Dusty mauve corduroy on an oak window seat, and how to order a cushion like it the first time

An alcove this exact leaves no room for guesswork. First the mauve seat, then the codes, swatches and one clear message that get a custom cushion right on the first try.

The quick answer

To order a custom window seat cushion right the first time, send one message with every size, the fabric code, the piping choice and a photo or sketch of the seat. Order swatches before choosing a color, and group several cushions into a single custom listing so they share one checkout and one color plan.

Mauve corduroy softens a bedroom alcove built from pale oak and white cabinetry. The wide wale catches light from the garden window and looks almost velvety.

The seat runs from the hearth to the window corner, so it gets both the fire's warmth and the forest view. A knit throw hangs ready over the end.

Up close, the wide wale looks almost like chenille rope, and the self piping becomes a line of soft beads along the top edge.

Seen from knee height, the self piping shows as a beaded line where the boxing strip meets the top. The corner is sewn square with no puckering.

Stacked corners make it easy to compare how each corduroy color takes the light. All three are finished with self piping in their own fabric.

Mustard and cool blue-gray are an easy pair: the wall calms the yellow and the yellow warms the wall. The oak chest links both to the floorboards.

Pinned by Rosa: an alcove built to the inch

Start with the mauve seat, then read outward to the oak plinth, the brass lamp and the rattan pendant that marks this as its own spot.

  1. Mauve corduroy seat

One muted color is enough when everything else is wood, white and jute.

  2. Oak plinth base

The cushion stops flush with the plinth so nothing catches the wardrobe door.

  3. Brass mushroom lamp

Warm brass picks up the rosy undertone of the corduroy.

  4. Pilea on oak sill

The sill stays usable as a shelf because the cushion is not too tall.

  5. Rattan bell pendant

Hung over the seat, it marks the alcove as its own reading spot.

Why the mauve works, and why the fit had to be exact

This window seat is boxed in on every side: the deep garden window at one end, a white shaker wardrobe at the other, an oak plinth below. So the window seat cushion had to be cut to the box, not to a standard size. Any overhang at the front and the wardrobe door would catch it every morning.

The color is one muted note in a room of wood, white and jute. Dusty mauve with an antique-rose undertone, in a wide-wale corduroy that catches the summer light from the window and looks almost like velvet. The brass mushroom lamp picks up that warm undertone, and the rattan pendant hung above makes the alcove a reading spot of its own.

Look at the height, too. The cushion is about a third of the plinth: thick enough to sit cross-legged on, low enough that the sill still holds a pilea and a lean of books. The fluted oak side table and the flat-weave jute rug keep everything else quiet, and that is exactly what lets one soft color carry a bedroom corner.

Four cards for ordering it right the first time

  1. Measure the box at both ends

Take the width at the front edge and again at the back wall, plus the depth at each end. Alcoves beside cupboards are rarely square. Write the numbers on a paper sketch and photograph it.

  2. Order swatches before you choose

Mauve, rose and taupe shift between screens. Look at swatches on the seat in daylight and again under your evening lamp before settling on a code.

  3. Write codes, not color names

Put the fabric code for the body and the code for the piping in the order note, one line each. This mauve corduroy is catalogued as V04; a code leaves nothing to interpretation.

  4. Send every size in one request

Several cushions for one room, or one house, belong in a single message. Ask for one combined custom listing so everything is priced, cut and checked out together.

A real project

Four sizes, two linen shades, one checkout

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about a set of built-in benches and a small ledge, asking about neutral linens. They sent three custom sizes: 48 x 20 in (122 x 51 cm), 41 x 18.75 in (104 x 48 cm) and a little 14.5 x 9 in (37 x 23 cm) piece for the ledge.

The workshop sent back its natural linen series chart and one quote covering all three. Then the buyer added a fourth, 60.5 x 17 in (154 x 43 cm), in a second natural shade. Instead of a second order, the workshop made one combined custom listing with all four cushions on it.

That is ordering smart, neighbor: one message, one chart, one listing, and one checkout instead of four. The what to send for a quote pattern and the swatches before ordering notes cover the rest. If your order runs to several sizes, which one would you measure twice?

Buyer questions: washable cloth, trade pricing, loose backrests

  1. A common question

Do you carry performance fabrics that wash easily?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. All the workshop's fabrics are machine-washable performance fabrics, and they are pre-shrunk, which suits busy, high-use spots.

  2. A common question

I'm an interior designer. Is there a designer or bulk discount?

    The workshop's answer

There is no formal designer program, but multi-piece orders have been given bulk pricing, usually from about 5 or 6 pieces. The workshop has still worked on price for a three-cushion project, and once for two cushions ordered together, so send the whole list in one message.

  3. A common question

Do your L-shaped backrests attach with velcro, or can I use them as ordinary cushions on my own modular sofa?

    The workshop's answer

They have no velcro or other attachments, so they work anywhere as standalone cushions. An L-shaped backrest measures 39 x 39 in (100 x 100 cm) along its two arms.

The fastest custom cushion order is one message: every size, the fabric code, the piping code and a photo of the seat, all sent together.

Questions buyers ask next

What belongs in the note when ordering a custom window seat cushion?

The exact size, including the width at front and back if the space is boxed in, the fabric code for the body, the piping code, and a photo or sketch of the seat. Clear codes and numbers save a round of follow-up questions.

Why order swatches for a muted color like mauve?

Muted colors change the most between a screen and a room. A swatch seen in daylight and again under a warm lamp shows whether the mauve reads rosy or gray in your space before the full cushion is cut.

Can cushions in different sizes and shades share one order?

Yes. Send every size and shade together and ask for one combined custom listing. One buyer added a fourth cushion in a second linen shade, and the workshop folded all four into a single listing.

How thick should a window seat cushion be when the sill doubles as a shelf?

Keep it low enough that the sill stays usable. In this alcove the cushion is about a third of the plinth height, enough to sit cross-legged on while books and a plant still fit on the sill.
