A Reading by MaggieBench Cushions

A black-and-white striped bench cushion, and the mistakes it avoids

Harsh flash, a dark bookcase, a plain oak bench. Maggie reads a striped cushion that should have vanished in this photo, then lists what buyers get wrong on the order form.

Bold black-and-white stripes stay crisp under hard flash, turning a plain oak bench into a reading perch.

The quick answer

The most common custom bench cushion mistakes are picking a dark solid for a dark corner, letting stripes change direction at the edge, ordering an angled seat on the rectangle listing, and expecting a single piece past 8 ft long. This black-and-white stripe runs front to back and down the gusset, and seats from 98 in (249 cm) up are usually made in two pieces.

A striped bench cushion that survives bad light

Hard flash, a dark corner, a white wall with a black shadow thrown across it. Most cushions die in a photo like this. This one does not, and that is the lesson.

The black-and-white stripe holds its ground because the contrast is total. Where a plain charcoal cover would sink into the dim bookcase, the stripes keep the seat visible. Mistake one, avoided: a dark solid for a dark corner.

The stripes run front to back and drop straight down the gusset. That keeps the box shape readable from any angle. Mistake two, avoided: stripes that change direction at the edge, so the cushion looks like two pieces sewn by strangers. A straight welt is a kind of honesty, and the self piping here follows the stripe without a wobble.

The open box-frame oak legs show beneath the cushion and echo the tall oak bookcase. An open paperback and two stacked hardbacks say reading perch, not hallway drop zone, and the hardbacks give scale to the cushion's thickness. The small lamp glowing on a shelf is the only warm light in the frame. A brown upholstered armchair and a bordered sisal rug keep the rest in wood and fiber, so the stripe is the only loud thing.

More on direction in the striped cushion pattern, more perches under reading nook cushions, and the cloth itself on the striped cotton shelf.

  1. Striped front gusset

Stripes turn the corner and drop straight down, so the box shape stays crisp from any angle.

  2. Open paperback

A book left open signals a reading perch, not a hallway seat.

  3. Stacked hardbacks

Books piled at the far end give scale to the cushion's thickness.

  4. Open box-frame legs

Squared oak frames show beneath the cushion and echo the bookcase.

  5. Small shelf lamp

The only warm light in the frame, glowing inside the bookcase.

Four order-form mistakes, and the fix for each

  • Ordering an angled bay seat on the rectangle listing. It gets cancelled and refunded so you can reorder on the trapezoid listing with every edge measured.
  • Expecting one piece past 8 ft. Requests from 98 in (249 cm) to 141 in (358 cm) were all offered in two pieces.
  • Describing a curve in words. A scaled drawing of a rounded end is what makes a shaped cushion quotable.
  • Copying the size of a worn-out cushion. Take the numbers from the bench itself, end to end and front to back.
A real project

The bench with one rounded end

An owner in the US had a custom bench, 33 x 20 in (84 x 51 cm), with one rounded end, and sent the shop drawings that showed the exact curve. The workshop asked for exact dimensions, worked out the pattern and sent a quote. In the end the buyer went with a cheaper option elsewhere.

No hard feelings, dear. Two useful truths came out of it. A scaled drawing of the curve is what makes a shaped cushion quotable. And a curved piece costs more than a rectangle of the same size, because the pattern has to be worked out before anything is cut. The curved cushion pattern and rounded corner measuring show what to send, and the bench cushion atlas has more shapes.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

What would a bench cushion cost in my size?

    The workshop's answer

It depends on size and fabric. Real quotes have covered everything from an 11.5 x 18.5 x 4 in linen pad with piping to a 17 x 73.5 in bench cushion, and a pair 16.5 in deep and 3 in thick, at 62.375 and 45.5 in long, quoted together. Send exact numbers and a fabric choice.

  2. A common question

My bay window seat has angled ends. Which listing do I use?

    The workshop's answer

The trapezoid listing, not the rectangle one. In Add Personalization, upload a drawing with every edge measured plus a photo of the seat; a hand sketch on paper is fine. An angled shape ordered on the rectangle listing is cancelled and refunded so you can reorder on the right one.

  3. A common question

Can you make one continuous cushion 8 to 11 feet long?

    The workshop's answer

Usually not. Very long cushions are made and shipped in two pieces; requests at 98, 105, 136 and 141 in were all offered that way, and a single 104 in (265 cm) piece was not possible. A 38 x 75 in daybed cushion can still be one piece, though two 38 x 38 in pieces were suggested first.

A striped bench cushion in a dark corner needs total contrast: black and white stays visible where a plain charcoal cover disappears.

Questions buyers ask next

Should bench cushion stripes run front to back or side to side?

Front to back is the classic choice. The stripes run across the depth and drop straight down the front gusset, so the box shape reads clearly from any angle and the cushion never looks pieced together.

What fabric keeps a bench visible in a dim corner?

High contrast. A black-and-white stripe stays crisp even in poor or harsh light, where a plain dark cover sinks into the shadows of a bookcase. Add one small warm lamp nearby and the corner reads as a reading spot.

Does a rounded end change how I order a bench cushion?

Yes. Send a scaled drawing of the curve along with the overall length and depth, so the pattern can be worked out before cutting. Expect a shaped cushion to cost more than a rectangle of the same size.
