A light gray modular floor sofa set as a corner, read for the long hours

Hana reads two tufted modules, four back cushions and two bolsters for the time they will hold: a book, a laptop, an afternoon that runs long.

Two tufted floor modules, four back cushions and two bolsters make a frameless corner sofa.

The quick answer

A modular floor sofa suits long sitting when every piece stays loose and the modules stay put. Two tufted seat modules meet in the corner, back cushions lean on the wall, and bolsters act as soft arms. The open corner layout measures 118 x 79 in (300 x 200 cm). Set it on a rug and use the connector bars so the modules do not drift.

Notebook, page one: a corner built for the long hours

Two modules, one corner, no frame. The whole seat is loose parts.

From the doorway, the light gray modular floor sofa reads as one low L. Up close it comes apart: two deep tufted seat modules meeting at a right angle, four back cushions leaning on the wall, a round bolster at each open end. Nothing is sewn to anything.

For long sitting, that matters more than softness. You read for an hour, then shift. A back cushion comes forward behind a laptop. Another lies flat for a nap. A bolster moves under the knees. A fixed sofa decides your posture. A loose set lets you keep deciding.

The channel tufting is not ornament. A thick seat wants to crown in the middle. The tufting holds the top flat, so the surface stays even through a whole afternoon on the floor with a book. The weave is a linen-look cloth, matte and dry to the touch.

Pinned by Hana: five points on a frameless corner

Five pins, from the tufted seat module to the jute rug that holds the corner together.

Pinned: Light gray linen-look tufted floor sofa modules arranged as a corner with back cushions and bolsters on a jute rug
  1. Tufted seat module

Channel tufting keeps the thick seat from bulging and adds a quilted look.

  2. Corner joint

Two rectangular modules meet at right angles to form the corner.

  3. Loose back cushion

Back cushions lean on the wall, so no frame is needed.

  4. Round bolster

A bolster at each open end acts as a soft arm.

  5. Jute rug

A textured rug stops low modules from sliding apart.

Why dove gray, and why the fig stands tall

The window is tall and the light is morning light. Dove gray takes that light and returns some of it. A large, low piece stops reading as a shadow on the floor. A darker weave would have made the corner feel smaller.

Everything vertical in the frame is there on purpose. The fiddle-leaf fig in its stone pot. The wall shelf of ceramic vases and books. The seat sits at about 14 in (35 cm). Without something tall beside it, the room would seem to sink.

The framed window-view print answers the real window across the corner. The chunky jute rug does more than add texture. Low modules on smooth oak boards slide apart each time someone leans back. Rough fibers hold them.

Wide oak boards, warm, under cool gray. That is the palette. Leave a hand's width of floor between the set and the shelf, and the corner breathes. Other arrangements sit in the modular floor sofa layouts Pattern and among the modular floor sofas.

Low seat, tall plant. Loose backs, a rug beneath. The afternoon stays long.

A real project

A corner sectional that would not stay together

A buyer in the US ordered a closed-corner sectional in mustard corduroy, 118 x 79 in overall and 14 in high (300 x 200 x 35 cm), with seats of 79 x 39 x 6 3/4 in (200 x 100 x 17 cm). They asked for it to arrive after they had moved in.

It came vacuum packed: four large boxes and one small box of metal bars. On the bare floor of the new apartment, the pieces kept sliding apart. The workshop suggested a rug and extra connector bars. The rug helped a great deal.

Later, pet hair clung to the corduroy's ribs. The buyer ordered green faux leather covers for the corner set. A smooth face lets hair lift off instead of settling between the wales.

Two lines went into my notebook. A floor sofa belongs on a rug. The support bars go in, every time.

Three questions about size, loose pieces and length

  1. A common question

How big is the modular floor sofa, and is the ottoman one piece or two?

    The workshop's answer

The standard sofa is 39 x 79 in (100 x 200 cm); with the ottoman the set measures 79 x 79 in overall. The ottoman is 39 x 39 in: one foldable cushion that opens to 79 in (2 m), not two stacked pieces. The open corner layout is 118 x 79 in, and the straight backrest is 39 x 15 x 15 in (100 x 39 x 39 cm). On the corner model, the listed 14 in seat height is both cushions stacked.

  2. A common question

Are the seat, backrest and side pillows sewn together, or are they loose?

    The workshop's answer

Loose. Every piece is separate, so the backrest can lie flat and be used on its own, and the armrest bolsters lift away.

  3. A common question

Can the floor sofa be made longer, say 67 in (170 cm) or 96 in?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The workshop has made a 67 in (170 cm) single sofa and a 96 in sofa with one continuous seat cushion. When one buyer asked for about 90 in, the workshop suggested its existing 118 in size instead.

A modular floor sofa on bare oak boards drifts apart when people lean back; a jute rug and connector bars keep a 118 x 79 in corner together.

Questions buyers ask next

Is a tufted floor sofa comfortable enough for reading or laptop work for hours?

It can be, if the pieces stay loose. Loose backs and bolsters let you change position through the afternoon, and channel-tufted seats stay flat instead of crowning. A rug underneath keeps the modules together when you lean back.

Why do floor sofa modules creep apart on a wood floor?

Low, heavy modules on a smooth floor shift a little every time someone leans back. A textured rug grips them, and connector bars between the modules hold the joint. One buyer found the rug alone helped a great deal.

Can I change the fabric on a floor sofa later?

Yes, by ordering new covers for the same set. One buyer whose corduroy corner set collected pet hair ordered faux leather covers for it later, keeping the original foam.

How do I size a modular floor sofa for the corner of a room?

Measure both walls from the corner. Choose modules whose lengths add up to each wall and leave the open ends for bolsters. The open corner layout is 118 x 79 in (300 x 200 cm), and longer custom lengths have been made.
