A Reading by HanaModular Floor Sofas & Teddy Couches
Anatomy of an espresso tufted floor sofa, and how its weave feels to live with
Hana takes a low corner sofa apart layer by layer: the linen-look cover, the tufts, the loose backs, the bolsters, and the frame that isn't there.
SaveThe quick answer
An espresso linen-look modular floor sofa has a matte, dry hand and a deep color that shows tufting as soft shadows, so the seat looks plumper than it would in light gray. In a bright corner the dark weave calms the glare. Loose backs and bolsters move freely, and single modules can be added later to change the layout.
The cushion, cut open
Cover fabric. A removable, zippered cover. Machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle and air dry.
Piping. A fabric-covered cord sewn into the seams. It sits on the seam line, so it does not change the size.
Fiber wrap. Polyester fiber (Dacron) batting around the foam: it fills the cover out and softens the edges.
Foam core. About 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-resilience foam, firm to medium-firm, cut to the ordered size.
Zipper. Along the back band, as hidden as possible. The zipper side faces down or toward the wall.
Base panel. The underside of the cover. A non-slip fabric backing can cover the whole of it instead.
The corner, from the floor up
A floor sofa is mostly air above it. In a small room, that is its gift.
This one is a modular floor sofa in espresso brown, set into a bright cream corner of a living room by a tall window. Tufted seat modules on a chunky jute rug. Four loose back cushions. Two round bolsters. No arms, no legs.
Height is a feeling. Here the seat stays low, and the corner stays low with it, because the modules butt together without a frame. The fiddle-leaf fig in its stone pot, the shelf of ceramic vases and books, the framed window-view print: each lifts the eye upward. The sofa does not have to.
Pinned by Hana: five points on the espresso corner
Five pins follow the sofa from the tufted seat and the corner joint to the fig by the window.

- Tufted seat module
Dark espresso shows the tufting as soft shadows rather than lines.
- Back cushion
Loose back cushions can be moved to turn the corner into a daybed.
- End bolster
A bolster closes the open end by the window.
- Corner joint
The modules butt together without a frame, so the corner stays low.
- Fiddle-leaf fig
Green leaves read richer next to the brown weave.

What the hand meets on a tufted espresso floor sofa
- Cover. A linen-look weave in espresso. Matte and a little dry under the palm, with a fine slub you feel more than see. It is not real linen; the note on real linen versus linen-look explains the difference.
- Tufts. On pale cloth, tufting draws lines. On espresso it draws shadows, so the seat reads softer and plumper.
- Seat modules. Tufted slabs set straight on the rug, joined at the corner without a frame.
- Back cushions. Loose. Pull two away and the corner becomes a daybed.
- Bolsters. One closes the open end by the window. An elbow rest, or a pillow.
The deep brown also works on the light. Strong daylight makes pale fabric glare. Espresso absorbs it, and the green leaves beside it read richer. The honest trade: pale lint shows more on dark cloth than on gray.
What color is the floor under your sofa? Start there.
Dark cloth, low seat, one tall leaf. The corner gets warmer. The room gets quieter.
Three frames built, the fourth missing
A buyer in the US was putting together a closed-corner teddy sofa. The photos showed four L-shaped frame sets. Only three could be built.
The buyer photographed the bars that had arrived. The workshop looked, saw what was missing, and sent the pieces. They came in 4 to 6 business days.
The lesson is quiet and practical. Lay out every frame piece and count the sets before you start. If a set is short, send a photo. The Pattern on floor sofa support bars walks through the count.
Buyer questions: a small gift, extra modules, one fabric
- A common question
My box had two small pillowcases in a color I didn't order. Was that a packing mistake?
The workshop's answerNo. The small pillowcases are a gift from the shop. If you'd like more in other colors, they can be bought at cost.
- A common question
Can I add pieces to my modular sofa and turn it into an open L?
The workshop's answerYes. Order through the modular sofa listing and write the request in Add Personalization: for example, two long base cushions and two straight back pieces in place of L-shaped backrests, in the same fabric as the sofa you have.
- A common question
Is the brick-colored teddy sofa velvet or corduroy? Does the fabric change with the color?
The workshop's answerBrick is corduroy, with ribs you can see. Every color of that teddy sofa is made in the same corduroy.

Questions buyers ask next
Does a dark brown floor sofa show lint more than a light one?
It shows pale lint and light pet hair more readily, while hiding darker everyday marks better. A quick pass with a lint roller keeps espresso looking tidy.
Why does tufting look softer on a dark fabric?
On pale cloth the tufts read as lines and dimples. On a deep color like espresso they read as shadows, so the surface looks rounder and plumper, even with the same foam underneath.
Can loose back cushions turn a floor sofa corner into a daybed?
Yes, when the backs are loose rather than fixed. Pull two away and the corner seat becomes a long lounging surface; put them back and it sits upright again. Bolsters at the open end help either way.
Does a low floor sofa make a small room look bigger?
Usually. With the seat close to the floor, more wall and window stay visible above it. Put height somewhere else, a tall plant or a shelf, so the eye still has a place to go.
