Periwinkle stripes from above: what a window seat borrows from the porch

A straight-down view of a periwinkle stripe, matched from the top to the side band. It set me thinking about everything a porch cushion teaches an indoor one.

From above, the stripes line up across the top and down the gusset, with self piping carried round the corner.

The quick answer

A striped window seat cushion should borrow the porch's best ideas, the stripe, a washable cover and a wipe-first habit, and keep the indoor ones: a soft hand, pattern-matched edges and a measured fit. On this periwinkle and cream cushion, the stripes carry from the top down the gusset and into the self piping.

From porch awning to reading nook

Stripes came indoors from the porch. Every awning and every glider cushion on my grandmother's porch wore one, and a striped window seat cushion still carries a little of that outdoor air into a room. This close-up shows what happens when you bring the stripe in and then tailor it like a parlor piece.

The camera looks straight down on a periwinkle and cream stripe. Follow a blue band across the top and you'll see it roll over the edge and carry on down the gusset, the side band, without a jog. The self piping is cut from the same stripe and turns the corner without breaking the rhythm. That is pattern matching. It takes more fabric, and it is the first thing the eye notices, so ask for it whenever you order stripes.

The room keeps its voice low: a white built-in base, a cream woven rug, a glazed blue vase and the corner of a blue abstract painting that repeats the periwinkle higher up. No pillow hides the seams, a confident choice for a close-up; this cushion has nothing to apologize for.

So what should an indoor seat borrow from outside? The stripe, the washable cover, the habit of blotting first and fussing later. What should it keep from inside? The soft hand, the matched edges, a fit measured to the seat. More seats are in window seat cushions, the stripe family is striped cotton and ticking, and odd shapes start with a paper template for a custom cushion.

A striped window seat cushion looks tailored when the stripes carry from the top down the gusset and into the piping; it takes more fabric, and the eye sees it first.

  3. Matched gusset

Blue bands on the top carry on down the front face.

  4. Blue glazed vase

A single vase in the same blue repeats the stripe color higher up.

  5. White built-in base

A plain white base lets the striped box edge be the only line in the frame.

Forest green, and the stripe nobody could weave

A buyer in the US had a clear picture of a reading nook: a forest green window seat cushion with thin vintage stripes of cream and camel woven right in. A lovely idea, and one I have heard on plenty of porches.

The workshop was honest about it: it does not weave fabrics. It customizes size and thickness, and it can source an existing print, but a stripe invented from scratch is outside a cushion maker's scope. So the buyer turned to the catalog linens and chose forest green 923 with mustard 920, keeping the spirit of the stripe as a two-color pairing.

The size, 78.75 x 15.5 in (200 x 39 cm) at 3 in (7.5 cm) thick, was not a standard option. The buyer picked the closest size on the listing and typed the exact measurements in the personalization box. That is the way to order an odd size, neighbor, and it works.

Buyer questions: uneven old windows, wipe-clean cloth and a melted cover

  1. A common question

Our old house has an uneven window seat, 31 3/4 in (81 cm) at the narrowest point and 34 1/4 in (87 cm) at the widest, with trim in the way. Which width do I give you?

    The workshop's answer

Send a rough sketch with all the measurements, both of those widths included, and mention any trim or wood that sticks out, because it can throw the numbers off. The workshop pauses production until the shape is confirmed. Sometimes leaving a small gap is the simplest fix.

  2. A common question

Do you have faux leather, or any fabric I can simply wipe down?

    The workshop's answer

The velvet wipes clean easily, and every fabric on the listing machine washes at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. Faux leather is available too, for a little more; ask to see those fabrics.

  3. A common question

My linen cover arrived wrinkled from packing. Is it safe to iron?

    The workshop's answer

Carefully. The linen range is a linen-look synthetic, not natural linen, and one buyer's cover melted the instant a hot iron touched it. Iron only at a properly lowered temperature, or use steam for compression creases; that buyer was offered a replacement cover at a reduced price.

Questions buyers ask next

What should I ask for when I order a striped cushion?

Ask for pattern-matched edges, so the stripes carry from the top panel down the side band, and for piping cut from the same stripe. It uses more fabric, but it is what makes a striped seat look tailored rather than bought.

Can a cushion workshop weave a custom stripe for me?

This one does not. It customizes size, shape and thickness, sews from existing fabrics and can sometimes source an existing print. A stripe designed from scratch needs a mill, so pick the nearest stripe or a two-color pairing.

How do I keep an indoor window seat cushion easy to clean?

Borrow from porch cushions: a removable cover you can wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle, and a blot-first habit for spills. Velvet also wipes clean easily if you want something plush.
