A letter about a blush stripe window seat that makes a small bedroom feel roomy

Rosa writes about a honey oak nook with sheer curtains and peonies, and the 4-inch cushion that lets a narrow window seat do the work of a daybed.

Soft blush stripes pick up the peonies on the sill, while honey oak paneling keeps the pink from turning sugary.

The quick answer

A narrow bedroom window seat feels generous when its cushion is a deep box of about 4 in (10 cm), so it reads like a daybed pad, and when every pillow and throw is cream so only the stripe carries color. Choose blush from a physical swatch in your own window light, since screens push pinks toward orange or gray.

Dear neighbor,

Dear neighbor, about the pink seat in the oak nook

Some of the smallest seats in a house get the most use, and a bedroom window seat is one of them. It's where you curl up with coffee before anyone else is awake. So it has to feel bigger than it is.

This one does, and I want to tell you why. The nook is paneled in honey oak on every side, with sheer white curtains and a stoneware vase of pink peonies on the sill. On the seat sits a blush and cream striped window seat cushion, cut as a deep box of about 4 in (10 cm). A thin pad would have made it a perch. This depth makes it a daybed pad, and in a bedroom that is the whole point.

Three ways a narrow nook is made to feel generous

  • One color, said twice. The blush in the striped cotton shows up again in the peonies, and nowhere else. The eye rests instead of hopping around.
  • Everything else is cream. Three cream pillows, a cream fringed throw, a cream vase. With nothing competing, the walls seem to step back.
  • A place to curl, not just to sit. The throw folds over the far end, right where you'd lean on the paneling with your knees up. The depth of the box makes that comfortable.

Pink on honey oak works because both are warm. The wood sets the tone and keeps the pink from turning sugary. Pinks are tricky on a screen, though, so read our note on screen color versus daylight before you pick one.

What color is the wood in your nook?

Pinned by Rosa: peonies, pillows, throw and the striped band

Four pins mark where the blush shows up and where cream takes over.

  1. peonies on the sill

The peonies repeat the blush of the stripe, so the only color in the nook comes in two places.

  2. cream pillows

Every pillow is cream, letting the stripe carry the pattern alone.

  3. fringed cream throw

The throw folds over the far end, where a sitter would curl up against the paneling.

  4. blush stripe side band

A deep box of about 4 in makes the seat read like a daybed pad, suited to a bedroom.

A real project

An L of corduroy, five soft backs and a green matched by eye

A family in the US was building a kitchen banquette: an L of two corduroy seats with five back pillows. The seats were narrow, much like a window seat, at 16 7/8 x 50 1/4 in (43 x 128 cm) and 17 3/8 x 77 5/8 in (44 x 197 cm), all 3 in (7.5 cm) deep. The backs were two at 25.5 x 18 in (65 x 46 cm) and three at 30 5/8 x 18 in (78 x 46 cm), filled with softer shredded foam.

Here's the part I love. They wanted the backs in a second fabric, and the plain velvet greens looked too far off beside the corduroy. So the shop matched a green soft fabric by eye instead of by name. It took 7 to 10 days to make and 3 to 5 to arrive.

When you mix fabrics, match the color you see, not the color name on the label.

Buyer questions: angled benches, wrong numbers, washable covers

  1. A common question

We just built a bench with angled ends. Can you make a trapezoid cushion to fit it?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. One bench took a trapezoid 103 in (262 cm) along the long edge, 56 in (142 cm) along the opposite edge and 34 in (86 cm) on each side, 3 in (7.5 cm) thick.

  2. A common question

I typed the wrong measurements into my order. Is it too late to fix them?

    The workshop's answer

Not while production is still under way. The shop confirms the corrected sizes in writing and sends a payment link for any difference, as when two cushions went from about 11 3/4 to 13 3/4 in square (30 to 35 cm). Once the fabric had already been cut; the shop stopped and recut it.

  3. A common question

Do the covers zip off, and can they go in the washing machine?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Every cover has a zipper and comes off easily, and it can be machine washed at 86°F (30°C) or lower. That holds for the linen-look, corduroy, velvet and trapezoid cushions, and the foam insert is included in the price.

Blush pink on honey oak stays calm because both are warm. Let the wood set the tone and keep every pillow cream.

Questions buyers ask next

How deep should a bedroom window seat cushion be for curling up?

About 4 in (10 cm) as a box cushion. At that depth the seat reads like a daybed pad rather than a perch, which suits a nook where you sit sideways with your knees up.

Will a pink cushion look too sweet against wood paneling?

Not on warm wood. Honey oak and blush are both warm, so the wood sets the tone and the pink stays soft. Keep the pillows and throw cream so the stripe is the only pattern.

Why do pink fabrics look different online than at home?

Screens often push pinks toward orange or gray. Order a physical swatch and look at it in the window where the cushion will sit, at the time of day you use the seat most.
