A Reading by ÉlodieBench Cushions
A cobalt corduroy bench cushion that makes a narrow dining corner feel generous
A letter about blue, about pine, and about the small corner where two people eat, read and drink their tea.
SaveThe quick answer
In a small dining nook, a custom bench cushion cut flush to the bench ends and piped in its own fabric makes the spot feel generous, because one unbroken block of color reads as built-in furniture rather than clutter. Here cobalt corduroy on raw pine carries the corner while walls, shelves and lamp stay pale. Match the cushion's thickness to the frame exactly.

My friends,
A letter from the blue bench
The largest thing in this small dining corner is a single block of cobalt blue, and it is the reason the corner feels roomy.
My friends, look at what surrounds it. A cream wall. A white cone pendant. Pine shelves with books, mugs and a cardboard box. A small table with a white top and black legs, an open notebook, a glass of amber tea. A white spindle-back chair, and a pine chair with a mustard knit cardigan over its back. Underfoot, a cream rug with a red border stripe. Everything is pale, or wood, or small.
Then the bench. A slatted pine frame against the wall, and on it a cobalt corduroy box cushion nearly as tall as the bench apron. It hides the gaps between the slats and softens a hard seat without changing the footprint. The ends are cut flush and square, so it looks built in, not laid on top. The piping is self piping in the same cobalt: a contrast cord would chop that long block of color into pieces.
Raw pine warms the blue down; the mustard cardigan sits opposite cobalt on the color wheel and gives the eye one warm place to rest. Let one color speak and the others listen. That is the small-space trick, and it costs nothing but restraint.
How long is the wall your bench stands against? Put that number into the bench cushion builder, then read the Pattern on corduroy wale, nap and piping.
Pinned by Élodie: blue, pine and one warm note
Five pins, from the squared cobalt corner to the mustard cardigan across the table.

- Cobalt corduroy seat
A deep box cushion on a slatted bench hides the gaps between boards and softens a hard pine seat.
- Squared end corner
The cushion is cut flush to the bench ends so it looks built-in rather than laid on top.
- Raw pine bench frame
Raw pine and a strong blue are a classic pairing; the wood warms the color down.
- Mustard cardigan

- White cone pendant
A plain pendant keeps the eye on the bench, the one saturated block of color in the room.

What this narrow corner gets right
- The cushion is cut flush to the bench ends, with no overhang to catch a hip in a tight walkway.
- Self piping keeps a long run of color in one piece.
- One saturated color, and everything else pale: cream wall, white pendant, pine shelves.
- One warm counterpoint, a mustard knit, opposite the blue.
- The thickness matches the frame. A cushion too thick for its bench buckles at the corners and in the middle.
The 2-inch cushion that arrived at 4
A buyer in the US was moving across the country and ordered two bench cushions in a hurry. The workshop was honest that it was a busy season, then pushed the order through production with priority. The rush cost precision: the 2 in (5 cm) cushion arrived 4 in (10 cm) thick, and the larger cushion had its ties on the wrong side.
Forced into its frame, the thick cushion buckled at the corners and across the middle. The workshop admitted the mistake, remade the cushion at the correct 2 in, and held dispatch until the buyer confirmed they were at the new address. The ties were fixed locally. A thickness that fights its frame never looks generous, and it wears faster too.
Buyer questions: olive, soft fabric and very long seats
- A common question
Which olive or green fabric would look right on a walnut bench?
The workshop's answerIn velvet, Olive Green 123, a muted, earthy olive that suits walnut's warm tones. If you'd rather not have velvet, the linen alternative is L24.
- A common question
What is your soft fabric made of? Is its texture more even than the linen?
The workshop's answerIt is 100% premium polyester, with a much smoother, more uniform texture than linen, which has natural slubs. It wipes clean easily for daily use.
- A common question
My window seat runs past 150 in. Will that be one cushion, or will you split it?
The workshop's answerThe workshop asks which you prefer, and very long cushions can be split into equal sections. For soft back pillows it recommends splitting: one 88 in (224 cm) pillow would sag in the middle, so two 44 in (112 cm) pillows work better.

Questions buyers ask next
Can a bold color work in a small dining nook?
Yes, if it is the only one. A single cobalt bench cushion against cream walls and pale pine gives the eye one place to land; several strong colors in a small space compete and make the corner feel crowded.
Should a bench cushion overhang the bench in a tight space?
No. In a narrow nook, cut the cushion flush to the bench ends and front edge. An overhang catches knees and hips in a tight walkway and makes a built-in bench look as if something was laid on top.
Does a corduroy bench cushion need piping?
It doesn't need it. Corduroy's ribs already give the surface a line, so self piping or no piping keeps a long bench cushion calm. A contrast cord frames the shape but breaks up the color.
