A knotted stripe window seat cushion, boxed so the whole front becomes a band of pattern

Folks ask about the top of a cushion. The good questions are about the edge. Here are three of those, then a white paneled window seat that answers most of them.

The quick answer

A window seat cushion with a box edge turns its side panel into a band of fabric across the whole window, which is why a patterned stripe looks best boxed rather than knife-edged. Paint the base in the stripe's lightest color, let plain pillows pick up its mid-tones, and choose foam firm enough to hold a mug level.

Three questions about edges, backs and thickness

  1. A common question

Could you make my cushion in a custom stripe, using your forest green as one of the colors?

    The workshop's answer

No. The workshop is not a fabric producer, so it customizes size and thickness, not the fabric design. It offered to source a matching printed fabric if the buyer had a reference, and the buyer chose two catalog colors instead: 923 forest green and 920 mustard.

  2. A common question

Can I buy just a backrest, or just the round bolsters?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, both are sold separately. Two 4 in (10 cm) thick backrests were made at 7 x 63.75 in and 7 x 56 in, and a zippered backrest is possible as long as it isn't tufted.

  3. A common question

Can you make a cushion 6 in thick?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. 6 in (15 cm) is a special size. For a 6 x 23 x 8 in cushion, pick the 12-16 in thickness/width option and the 20-25 in length option, then write the exact dimensions in the personalization note.

Now, the reading

Look at the front of the seat, not the top

Folks ask me about the top of a cushion all day long. The good questions are about the edge, and this window seat answers most of them.

Look at the front, not the top. The cushion runs the full width of the recess, and its box edge turns the side panel into one band of knotted stripe from wall to wall: cream, black, gray and taupe, woven in little knots, sitting right above a white paneled base. With a knife edge, that band would disappear into a seam. Boxed, it's the whole show. That's why a patterned stripe from the striped cotton and ticking family wants a box.

The base is painted the lightest color in the stripe, so the pattern stays on the seat and doesn't spill onto the woodwork. The pillows play the same game: three linen and gray at the left, two cream linen at the right, each picking a calm color out of the stripe and leaving the black to the cushion.

Then there's the mug. It sits level on the cushion beside an open paperback, which tells you the foam is firm enough to use as a ledge. In a reading nook, that's worth more than softness. Linen sheers filter the gray daylight so the black knots stay gentle instead of stark, and bare pine floorboards keep the room honest.

So, neighbor, what's the lightest color in your stripe? Paint the base that, and read box edge versus knife edge before you choose.

Five pins across a paneled reading nook

Five pins, from the knotted boxing to the linen sheer, each showing how the edge carries the pattern.

  2. Pillow trio

Cream, gray and oatmeal pillows pick out the three calmest colors in the stripe.

  3. Book and mug

A cup resting level on the cushion shows the foam is firm enough to use as a ledge.

  4. Paneled seat base

A white base in the lightest color of the stripe keeps the pattern on the seat alone.

  5. Linen sheer

Filtered light keeps the black knots soft rather than stark.

One test set before the whole room

Before she committed to a whole room, a buyer in the US ordered one test set: a seat 59.8 x 31.9 in (152 x 81 cm), a backrest 22 x 31.9 in (56 x 81 cm) across the short end, and two cylinder armrests, all in velvet color 11.

The workshop explained the numbers. Seat and backrest are both 4 in (10 cm) thick. Bolsters are 8 in (20 cm) in diameter and normally as long as the cushion is deep, which would have made hers 27.6 in (70 cm). She shortened them to 23.6 in (60 cm), because a full-length backrest would join the set later and the bolsters had to fit that final layout.

She asked for two things before it shipped: straight seams, and photos. I liked her already. A test set is a small order that answers big questions.

The lesson: Size bolsters for the final layout, not just the first piece.

Questions buyers ask next

Does a patterned window seat cushion need a box edge?

It shows the pattern best. A box edge gives the cushion a flat side panel, so a stripe runs across the whole front of the seat. A knife edge tapers to a seam, and the pattern disappears at the sides.

How firm should a reading nook window seat cushion be?

Firm enough to hold a mug level, as on this paneled seat. Soft foam dips under a cup or a book, while firm foam gives a flat ledge you can sit on for a chapter and rest things on between.

What color pillows go with a black and cream stripe?

Plain ones in the stripe's calmest colors. Here cream, gray and oatmeal linen pillows sit at each end, picking out the quieter lines and leaving the black knots to the cushion alone.

How thick are window seat backrests and bolsters?

In one past order, seat and backrest were both 4 in (10 cm) thick and the cylinder bolsters 8 in (20 cm) across. Bolster length usually follows the cushion's depth, but it can be shortened for a planned layout.
