A modular floor sofa seen from above, read as a floor plan

Cream velvet, mustard ends, a bolster at the middle. From above, a floor sofa is only rectangles. Rectangles are easy to measure.

The quick answer

Measure for a modular floor sofa by its footprint on the floor, not by seat height. On the workshop's floor sofas the seat thickness is standard, in 28 DNS high-density foam, and requests for 8 in or 10 in seats have been declined. A single sofa tops out at 79 in (200 cm), so tape that length on your floor first.

The photograph is already a plan

Seen from above, the sofa stops being furniture and becomes a drawing. One long base. Two backrests covering its full length. A bolster sitting at the midpoint of the base. Mustard end blocks that wrap all four sides of each base end.

That is what you measure. Not the look. The footprint.

  • The floor length you can give it, wall to wall or wall to doorway. One modular floor sofa tops out at 79 in (200 cm).
  • The depth, plus the space your legs need in front.
  • For a curved or odd space, a paper drawing with sizes and a photo taken from a distance.
  • For a quarter-round, only the two straight sides.

Seat height is not on the list. It is standard, and it does not change. Tape the outline on the floor. Leave a hand's width of floor at the walls. Walk around it for a day.

Five points on the plan

Five spots on the overhead photograph, from the olive branches to the rug.

Pinned: Overhead view of a cream velvet floor sofa with mustard ends and bolster, beside olive branches in a vase on a wooden stool
  1. Olive branch vase

Terracotta and olive give the mustard a sun-baked setting.

  2. Centered bolster

From above you can see the bolster sits at the midpoint of the base.

  3. Mustard base end

The overhead view shows the end blocks wrap all four sides of the base end.

  4. Plant in white pot

A plant at the open end balances the stool at the other.

  5. Shaggy rug

A deep-pile rug runs along the sofa to soften the floor level.

Mustard, clay, and a stool at the right height

The palette is sun and earth. Mustard velvet at the ends, cream along the seat, olive branches in a terracotta vase, a limewashed wall, a warm oak floor. It can be rebuilt with any ochre fabric and a clay pot.

The round wooden stool is the detail to copy. It works as a side table at floor-sofa height. A standard side table stands too tall for seating this low.

A plant in a white pot balances the stool at the open end. A shaggy wool rug runs along the front and softens the floor level.

If the low seat worries you, read is a floor sofa right for you before you tape anything. Where in your room would the stool go?

A real project

A torn zipper, a non-slip base, and a parcel sent astray

A buyer in the US found two faults on arrival. A hole at the zipper of one L-shaped pillow cover. Another in the anti-slip padding under a seat piece.

The workshop sent a free replacement L-cover and anti-slip cover. The parcel went to the wrong country by mistake. It was reshipped to the correct US address the next day.

The first day matters. Open every zipper. Turn each seat piece over and look at the base. Photograph what is wrong, and report it with the photos.

The lesson: Check zippers and the non-slip base on arrival, and report any fault with photos.

Buyer questions: curves, offers and seat thickness

  1. A common question

Our foyer curves along a stair railing. Can you make a floor cushion that fits a curved space?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Draw the shape on paper with the sizes marked, and send a photo of the space taken from a distance. For a quarter-round shape, the workshop needs the two straight sides to calculate the curve.

  2. A common question

Will there be a bigger Black Friday discount, or can I make an offer on the floor sofa?

    The workshop's answer

There was no deeper discount beyond the sale already running, but a buyer's offer a little under the sale price was accepted. The Make an Offer button works only with your currency set to US dollars and not in the phone app, so use a desktop browser.

  3. A common question

Can the floor sofa seat cushions be made thicker or thinner, like 8 or 10 inches?

    The workshop's answer

No. The teddy floor sofa's seat thickness cannot be customized; the seats are made at the standard thickness in 28 DNS high-density foam. Requests for 10 in (25 cm) seats, to reach a 20 in (51 cm) seat height, and for 8 in (21 cm) seats were both declined.

Questions buyers ask next

How much floor space does a modular floor sofa take?

Start from the footprint. A single floor sofa runs up to 79 in (200 cm) long. Tape that length and the depth on your floor, then add walking room around it and a little bare floor at the walls before you decide.

Can I order a thicker seat to raise a floor sofa?

Not on this design. The seat thickness is standard and cannot be changed, so a floor sofa stays low by nature. Plan side tables, lamps and the rug for that height, and choose it only if sitting close to the floor suits you.

What should I check the day a floor sofa arrives?

Open every zipper and turn each seat piece over to look at the non-slip base. If anything is torn or faulty, photograph it and report it right away with the photos, so a replacement part can be sent.
