A maroon and periwinkle star pouf, and every prop around it

Safari wallpaper, a fairy-lit canopy, a rug full of elephants, and one striped star on the floor keeping its head. I wrote this one as a letter, because props deserve a proper explanation.

The quick answer

In a kids' room with a themed wallpaper, choose a star floor cushion in a plain two-color stripe or a solid, and let the walls tell the story. Here a maroon and periwinkle stripe picks up the blue-gray elephant on the rug, a mustard star pillow repeats the giraffes, and white cube shelves frame the canopy on both sides.

High Point ·

My friend,

A letter from the bench about one striped star

The star on this floor is the quietest thing in the room, and that is why it works.

Look at the walls before you look at the cushion. Safari animals run from the baseboard up. A white canopy hangs with fairy lights. The rug carries an elephant and a giraffe. That is a whole story told before anybody sits down, so the star floor cushion wears a plain awning stripe in two colors and nothing more.

The maroon does the anchoring. A pale star would float on that light floor; the dark stripe sits it down. The periwinkle does the talking, and it talks back to the blue-gray elephant on the rug.

The edge is boxed, and the self piping is cut from the same stripe, so the five points read as one clean outline in the warm evening light. A contrast welt would draw every point twice. This room has lines enough.

A seam is a promise, and a star makes ten of them, one at every point and one in every valley between. Those are the places I check first when a star comes off my bench.

If you want to copy the corner, start at the walls. Take one color from the paper and one from the rug, put them in a stripe from the striped cotton and ticking family, and stop there. More ideas live under kids' room cushions. What story do your child's walls already tell?

Pinned by Harlan: five marks in the safari corner

Five pins walk the corner, from the awning-stripe star and the mustard pillow to the wallpaper, the elephant rug and the toy trucks on the shelves.

  1. Awning-stripe star

A simple two-color stripe reads calmly next to a busy wallpaper.

  2. Mustard star pillow

Mustard repeats the giraffes on the wallpaper and rug.

  3. Safari wallpaper

When the walls tell a story, keep the floor cushion simple.

  4. Elephant rug

The gray-blue elephant echoes the periwinkle stripe.

  5. Toy dump truck

Bright toys sit on white shelves either side, framing the canopy.

Why each prop earned its place

  • Mustard star pillow: it repeats the giraffes on the wallpaper and the rug, and gives the maroon a warm partner.
  • Cream square pillow: a plain square rests the eye between two shapes that both have points.
  • White canopy with fairy lights: it makes a small room inside the room, and the star becomes its floor.
  • Cloud wall lamp: soft bedtime light kept up on the wall, so the floor stays clear for play.
  • White cube shelves with black bins: they stand on both sides of the canopy like a pair of bookends and give the toys a home at night.
  • Dump truck, garbage truck and red ride-on car: the real residents. They show the corner gets played in, not just looked at.
  • Safari rug: its blue-gray elephant is where the periwinkle came from.
A real project

Four rolls, two boxes, and one roll that never came

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop in the middle of a move. Their corner floor sofa set, in green and brick corduroy, had shipped as four roll packs and two boxes. Three rolls and the boxes reached the door. The fourth roll, holding a brick long cushion, the corner cushion and a pillow cover, had been lost by the carrier.

The workshop sent the missing roll again. Then came a second snag: four days after unrolling, three of the long foams were still flat in the middle. The workshop sent three new foams.

I tell every family the same thing now. Count the parcels the day they arrive, and open them promptly. A problem you find on day one is a quick phone call; a problem you find a month later is a mystery. Our Pattern on the first days after unrolling covers what normal looks like.

Buyer questions: shade, fiber and one spare bar

  1. A common question

The brick on my cover looks lighter than the photo, and the base looks darker than the arms. Did I get the wrong color?

    The workshop's answer

Corduroy and velvet have a sheen, so the same fabric looks lighter or darker depending on the light and the angle you see it from. When a buyer's photos still showed a clear difference between pieces, the production team sent new covers for the floor cushions.

  2. A common question

One metal bar in my floor sofa frame is damaged. Can I buy just that one?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, a single bar can be ordered. The shipping built into the price is the same for one bar or two, though, so the standard set of two is usually the better value. The bars come in standard sizes only and can't be customized.

  3. A common question

Is the floor sofa fabric velvet or corduroy, and is there any hemp in it?

    The workshop's answer

It is polyester corduroy. Furniture corduroy isn't made in cotton, and the fabric contains no hemp.

Questions buyers ask next

Should a star floor cushion match the wallpaper in a themed kids' room?

Echo it rather than match it. Pull one color from the rug or the walls into a simple stripe or a solid, and keep pattern off the floor cushion. A busy star against a busy wall makes the corner hard to read.

What size star pouf suits a canopy corner in a child's room?

Stars in the workshop's orders have been made at 35 in (90 cm) and 50 in (127 cm). Measure the floor inside the canopy's footprint and leave clear floor around the points so small feet don't catch on them.

Why put a star-shaped pillow on top of a star floor cushion?

The pillow repeats the shape at a smaller scale and brings in a second color. Here mustard ties the maroon and periwinkle star to the giraffes on the wallpaper and rug without adding another pattern.
