A navy corduroy window seat cushion that makes a narrow alcove feel roomy
A letter from Rosa about a small bedroom alcove, an oak box with low arms, and the navy cushion that turns a tight spot into an invitation.
SaveThe quick answer
A window seat cushion in a narrow alcove feels generous when it is cut to sit inside the side arms, in a color that deepens the space. Measure between the arms at the top and at the base, since they are often not square. For a back cushion on a shallow seat, 2 in (5 cm) is the thinnest that holds its shape.

Dear neighbor,
A letter about your narrow window
You wrote that your window is narrow and you're afraid a cushion will make it feel smaller. Pull up a chair, because I want to show you a photograph that says the opposite.
It is a bedroom alcove painted the color of wet clay. In it sits an oak box seat with two low side arms, and between those arms lies a navy corduroy cushion, cut to sit inside them the way a mattress sits in a bed frame. It stops just below the tops of the arms. Nothing hangs over, nothing pokes past. The wood frames the fabric, and a framed thing always looks deliberate.
That is the first small-space trick: let the furniture hold the cushion. An edge that overshoots a narrow seat eats the room. An edge that tucks inside gives the room back.
Before you order, measure between the arms at the top and again at the base. Side cheeks on a window box are often not quite square, and a quarter inch matters when fabric meets wood on both ends. How to measure a window seat cushion shows where to put the tape.

Five pins, from the navy seat tucked between oak arms to the sandy vases on the sill.

- Navy cushion in oak frame
Cut to sit inside the side arms like a mattress in a bed frame.
- Rust linen pillow
The pillow borrows the clay wall color, tying the seat to the room.
- Ceramic bud vases
Sandy ceramics keep the sill quiet so the view stays the star.
- Vintage books
Worn spines in tan and cream match the oak.
- Oak side arm

Navy on oak, rust on clay
Now the color, which is the second trick. Navy is dark, and dark things settle back into a corner. Against pale oak, that navy makes the alcove read deeper than it is, like looking into a lit doorway at dusk. The self piping follows the same navy, so the edge doesn't draw a bright line across the smallest part of the room.
The rust linen pillow is borrowed straight from the walls. That one pillow ties the seat to the alcove, so it looks built in rather than brought in. The beige linen pillow beside it is the quiet friend who lets rust do the talking.
Up on the sill, three sandy ceramic bud vases and a row of worn vintage books keep to one range of tan and cream, the same family as the oak. When the sill stays quiet, the view gets the room. The cream wool rug below is for bare feet on a winter morning, and the soft winter light does the rest.
Where does your light come in, from the side or straight ahead? Look at that before you pick a navy or a paler shade. More seats like this one wait in the window seat cushion atlas, the fabric lives with corduroy, and sleeping corners are gathered under bedroom cushions.
The cut-out that came out backward
Here is a story from a past order that every narrow-seat owner should hear. A buyer ordered two cushions, one of them with a corner cut out, and sent a drawing with the sizes marked. They arrived quickly and looked great.
Except for one thing. The cut-out cushion had been sewn mirror-image, so when it went into its corner the zipper ended up on top, staring at the ceiling.
The shop sewed a new cover with the zipper underneath and sent it by express courier, and the buyer was kind enough to leave a good review. My lesson from it: when a cushion has a cut-out on one side only, write on your drawing which face is up and which edge takes the zipper. Notched cushion cut-outs has more on drawing them.
On the cutting table: the oak window box

Have it made
Have this made — ask Rosa’s workshop
Every good cushion I know started with a long porch chat. This is the short version: leave your number and the workshop will call. — Rosa
Leave your details and the workshop will call you to confirm measurements, fabric, foam and piping. No prices, dates or payment on this page: it is a request, not an order.
Buyer questions: backs, centimeters and a very slim cushion
- A common question
Can you make back cushions to go with my bench cushion?
The workshop's answerYes, in the same fabric so the set matches. They can be built with firm foam inside like the seat, which is structured and holds its shape upright, or as a soft filled pillow, which is plumper and more relaxed. Tell the shop which look you want and your sizes.
- A common question
My measurements are in centimeters. Can you make a bench cushion to exactly those numbers?
The workshop's answerYes. The cushion is made to the exact depth, length and thickness you give, for example 27.6 in deep, 74.8 in long and 3.1 in thick (70, 190 and 8 cm), and you get a custom order link. Double-check that your figures are in centimeters and not inches, because that changes the quote.
- A common question
My seat is only 16 in deep. Could the back cushion be just 1 to 1.5 in thick so it doesn't steal more depth?
The workshop's answerThe thinnest the shop makes is 2 in (5 cm). Thinner foam loses its structure and flattens quickly against a backrest. At 2 in, a foam-filled back cushion stays supportive while taking very little depth off a 16 in (41 cm) seat.
On a narrow window seat, cut the cushion to sit inside the side arms, like a mattress in a bed frame, and measure between them at top and base.

Questions buyers ask next
What color makes a small window seat look bigger?
A deep color such as navy settles back into an alcove and contrasts with pale wood, so the space reads deeper. Add one pillow in the wall color to tie the seat to the room, and keep the sill in a single quiet range.
Should a window seat cushion sit on top of the side arms or between them?
When the arms are low, between them. Cut the cushion to sit inside the arms, just below their tops, the way a mattress sits in a bed frame. Measure the gap at the top and at the base, because cheeks are often not square.
Is corduroy a good fabric for a bedroom window seat?
Corduroy gives a soft, ribbed surface that suits a bedroom seat used for reading and resting. For hard daily use or a rental, the workshop has steered buyers toward linen or performance fabrics instead.
How do I send measurements for a cushion with a cut-out?
Draw the cushion as seen from above, mark every edge plus the cut-out's width and depth, and note which face is up and where the zipper goes. A cut-out on one side only can be sewn mirror-image if the drawing doesn't say.
