The charcoal chalk-stripe window seat cushion you can spend an afternoon on

Rosa on a blush bedroom alcove made for lingering, and on a 109 in seat that got a notch instead of a smaller cushion.

Dark charcoal grounds a soft blush room; mustard, lattice and a tasselled round pillow add the warmth.

The quick answer

A window seat cushion for long sitting needs a firm box cushion that fills the whole seat, pillows stepped for back support, and a spot for a cup. This charcoal chalk-stripe cushion runs the full width of a blush alcove, with mustard, lattice and round tasselled pillows behind. Where a casing overhangs, notch the back edge instead of shrinking the cushion.

An afternoon in a blush alcove

A seat you use for five minutes can be anything. A seat you use for a whole Sunday afternoon has to be built for it, and this one is.

The walls are washed in blush plaster, pretty and soft and one step from sugary. The cushion is what stops it: a charcoal box cushion with fine chalk-white stripes, self piped, running the full width of the white paneled seat. Deep gray anchors the room without the hard edge black would bring.

Kids and dogs are the real quality control, and on a seat this inviting they will find it. A charcoal ground with a fine stripe forgives the muddy paw and the dropped cookie that a pale linen would keep as a souvenir. How long do you actually sit in yours on a slow weekend, neighbor?

Pinned by Rosa: the lingering seat

Five pins, from the charcoal stripe on the seat to the throw basket waiting in the corner.

  1. Charcoal chalk stripe

A deep gray ground anchors the soft blush walls without the harshness of black.

  2. Mustard linen pillow

The tallest pillow sits at the back and brings the warmest color.

  3. Lattice pillow

Rust stitching on cream bridges the mustard and the pink.

  4. Tasselled round pillow

A round shape in front breaks up all the straight lines of bench and window.

  5. Throw basket

The knitted throw repeats the oatmeal of the rug and keeps the corner soft.

Built for the long sit

Comfort for long sitting comes down to three things, and all three are in this picture.

Support behind you. The pillows step down in height: mustard linen tallest at the back, a cream pillow with rust lattice stitching in the middle, a round dusty-pink pillow with tassels in front. You can sink into that stack at any depth. The round one also breaks up all the straight lines of bench and window.

A place for your things. A walnut side table holds the cup, a small candle and the pothos, so nothing balances on the cushion.

Warmth within reach. A wicker basket holds an oatmeal knitted throw that repeats the cream rug. When the light fades you reach down instead of getting up.

The sheer curtains hang outside the recess, framing the seat instead of covering it, so the daylight stays soft on the page. Striped cloth like this lives with our linen and cotton-linen fabrics, and more seats wait among our window seat cushions.

A real project

A notch 96 1/4 in long

A buyer in the US had a window seat 109 1/4 in (277.5 cm) long and 25 in (63.5 cm) deep, with a window casing 3/4 in (2 cm) deep sitting 1 1/2 in (4 cm) above the seat. The casing stopped 6 in (15 cm) short of the left end and 7 in (18 cm) short of the right.

The easy answer would have been a shallower cushion with gaps along the back. The workshop drew a notch instead, 3/4 in deep and 96 1/4 in (244.5 cm) wide along the back edge, so the cushion tucks flush under the casing and keeps its full depth at both ends. The notched cushion cost the same as a rectangle.

Color took a few tries; the first linen close-ups read too gray, and she settled on warm linen L-02, 4 in (10 cm) thick. She even suggested trimming the depth a touch so the front wouldn't spill over the edge. That's somebody who has sat in a lot of window seats. Our notch and casing Pattern shows how to measure one.

Buyer questions: codes, quotes and odd shapes

  1. A common question

Which fabric and piping are on the cushion in your listing photo?

    The workshop's answer

Send a screenshot of that exact photo, since a listing shows several cushions, and the workshop names the codes. Past answers include velvet P-60 with P-67 piping, linen 916 with 936 piping, and L-09 with 913 piping.

  2. A common question

What does a custom window seat or bench cushion cost?

    The workshop's answer

    Price follows size and fabric, so send your measurements for a quote. Recent requests ran from sill pads of 14 x 44 in (36 x 112 cm) and 16 x 48 in to a 14 1/2 x 72 in bench base, an 84 x 16 in sill, a 20 x 70 in linen seat, three 16 x 32 in cushions for a 96 in bench, and a pair of 94 x 20 x 5 in bench cushions.

  3. A common question

Why can't I order my trapezoid cushion from the rectangular listing?

    The workshop's answer

Trapezoids take extra cutting and sewing, so they're priced differently and made on a separate production line; for one 102 1/2 x 24 in size the trapezoid cost noticeably more. If one comes through the rectangular listing, the workshop cancels and refunds in full so you can reorder, or sends a link to pay the difference.

A window casing that overhangs the seat calls for a notch in the cushion's back edge, not a smaller cushion with gaps behind it.

Questions buyers ask next

What makes a window seat comfortable for hours?

A box cushion that fills the whole seat, pillows at several heights so you can lean at any depth, and a surface nearby for a cup. A throw within reach helps once the afternoon cools.

How do you fit a cushion under an overhanging window casing?

Notch the back edge. Measure how deep the casing sits, how high above the seat, and where it starts and stops; the notch runs between those points, so the cushion tucks under and keeps full depth at the ends.

Is charcoal a good color for a bedroom window seat?

In a pale or warm room, yes. Deep gray anchors soft walls without the harshness of black, and a fine stripe hides everyday marks better than a plain pale fabric on a seat used every day.
