A sage velvet modular floor sofa, and the ordinary days ahead of it

A floor sofa is judged on an ordinary Tuesday, not on delivery day. Sage velvet, a cream seat, one wooden stool. Here is where daily life will show first.

The quick answer

A sage and cream velvet modular floor sofa handles kids, pets and spills best when its covers come off for washing and the darker sage sits where hands and paws land. The standard sofa is 39.5 x 79 in (100 x 200 cm) and 13.5 in (34 cm) tall in two foam layers. Laid flat, the set makes a bed of about 79 x 79 in.

Six colors, read for wear

  • Cream velvet#E9E2D0Seat and backrest faces. Shows a spill first, so it belongs where eyes rest.
  • Sage green velvet#8F9E86Bolster face and backrest ends. Forgives handprints far better than cream.
  • Warm beige wall#D6C4A8Pulls the sage toward gray-green rather than mint.
  • Natural linen#DCD3C3The curtain. Filters the window without adding a color.
  • Raw oak#A9825AThe stool. A place for a cup that is not the seat.
  • Jute#B09870Under the front edge only, where feet land first.

Dark where hands go, light where eyes rest

The cream seat will show the first spill. The sage arm will hide the first paw print.

That is the daily-life test in two lines. The rest is placement.

Look at how this modular floor sofa is put together. A deep box-edge seat in cream. Backrests with cream faces and sage ends. One bolster at the arm that reverses them: a sage long face, a cream end. So the arm reads darker than the seat.

The arm is also where a hand rests, a child climbs over, a dog leans. Dark where the contact is. Light where the eye goes.

There is no piping. Seat and backrests read as soft blocks, which suits a room this bare.

The walls are warm beige. They pull the sage toward gray-green, away from mint. In the soft light through the linen curtain, the velvet pile shows its direction. Where hands have passed, the shade changes. Brush it one way and it reads even again.

Sun is the slower test. A floor sofa under a window takes light on the same faces every afternoon. Turn the backrests end for end each season so no single face takes all of it. The notes on sun fading are worth reading before you choose the spot.

The styling is almost nothing. A wooden stool with one white vase. A plant just entering at the window edge. A jute rug under the front edge only. Leave a hand's width of floor. The bare boards around the rug keep the sofa low and light, and every prop moves in a minute when the room becomes a bed.

What will your floor sofa carry on an ordinary day?

Low seat. Dark where hands go. Light where eyes rest.

  3. Sage backrest side

Beige walls pull the sage toward gray-green rather than mint.

  4. Linen curtain

A natural linen curtain softens the window without adding color.

  5. Jute rug

The rug runs only under the front edge, leaving the floor visible.

A real project

Guests for weeks, and a bed on the floor

A household that hosts guests for weeks at a time wrote to the workshop with two questions. Is a floor sofa good to sleep on? And what is the foam density?

The shop answered plainly. The set lays out into a king-size bed of about 79 x 79 in (200 x 200 cm). The foam is cold foam at 28 kg/m³, about 1.75 lb/ft³. The corduroy covers go in the washing machine.

A family of four looked at the corner version with the ottoman instead. Laid flat, it makes a bed bigger than a king.

When a sofa will also be a regular bed, ask for the density as a number. The floor sofa bed guide covers the rest.

Sizes
39 x 79 in as a sofa; 79 x 79 in as a bed

The lesson: Ask for foam density in kg/m³ when a sofa will double as a regular bed.

Floor sofa questions, answered short

  1. A common question

The floor sofa listing vanished from the page. Is it sold out, and is my order still coming?

    The workshop's answer

Neither. The listing was paused for about 10 days while a new, higher-quality version was prepared, then it came back. Orders already placed were still shipped, and the shop sent custom order links to anyone who wanted to buy in the meantime.

  2. A common question

Can I order just the seat cushion, without the backrest and the armrests?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, and the seat alone costs less than the full set. Buyers have ordered a 4 x 4 ft seat on its own, and a 79 x 35.5 in (200 x 90 cm) seat without back and bolsters. Ask for a link with and without the extras to compare.

  3. A common question

What are the measurements of the modular floor sofa and each of its pieces?

    The workshop's answer

    The standard sofa is 39.5 x 79 x 13.5 in (100 x 200 x 34 cm), built from two seat layers of 6.5 in (17 cm). Each L-shaped backrest is 39 x 39 x 15 in (100 x 100 x 39 cm), a straight backrest is 39 in long, and the L-shaped corner sofa is 79 x 118 in overall.

On a two-color floor sofa, the cream seat shows the first spill and the sage arm hides the first paw print. Put the dark color where hands land.

Questions buyers ask next

Will the cream seat of a sage and cream floor sofa show marks quickly?

Sooner than the sage will. That is why this set keeps sage on the bolster arm, where hands rest, and cream on the seat and backrest faces. If the seat takes daily snacks and paws, ask for the colors reversed: a sage seat with cream accents.

How firm should a floor sofa be if guests will sleep on it for weeks?

The floor sofa in this story used cold foam at 28 kg/m³, about 1.75 lb/ft³, and the workshop confirmed it for sleeping. Laid flat it makes a bed of about 79 x 79 in. If guests stay long, ask for the density in writing before ordering.

Where should a velvet floor sofa go in a sunny living room?

Away from the strongest afternoon window if you can. Where you cannot, turn the backrests and bolster every few months so each face shares the light. A sheer linen curtain, like the one in this photo, softens direct sun without changing the room's color.
