An awning-stripe star floor cushion, and how to order one right the first time

Blue and marigold stripes on five points, under a canopy of fairy lights. A good star starts with a code, a swatch and a well-timed message.

Beside a changing dresser, a blue and mustard striped star makes a corner that will grow with the child.

The quick answer

To order a star floor cushion right the first time, give its size as the width across the points, write the fabric code and any piping code in the order note, and order swatches first if the color matters. Time the order so the star arrives close to when it is needed, because foam left vacuum-packed for weeks can be damaged.

The star, cut across two points

Cross-section through the depth, drawn for 6 in (15 cm) on 35½ in, to proportion.1. Striped cotton cover: A woven awning stripe in cornflower blue and marigold. Indoor cloth, zippered so it comes off for washing.; 2. Self piping: A cord covered in the same stripe, sewn into the top and bottom seams. It outlines every point against the carpet.; 3. Side band: The strip between top and bottom panels. It sets the height, and it is what a child leans on at each point.; 4. Foam filling: Cut to the star and packed firmly out to each tip. It travels vacuum-packed: open it within days, never weeks.; 5. Zipper: Set into a seam so the cover can come off.; 6. Base panel: The underside that rests on the carpet, cut to the same star.1Striped cotton cover3Side band2Self piping5Zipper6Base panel4Foam filling6 in15 cm35½ in deep · 90 cm

A star floor cushion beside the changing table

Pulled back, this photograph tells you more than the star does, my friend. The chest of drawers wears a changing mat, so this corner is planned to grow from nursery to reading nook.

The star is broad and low, with a tall box side that gives a child something to lean on at every point. Blue and marigold stripes cross the top, and piping cut from the same stripe outlines each point against the beige carpet. A seam is a promise, and a star has ten corners to keep it.

A cream cloud pillow and a navy star pillow sit at the center. Polka-dot curtains keep the pattern mix soft, a rattan mirror warms the white furniture, and the fairy-lit canopy makes a room within the room. See more star floor cushions and kids' room cushions.

Four lines that get a star floor cushion right the first time

  1. Give the size across the points

Stars are sized by their overall width, tip to tip. Quoted sizes have run about 35 1/2 in (90 cm) and 50 in (127 cm).

  2. Write codes, not color names

Put the fabric code and the piping code in the order note. Production waits for the code: the foam can be cut and ready, but the cover isn't sewn until the code arrives.

  3. Swatch first, or ask for a finished photo

A swatch in your own daylight settles a color better than any screen, and each one is roughly palm-sized, about 4 x 4 to 6 x 6 in. The workshop can also send close-ups and a finished-cushion photo of the same combination.

  4. Time it to the day you need it

Foam left vacuum-packed for more than 2 to 3 weeks can be damaged, so order closer to the birthday instead of storing the box. Open it within days.

A real project

A sample first, then a message that left nothing to guess

A buyer wanted a floor sofa in a color from the original designer brand's range, one the workshop did not offer. First came a fabric sample, to hold the workshop's brick against the designer's rust in their own light. Then a clear message: two corner backrests, two bottom cushions and the metal rods, no covers, to wear the designer's covers.

The workshop confirmed the cushion sizes matched before cutting anything, and held the sale price until the buyer had moved. A sample and a clear message did the work before anyone cut a thing.

The lesson: Inserts and covers can come from different makers only if the dimensions truly match; confirm depth before ordering.

Buyer questions about parcels, promo codes and full sets

  1. A common question

Tracking says delivered, but only part of my floor sofa is here. Is the rest coming?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. A single floor sofa ships as two roll packs with the cushions plus one small box with the metal bars, and they don't always arrive together. The rest usually comes the same day or within a couple of days.

  2. A common question

Is there ever a discount or a promo code?

    The workshop's answer

Often. The workshop has offered promo codes, a special price on a single sofa, larger discounts on big orders during promotions, and bundle prices for a sofa with a pouf. Ask before you check out.

  3. A common question

Does the floor sofa price include the back and arm cushions, or only the seat?

    The workshop's answer

The full set: a seat cushion, a backrest and two round armrest pillows, in the size and color you choose. The 16x32 option brings a 16x32 seat, a 16x32 backrest and two armrests.

Write the fabric code, not the color name, in a star floor cushion order. The foam can be cut and waiting, but the cover isn't sewn until the code arrives.

Questions buyers ask next

What size star floor cushion suits a nursery corner?

Stars are sized by the width across their points, about 35 1/2 in (90 cm) or 50 in (127 cm) in past orders. Leave room to walk past the tips.

Can a star floor cushion be made in an outdoor fabric?

Yes. Pick a code from the outdoor fabric chart and write it in the personalization notes when ordering, and the star is made in that fabric.

Can I change the fabric code after ordering a star?

Yes, as long as production hasn't started. Message the new fabric and piping codes, or a corrected size, and the order is updated. Extra pieces added after production starts go in a separate order.

Sit well. — Harlan
