes green toward sage. Look at a swatch in your own window in the morning and again under your evening lamps before deciding.

How long can a single window seat cushion be?

The workshop recommends about 79 to 90 in (2 to 2.3 m) as the longest single cushion. Longer runs are split into segments, like the four 90½ in (2.3 m) cushions one buyer used for about 30 ft of seating.

Can a reversible cushion have different piping on each side?

Yes. One buyer chose one piping color for the top face and another for the bottom, so flipping the cushions changes the look of the room. It's an easy way to get two moods from one set.

What pillow colors go with a green stripe window seat?

Rust sits opposite green on the color wheel, so a rust velvet pillow is the strongest partner. A cognac leather lumbar softens the jump, and oatmeal linen adds a calm neutral. Repeat one metal, like brass, to hold it together.
