The Cutting Table · a question, worked through

How does the floor sofa ship? How many boxes, and does it need assembly?

Three parcels on the porch, and one of them rattles. That's the frame. The rest is foam holding its breath.

The quick answer

A standard floor sofa ships in 3 packages: one roll pack with the 2 backrests, one with the 2 seat foams, and a small box of metal frame bars. Corner sectionals come as 5 parcels and a sofa with a pouf chair as 6. There is no flat-pack assembly; the upholstered pieces arrive finished and expand once unrolled.

Do I have to build it?

No flat-pack, no bag of screws. The seats and backrests arrive finished, sewn and filled, just squeezed flat and rolled. Cut the wrap, unroll them on a clear floor and let the foam come back to shape.

The only loose parts are the metal bars that form the frame. They travel unassembled in their own small box, and the workshop can send a photo of the bar frame before you order if you want to see it. The support bars and assembly notes walk through how they go together, and the first 72 hours of a vacuum-packed cushion covers the unrolling.

Will all the boxes land the same day?

Maybe, maybe not. Every parcel leaves together, but the carrier sorts them like a squall sorts a fleet, and one can drift in a day behind the others. One delivery to a buyer in the US arrived 3-4 days after shipping.

So don't judge the sofa by the first box on the step. Count the parcels against the table above before deciding anything is missing. More layouts live under modular floor sofas.

While you wait: how wide is the narrowest doorway between your front step and that room, friend?

An open-corner floor sofa ships as 4 boxes of about 50 x 12 x 12 in and 22 lb each, plus a small box of bars. Every box fits a regular car.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Is the modular sofa vacuum sealed? How does it show up?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Cushions and backrests are vacuum-sealed in roll packs and expand to full shape after opening. The metal bars travel separately, the couch comes in 3 boxes, and the carrier may deliver them on different days.

  2. A common question

Is it flat-packed with assembly, or ready to use?

    The workshop's answer

The upholstered parts arrive finished and ready to use; the foam is vacuum-sealed for shipping and expands after unpacking. The frame is a set of metal bars, and the workshop can send a photo of them.

  3. A common question

How does a floor sofa get shipped, and how many boxes should I expect?

    The workshop's answer

Compressed, with the air taken out. A closed-corner sectional came as 4 big boxes plus 1 small box of metal bars, and it reached a buyer in the US 3-4 days after shipping.

  4. A common question

I only see a cover in the box. Where's the foam?

    The workshop's answer

Almost certainly inside it. Inserts are vacuum-compressed inside their covers, so a cushion can look like a flat cover. Open it and it expands within a few days. Every order is photographed before shipping, and the workshop investigates if foam is truly missing.

Questions buyers ask next

Will floor sofa rolls fit through a narrow door and up the stairs?

Yes. The rolls run about 12 x 12 x 45-50 in (30 x 30 x 110-120 cm), usually 2-3 rolls plus a small bar box. A 25 1/2 in (65 cm) doorway, narrow stairs and a regular car are all fine.

How long is it safe to keep a floor sofa in its roll pack?

Open it on arrival. Foam recovers fine within a few weeks, but don't keep it compressed past 2-3 weeks, and never more than a month. Foam sealed for over a year can crumble, so unpack it and store it uncompressed.

Does vacuum compression damage floor sofa foam in transit?

No. Short compression in transit doesn't hurt the foam; the pieces return to full shape once opened, and buyer review photos match the listing. It's done because shipping bulky foam at full size is very expensive.
