A yellow and sky-blue striped window seat cushion, and how its cotton feels, wears and cleans

A page from Rosa's notebook on a cabana-striped box cushion between honey-oak bookcases: the hand of the cloth, where it takes wear, and when to trade it for something tougher.

Bold cabana stripes wake up a honey-oak library nook; running them front to back makes the seat look deeper than it is.

The quick answer

A striped cotton window seat cushion suits an indoor library nook: it feels crisp and dry, and its lines show whether the stripes were matched down the front band. For daily family wear, the workshop's own easy-clean pick is its soft-touch poly-cotton; for a covered porch, regular fabric works under a roof, but choose water-repellent outdoor fabric wherever rain can reach.

What a cotton stripe feels like under a book and a blanket

A cotton stripe is the most honest cloth in my notebook. It tells you where it was cut, how it was pieced, and whether anybody cared.

Look at this one. The yellow and sky-blue stripes run front to back across the seat and keep going straight down the front band, so every line meets the piping without a jog. That takes planning at the cutting table, and it makes the seat look deeper than it is. The self piping is cut from the same stripe, which keeps the edge crisp without inviting a third color to an already lively party.

Now the hand. The workshop's striped fabrics are 100% cotton, and cotton feels dry and cool when you first sit down, with a matte face that keeps the stripes clean in daylight. There is no pile to crush the way velvet does, so an afternoon of reading leaves no seat mark.

The cleaning question is where I get honest. If this seat is where the children eat crackers every day, the workshop's own recommendation for durable, easy-to-clean daily wear is its soft-touch poly-cotton, one of its best sellers. Save the cotton stripe for a room that is more library than lunch counter. Direction and matching are covered in the stripe direction Pattern, and more cloth lives in striped cotton and ticking.

How much brown is already in your room? Here it is nearly everything. Honey-oak bookcases on both sides frame the seat like a bed in an alcove. A cognac leather club chair keeps the corner warm, which is what lets a yellow and blue stripe look confident instead of loud. A red and navy rug repeats the cool stripe at floor level, and the garden window's green balances the two bright colors. That much wood is why the stripe can be bold and the seat can go without pillows. More seats like this one wait among the reading nook cushions and window seat cushions. Pull up a chair.

Pinned by Rosa in the library

Five pins, from the pattern-matched front band to the garden window that balances all that yellow and blue.

  1. Pattern-matched front band

The stripes on top run front to back and carry straight down the boxing band, so each line meets the piping without a jog.

  2. Leather club chair

Cognac leather keeps the corner brown and warm, which is what lets a yellow and blue stripe look confident rather than loud.

  3. Persian rug

The rug's navy repeats the cool stripe at floor level and stops the blue from feeling isolated.

  4. Oak bookcase

Honey oak on both sides frames the seat like a bed in an alcove.

  5. Garden window

Green outside balances the two primary colors of the cushion.

Hand notes before you choose a stripe

  • Ask for the stripes to run front to back and continue down the front band, so they meet the piping without a jog.
  • Pick self piping cut from the stripe when the stripe already has two strong colors.
  • Choose cotton for a reading nook; choose the soft-touch poly-cotton if spills are a daily event.
  • For a kids' playroom, the workshop has also suggested its thick teddy fabric.
  • Skip narrow notches around a middle board; run the cushion straight past the recess instead.
A real project

Two cream cushions for a covered porch, and the question of rain

A buyer got in touch about two cream cushions for a covered outdoor seating area, one 67 x 9 7/8 in (170 x 25 cm) and one 86 5/8 x 28 3/8 in (220 x 72 cm).

The workshop told them the truth: the standard fabric works fine under a roof, but it is not waterproof. Unless they needed rain protection, it recommended the soft fabric, and it sent the water-repellent outdoor chart anyway so they could compare. They chose a water-repellent cream. Later they asked to copy some existing chair covers with eyelets and buttons, and that one couldn't be made that way.

My grandmother kept her good cushions on the porch from Easter to the first cold snap, and she never once trusted a roof to keep sideways rain off them. Regular fabric under cover, outdoor fabric wherever rain can reach. The covered porch Pattern goes further.

Buyer questions: tough cloth, a narrow notch and a curved back

  1. A common question

I need a tough fabric that's easy to clean for everyday use, and I don't want velvet. What would you pick?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop recommends its soft-touch fabric, a poly-cotton that is one of its best sellers and is durable and easy to clean. For a kids' playroom it has also suggested its thick teddy fabric.

  2. A common question

My bench has a thin board in the middle with a narrow recess. Can the cushion be cut to fit around it?

    The workshop's answer

Not reliably. A notch that narrow can't be sewn and still hold its shape. The workshop suggests running the cushion straight past the recess, as in its example template, and filling your measurements into that guide.

  3. A common question

Could you make one arched, curved back cushion for my banquette?

    The workshop's answer

A single curved back piece is very tricky, because even a small measuring error causes fitting problems. A wedge-style back cushion, wider at the bottom, is a model the workshop makes often, and it gives excellent back support; send your dimensions and fabric for a quote.

Regular cushion fabric is fine under a porch roof, but if rain can reach the seat, order water-repellent outdoor fabric and stop hoping.

Questions buyers ask next

Should cabana stripes run front to back or side to side on a seat?

In this photo they run front to back and continue down the front band, so each line meets the piping without breaking. On a long seat that direction also makes the cushion look deeper than it really is.

Are the striped cushion fabrics natural fiber?

Yes. The workshop's striped fabrics are 100% cotton, which gives them a dry, matte hand. If you need something tougher for daily family use, its soft-touch poly-cotton is the durable, easy-clean suggestion.

Should a bold striped window seat get throw pillows?

In a room that is mostly wood, one high-contrast stripe can carry the seat alone. This oak library leaves pillows off entirely and lets the cognac chair and the red and navy rug do the supporting work.

How thick should a window seat cushion look against its base?

Here the cushion is about a third of the height of the oak base, thick enough to read as upholstery rather than a thin pad. Check your own seat height before choosing, so knees and feet still land comfortably.
