Six mistakes this cobalt stripe corner banquette cushion avoids

Maggie starts where buyers do, with their questions, then reads a storybook dining corner where one crisp stripe keeps the peace.

The quick answer

A banquette cushion against busy wallpaper should be a simple stripe in a color the wall doesn't already use, like cobalt on cream here. Run the stripes along the seat, cut the boxing strip across, and order the corner return cushion in the same layout so the pattern meets cleanly behind the table.

Buyer questions first: piping, measurements and your own fabric

  1. A common question

Can the piping be a different color from the cushion?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Any fabric on the charts can be used as piping, a white body with black piping for example, and using the same fabric for body and piping is fine too. The piping choice does not change the price.

  2. A common question

Should I give you the exact size of my window seat, or take a little off for wiggle room?

    The workshop's answer

Give the exact measurements of the space and don't reduce them. The workshop reviews your diagram and decides any allowance or adjustment with its production team.

  3. A common question

Can I send my own fabric (COM) for a window seat cushion?

    The workshop's answer

No. Cushions are made only from the workshop's own fabrics. Share a photo of the fabric you like and the workshop will point you to the closest matches on its charts, or order samples first.

Now, the reading

Reading the corner: one stripe against a whole forest

Brown woodland wallpaper, full of animals and foliage. A mustard velvet curtain. Rattan overhead, a pothos trailing off a rattan shelf, a yellow pot on the sill, a cactus-shaped vase. Most buyers would reach for another print here. That would have been the first mistake.

Instead the banquette cushion is a plain graphic stripe, cobalt and navy on cream. Blue is the one color missing from the wallpaper, so the cushion reads clearly instead of vanishing into the forest.

Now the tailoring. On the seat, the stripes run with the bench, echoing the long rail of the white beadboard. The boxing strip is cut the other way, so the front edge shows a neat row of short vertical bars, like a ticking hem. Self piping keeps the outline in the family. A straight welt is a kind of honesty, and on a stripe any wander shows at once.

A second cushion runs along the back wall behind the walnut table and meets the first at the corner, in the same stripe layout, so the pattern turns without a jolt. The rattan pendant softens the hard paneling, and the mustard curtain warms the cool blue. The stripe direction guide has diagrams. Which way do your stripes run, dear?

The mistakes, and how this corner dodges them

  • Print on print: a second pattern against woodland wallpaper turns to noise; a simple stripe in a missing color cuts through.
  • Stripes that fight the bench: seat stripes should run along the length, with the beadboard rail.
  • A boxing strip cut the same way as the seat: cut across, the front edge gets its tidy row of bars.
  • A corner return in a different layout: order the back-wall cushion with the same stripe direction so the pattern meets behind the table.
  • Shaving the numbers yourself: send the exact size of the space and let the workshop decide the allowance.
  • A lumbar insert the same size as its cover: go about 1 in (2.5 cm) larger for a plump pillow.

The ticking stripe buyer who came back for lumbar pillows

A buyer in the US chose a navy blue ticking stripe for a custom banquette cushion and loved the result. She came back for three matching lumbar pillows.

Her order was precise: 24 x 12 in (61 x 30.5 cm) covers with slightly larger 25 x 13 in (63.5 x 33 cm) inserts, for a plump look. The covers were removable, zippered and washable. An insert about 1 in (2.5 cm) larger than its cover fills the corners, and I have made the flat-pillow mistake myself, years ago, so I say it with feeling.

More stripes like hers live in navy ticking stripe cushions, and the corner itself is explained in L-shaped cushion corner joints.

The lesson: An insert about 1 inch larger than the cover gives lumbar pillows a full, plump look.

Questions buyers ask next

Which way should stripes run on a banquette seat?

Along the length of the bench, so they echo the long line of the seat and any paneling. The boxing strip on the front edge can be cut across for a row of short bars that reads like a ticking hem.

How do I match stripes on an L-shaped banquette?

Order both cushions together and ask for the same stripe layout on each, so the pattern meets cleanly where the two pieces join in the corner. A drawing with both lengths marked keeps everyone honest.

What cushion pattern works with bold wallpaper?

A simple graphic stripe or a solid. Look for the one color the wallpaper doesn't use, such as cobalt against brown and green woodland, so the cushion stands out instead of adding more noise.

How much bigger should a pillow insert be than its cover?

About 1 in (2.5 cm) larger in each direction gives a full, plump look. A 24 x 12 in lumbar cover, for example, takes a 25 x 13 in insert and fills its corners.
