A pink striped star floor cushion, read in every season
A letter from the bench about a raspberry and candy-pink star under a lit canopy, and what a year of weather asks of a child's corner.
SaveThe quick answer
A striped cotton star floor cushion works in a kids' room all year if you change what sits around it, not the pouf itself. Keep it out of hard summer sun, set it on a rug for cold winter floors, and turn a new point to the room each spring. Stars are made about 35 in (90 cm) or 50 in (127 cm) across the points.
High Point ·
My friend,
A letter about a pink star, written in March
Stand in front of a star floor cushion, not above it, and it will tell you the truth about its seat.
That is why I kept this photograph on my bench, my friend. It is taken straight on, the way a small child sees it walking into the room. You can read the height of the box wall, and you can watch the raspberry and candy-pink bands run level around every point. That tells me the wall strip was cut as one long piece and walked around all ten sides. A seam is a promise, and on a star you keep it ten times.
People ask me what a corner like this does over a year. The pouf does not change. The weather around it does, and so should the things you put beside it.
Pinned by Harlan
Five pins, from the striped box wall to the heart prints that carry the pink up the wall.

- Striped box wall
Even horizontal bands around each point show the wall strip was cut as one long piece.
- Open seat top
Pillows sit at the back so the full top is free for sitting.
- Gray star pillow
A cool neutral to calm two strong pinks.
- Heart prints
Pink hearts in the frames carry the pouf color up the wall.
- Lit sheer canopy
The glow behind makes the pouf read as a lit stage.

Summer sun, winter floors, and the months between
Summer. Striped cotton sits cool under bare legs, which is why I like it in a child's room. Keep the star out of the hottest square of window light, though. Strong color is the first thing a July sun takes, and the notes on fading in the sun explain why. Where does the sun land in your child's room at noon?
Fall. School starts, the picture books come down from the floating shelves, and the star goes back to being a reading seat. The gray star pillow and the cream cloud sit at the back, so the whole top stays free to sit on.
Winter. Floors run cold. The rainbow rug under this star is doing honest work, keeping the pouf off bare boards. The fairy-light canopy comes on before supper, the sheer glows, and the pink turns warm, like a small lit stage.
Spring. Carry the star out to a dry porch on a breezy day, brush the stripes and turn it so a different point faces the room. Five points share the wear better than one.
The props earn their place in every season. The gray star is a cool neutral that calms two strong pinks. The framed heart prints carry the pink up the wall, so the pouf is not the only pink thing in the room. The potted plant and the wooden toys on the shelves keep it a child's room and not a showroom. More stars live in the star pouf atlas, and the rest of the room in kids' room cushions.
Cushions stacked into a nursery window bench
A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop with a plan I admired. She wanted a low bench under her nursery window, built by stacking floor cushions the way modular seating stacks, and she asked how tall each cushion was so she could count how many to pile up.
The shop said yes, it could make them. It also pointed out that the cushions she had in mind were foam-filled, and offered foam for hers. That was the right call. Fiber fill rounds off at the edges and slides when you stack it. A foam insert keeps each block square, and square blocks stay where you put them. Her fabric was linen, and the floor cushion thickness guide is where I would start counting.

Old upholsterers will tell you the real cutting happens in the conversation, long before the shears come out. Tell the workshop what you sit on, and they will talk it through with you. — Harlan

Buyer questions: smaller sofas, a missed sale, a fair question
- A common question
Can a floor sofa be made narrower or shorter than the standard size?
The workshop's answerYes. Order from the standard listing and write your sizes in the order note. A 64-inch version, 79 x 64 in (201 x 163 cm) overall, was offered at the same price, and a 39 x 68 in (99 x 173 cm) version was made with its backrests scaled down to match.
- A common question
The sale ended an hour before I checked out. Is the sale price gone for good?
The workshop's answerNot always. The shop has reactivated an expired sale so a buyer could still pay the sale price, and when someone had already paid the full price, it refunded the difference.
- A common question
Is this the designer teddy sofa or a copy, and why is the price so different from look-alikes?
The workshop's answerIt is the workshop's own version, made in sizes close to the well-known teddy sofa, with high-density foam and a corduroy it has tested. Much cheaper look-alikes often use thin fabric, low-density foam and hard solid-foam backrests.
Judge a star floor cushion from the front, not from above: the front view shows the seat height and whether the stripes run level around the box wall.

Questions buyers ask next
How big is a star floor cushion?
Stars are measured across the points, not along one edge. The usual sizes are about 35 in (90 cm) and 50 in (127 cm). Tape the width on the floor first and leave room to walk past the tips.
Will a striped cotton star fade in a sunny kids' room?
Strong colors lose depth in direct sun over time, and cotton is no exception. Keep the star out of the brightest patch of summer window light, or turn it each season so no single point takes all the sun.
Why do the stripes line up all the way around the star?
The box wall is cut as one long strip and sewn around all ten sides, so the bands run level from point to point. Piping cut from the same stripe keeps the top outline crisp.
Can floor cushions be stacked to make a bench?
Yes, if they have foam cores. Fiber-filled cushions round off at the edges and slide when stacked, while foam keeps each block square so the stack stays put. Ask for the height of each cushion before you count how many you need.
Sit well. — Harlan
