The Cutting Table · a common question

Does the piping go around both the top and bottom of the cushion?

Also asked as:Piping top and bottom? Is the cushion double-sided?

Yes, both edges, dear. And if you like a little mischief, each edge can wear its own color.

The quick answer

Yes, the piping runs around both the top and bottom edges of the cushion, and both faces are cut from the same fabric, so it can be flipped. You can even choose a different piping color for each side: four linen-look cushions about 90 in (2.3 m) long were made with one piping color on top and another underneath.

Two edges, two faces, one fabric

Right, then: both. On a box cushion, the piping runs all the way around the top edge and the bottom edge, and both faces are cut from the same fabric. So the cushion flips. A season of sun on one face, turn it over, carry on.

It also means each edge can wear its own welt. Pick one contrast piping for the top and another for the underside, and a flip changes the room. The piping Pattern covers match, contrast and none.

A real project

Four long cushions, two moods

A buyer wrote to the workshop wanting four long bench cushions that could change character with a flip. They were made in linen-look L05, each about 90 x 14 in (2.3 m x 35 cm) and 3 in (7.5 cm) thick, with L70 piping on one side and L63 on the other. Same cushions, two looks, no second set to store. Which color would you put on the underside?

Ordering a two-color piped cushion

  • Write the body code, then a piping code for each side: body L05, top L70, bottom L63.
  • Pull piping from any fabric on any chart, 150+ options, to match or contrast.
  • Leave off the non-slip bottom if the cushion should flip.
  • Send the exact size of the space; piping sits on the seams and doesn't change the size.

Cushion piping runs around both the top and bottom edges, so one bench cushion can carry two welt colors and change its look with a flip.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Is the piping only on the top of the cushion, or top and bottom?

    The workshop's answer

Both. It runs all the way around the top and bottom edges, and both faces use the same fabric, so you can flip the cushion.

  2. A common question

Could each side have its own piping color so I can flip it for a new look?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Four linen-look cushions in L05, about 90 in (2.3 m) long and 3 in thick, were made with L70 piping on one side and L63 on the other, so the look changes when they're turned over.

  3. A common question

Where can I find your piping color chart?

    The workshop's answer

There isn't a separate one. Piping can be made from any fabric on any of the shop's charts, over 150 options across fabric types. Use the body's code to match, or another code to contrast.

  4. A common question

Can the piping be a different fabric from the cushion, like velvet on linen?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. A linen body with velvet piping works; write both codes separately. The shop advises against pairing outdoor fabric with indoor velvet piping.

Questions buyers ask next

Is a piped cushion still reversible with a non-slip bottom?

Not fully. The non-slip fabric becomes the underside, so the cushion sits one way up only. For a cushion you can flip any time, leave the non-slip bottom off and keep both faces in the same fabric.

Do corduroy cushions get piping on both edges?

Corduroy daybed covers and sofa pieces are made without piping by design, because the ribs already define the shape. Corduroy box cushions have been piped on request, and velvet and other fabrics can be piped as usual.

Does piping make the cushion bigger than my measurements?

No. Piping sits on the seams and doesn't change the size. Send the exact size of the space without deducting anything; any fitting allowance is handled in production.
