The Cutting Table · a common question
Can I leave my cushion in its vacuum packaging until I need it?
Also asked as:Can I keep my couch in the box for a few months?I have to keep it in storage until April
A vacuum pack is for the trip, not the off-season. Here's how long foam can stay squeezed, what happens past that, and how to store it properly instead.
The quick answer
Foam should stay vacuum packed no longer than 2-3 weeks, so open cushions and floor sofas when they arrive. Foam opened within a few weeks re-expands fine, recovery is never promised past a month, and foam sealed for over a year has come out crumbly. To wait for a move or the holidays, unpack it, let it expand, then store it uncompressed.

- Foam compressed for over a year can come out crumbly and fail to recover.
- Long vacuum storage leaves heavy creases, especially in velvet.
- To store, unpack, let it expand, then store it uncompressed.
- For a gift or a later move, order closer to when it will be used.

The couch that waited a year and a half
One couch sat in its vacuum pack for a year and a half before anyone opened it. When they did, the foam came out damaged and crumbly. The foam cells had been squeezed too long, and it couldn't recover.
That's the far end of the scale. Most people aren't planning on eighteen months; they're thinking of April, or a move, or Christmas morning. The answer is the same, only gentler. Foam forgives a few weeks in the bag. It doesn't forgive a season.
Storing it until a move or the holidays
Open it on arrival
Cut the vacuum pack within a few days of delivery, even if the cushion is headed for a closet.
Give it 2-3 days
Foam regains its full shape in 2-3 days. Covers can look uneven for 24-48 hours, and some pieces take up to a week.
Measure once it has settled
Foam measures short straight out of the bag. Re-measure after 3-5 days before judging the size.
Store it uncompressed
Once it has expanded, pack it away without squeezing the air back out.
Or order later
If it's a gift or it's waiting for a new house, order closer to the day it will be used.
Why velvet minds the bag most
Every fabric creases in a vacuum pack. Velvet shows it most, friend: pressure marks on the pile are common right after packing, and a long stay makes the creases heavy. Corduroy can look matted for the same reason.
After a normal trip, the fix is patience. Lay the piece flat and uncovered for a few days, up to about 10, and brush by hand along the pile. The first 72 hours out of the vacuum pack and velvet cushion care cover it step by step, and a star pouf gets the same treatment as a sofa.
Foam can stay vacuum packed for 2-3 weeks at most. Past a month, recovery isn't promised; after a year, foam has come out crumbly.

Buyer questions
- A common question
Does it ship compressed, and can I keep it boxed until Christmas?
The workshop's answerIt ships vacuum-packed, so the box is much smaller than the cushion. Take it out within a few days of arrival, because long compression can damage the foam. If you'd keep it unopened until Christmas, order closer to when you'll use it.
- A common question
How long does a compressed cushion take to expand, and how long can it stay packed?
The workshop's answerAfter opening, about 2-3 days to regain its full shape. Covers can look uneven for 24-48 hours while the foam settles, and some pieces take up to a week. Don't leave anything compressed longer than 2-3 weeks; more than a month is never promised, and foam stored for over a year can come out crumbly.
- A common question
Can the sofa stay vacuum-packed in storage for a few months?
The workshop's answerNo. Cushions shouldn't stay compressed for long. Open the packs so they can expand; after that you can pack them away uncompressed.
- A common question
My velvet looks marked after the vacuum pack. Is it damaged?
The workshop's answerPressure marks on velvet and matted-looking corduroy are common right after vacuum packing. Lay the piece flat and uncovered for a few days, up to about 10, and brush by hand along the pile. If the marks stay, send photos; in past cases the workshop sent a replacement cover.
Questions buyers ask next
Is my whole order really inside that small box?
Yes. Cushion sets and sofas are vacuum-compressed, so everything fits in a surprisingly small parcel without extra stuffing. Open it promptly and allow about 36-48 hours to expand; large sofa orders can arrive as up to 5 separately tracked parcels.
Why does my cushion measure short right out of the bag?
Usually it's the vacuum packing. Foam measures short at first and keeps expanding for 3-5 days, sometimes up to a week. Re-measure after that. Still short? Send the workshop tape-measure photos of the length, width and thickness.
Can I use one cushion now and leave the other sealed?
Only briefly. One early reply allowed it, but the workshop's standing advice is 2-3 weeks at most in the pack. Open both, let them expand, and store the spare uncompressed.
