One mid-gray tufted floor sofa module, firm below and soft behind

One module against a plaster wall. A seat, a back, a bolster. Firm where you sit, soft where you lean.

One module on its own becomes a deep floor chair for a reading or meditation corner.

The quick answer

A single modular floor sofa module works as a complete floor chair when the tufted seat is firm and the back cushion and bolster are soft. Tufting keeps the seat fill from drifting, while shredded-foam backs give a little. To seat more people, add modules: one 79 in (201 cm) sofa grew to 118 in (300 cm) with a 39 in (99 cm) ottoman.

Notebook: one module is already a chair

One module is a complete chair. Most people buy three before they learn that.

Here a single tufted module sits against a warm plaster wall. The seat is deep and square. A loose rectangular back cushion leans on the wall at an easy angle. A round bolster is tucked behind it on the left, where an elbow wants to rest.

That is the whole modular floor sofa, at its smallest. It works for reading. It works for sitting still.

The fabric is a mid-gray linen-look weave. It sits between the warm wall and the cream patterned rug, so it looks neither cold nor washed out. Sheer linen curtains soften the daylight. A floating oak ledge holds eucalyptus in a stone vase, the only color in the room. Three framed line-art prints hang above, and their thin black lines repeat the tufting grid below.

Height is a feeling. Here it is low, close to the floor, and calm.

Firm below, soft behind

A floor seat has no frame to hold you up. The foam does all of it.

So the seat must be the firm part. The tufts tie the top to the bottom at regular points, and the fill cannot drift to one end. The surface stays even after a long evening.

The back has a different job. It only has to receive you. On the workshop's floor sofas, back and arm cushions are filled with shredded foam rather than one rigid block, so they give a little and take the shape of your back.

Firm below, soft behind. Reverse it and you sink into the seat and bounce off the wall.

Where will you sit most, upright with a book or leaning back? Answer that before you choose. The foam firmness finder helps, and shredded foam versus wedge backs explains the back. More layouts live in the modular floor sofa atlas, and the weave belongs to the linen-look fabrics.

One module. One wall. Floor on both sides.

A real project

From 79 inches to 118

A buyer in the US liked a floor sofa of 78 to 79 in (198 to 201 cm). She needed about 117 in (297 cm) to seat three or four people.

The workshop did not stretch the sofa. It suggested an ottoman with a backrest, 39 in (99 cm) long, set beside it. Together they made 118 in (300 cm). An extra metal support was included.

Processing took 3 to 4 days. Delivery took 3 to 5. She ordered it in green corduroy.

A floor sofa grows by modules. One piece pulled past its maximum length is no longer the same seat. The modular floor sofa layouts show how pieces combine.

Three notes

  1. A common question

Is there a discount if I buy ten or more floor cushions, say for a meditation retreat?

    The workshop's answer

Often, yes. For ten 20 x 24 in (51 x 61 cm) cushions, the shop added an extra reduction on top of the listing price. For a meditation retreat it quoted 24 x 24 in (61 x 61 cm) and 24 x 40 in (61 x 102 cm) sizes in soft fabric, velvet or teddy, with shipping included in that quote, and eighteen 20 x 20 in (51 x 51 cm) party cushions were priced as one set.

  2. A common question

If I buy the regular floor sofa now, can I add pieces later to make an L or a corner?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. You pay the difference and the extra parts are sent. An extra metal bar with an L-backrest can be added, and an existing sofa can be completed into a corner sofa by adding mattresses, a corner cushion and a straight backrest.

  3. A common question

My tracking has shown the same 'in progress' status for days and the estimated date has passed. What is happening?

    The workshop's answer

Usually nothing is wrong. Parcels pass through processing on the way and move again once that status clears. If a parcel looks stuck, the shop contacts the carrier.

One modular floor sofa module is a complete chair: a firm tufted seat, a back cushion leaning on the wall, and a bolster for the elbow.

Questions buyers ask next

Can one floor sofa module be used on its own?

Yes. A single deep tufted module with a back cushion and a bolster works as a floor chair for reading or meditation. In a small apartment, start with one and add a second later to make a corner.

Why are floor sofa seats tufted?

Tufting ties the top of the cushion to the bottom at regular points, so the fill cannot drift to one end and the seat keeps an even surface. The grid also gives the module a quiet, regular pattern.

Is a floor sofa firm or soft?

Both, in different places. The seat carries your weight, so it is the firm part. Back and arm cushions are softer by design; on the workshop's floor sofas they are filled with shredded foam rather than one rigid block.

Does mid-gray look cold in a warm room?

Not when it sits between a warm plaster wall and a cream rug. Mid-gray takes a little warmth from both and keeps its calm. Add one living green, like eucalyptus, as the only color.
