Chocolate, denim, ochre, cream: one cool custom bench cushion among warm ones

A slatted oak bench in a hallway. Four cushions, stacked. The blue is the question, and the wood answers it.

The quick answer

A cool color can sit among warm ones on a custom bench cushion if the shades alternate in value: dark, cool, bright, pale. Here denim blue sits between chocolate and ochre on an oak hallway bench. To choose, lay real swatches on your bench in daylight; warm pinks and oranges shift most between screen and room.

Four colors, named from the photograph

  • Chocolate#4A3226The darkest, on top. It anchors the stack.
  • Denim blue#5E7A96The one cool color, set between two warm ones.
  • Ochre#C8962FThe brightest. It echoes the dried wheat in the jug.
  • Cream#E8DFCBThe quiet neutral at the base.

Pinned by Hana: five marks in the hallway corner

Five pins mark the chocolate, denim, ochre and cream cushions and the stoneware jug of eucalyptus and wheat beside them.

  1. Chocolate cushion

The darkest shade on top anchors the stack.

  2. Denim blue

The one cool color, placed between two warm ones for contrast.

  3. Ochre cushion

Ochre is the brightest shade and echoes the dried wheat.

  4. Cream base

Cream sits at the bottom as the neutral option.

  5. Jug with wheat

Eucalyptus and wheat bring in both the green and ochre tones.

Why the blue belongs, and what the jug is doing

The blue is the only cool color here. It works because of where it sits.

Chocolate on top. Denim blue below it. Then ochre, then cream. Dark, cool, bright, pale. Each cushion differs from its neighbor in more than hue, so the eye never has to work to tell them apart.

The oak does the rest. Its honey tone sits between the ochre and the chocolate, and beside that warmth the denim reads calm rather than cold.

The weave is crinkled, with no piping. Without a welt the edge stays soft. That suits a hallway, where a bench cushion is a place to sit for one minute and pull on boots. The texture belongs to the bouclé and teddy family.

A stoneware jug holds eucalyptus and dried wheat. The eucalyptus brings a green the cushions lack. The wheat repeats the ochre. Clothbound books lie in a low pile, and a Moroccan-style rug warms the floor. Together they say this bench is used, not staged.

For a mudroom or entryway bench, take the rule, not the colors. Alternate dark and light. Let one color be the odd one out. Which color on your bench would that be?

One cool color. Three warm ones. The wood decides.

A real project

A pink that arrived orange

One buyer wrote in after a dining bench cushion arrived. They had chosen a pinkish shade to match their room. In their hands it looked strongly orange.

The workshop checked. The ordered fabric had been used. Orange and pink tones shift most between a screen and a real room, it explained, and it sent side-by-side photos of the listing fabric and the cloth on the cushion.

Seeing both, the buyer changed course entirely: a different color, with contrast piping. The workshop made the new cover and did not ask for the first one back.

Warm pinks and oranges are the hardest tones to judge on a screen. Order a swatch first. Our Pattern on screen versus daylight explains why, and fabric swatches covers how to ask for them.

Buyer questions: a thin seat, a photo green and paint chips

  1. A common question

Can you make a very thin window seat cushion, about 3/4 in, so my window still opens?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Cushions 3/4 in (2 cm) thick are made to order, including a pair at 67.9 x 21.3 in (172.5 x 54 cm) and 51.2 x 20.9 in (130 x 53 cm). At that thickness the foam must be cut evenly and sized to the cover or it bulges, so give your absolute maximum height including the cover.

  2. A common question

I want the green from the main photo, but it isn't on the color chart. Can I still get it?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Choose Khaki, or write 'green like the listing picture' in the order notes, and that is the color you receive. An interior designer ordered for a client exactly this way.

  3. A common question

Could you photograph the fabric next to my paint colors so I can see if they work together?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. For one buyer the workshop prepared visuals of the two closest pink-flecked fabrics, P-57 on a warm taupe base and P-63 on a deeper wine base, against their two paint colors, and redid them when a color was misread. Treat these as guides; screens shift color slightly.

Questions buyers ask next

Can a blue bench cushion work with warm wood and brown tones?

Yes. Place the blue between warmer shades and next to honey-toned oak, and it reads calm rather than cold. The stack here runs chocolate, denim blue, ochre and cream, so each cushion contrasts with the one beside it.

Why do pink and orange cushions look different when they arrive?

Warm pinks and oranges shift the most between a screen and a real room. One buyer's pinkish choice read strongly orange in person. Ask for side-by-side photos or a physical swatch before you commit to these tones.

Does a hallway bench cushion need piping?

No. These four have box edges with no piping, which gives a softer outline that suits a quick-sit hallway bench. Piping is chosen per order, so add it when you want a sharper, more tailored edge.
