A modular floor sofa, stacked to armchair height

Three bases, one on another. The height changes, and so does the room.

The quick answer

A modular floor sofa sets its seat height by stacking: one base is a floor cushion, two make a low couch, and three reach armchair height, as in this cream velvet set. Keep backrests and bolsters in proportion to the stack, lay a bolster on top at each side as an arm, and give compressed foam a few days to recover.

Three layers, one armchair

Three cream velvet bases, stacked. That is the whole idea of this modular floor sofa.

One base is a floor cushion. Two make a low couch. Three reach armchair height. Height is a feeling, and the room changes with each layer. Low seating keeps a room open. Stacked seating makes it feel furnished.

The proportion holds because the arms and backs grow with the stack. A bolster laid on top at each side becomes a real armrest. At the left, two rust backrests are doubled up. Nothing is symmetrical. It still reads as calm, because every piece shares one cream body.

The color sits on the ends only. Navy, pine green and rust, deep and earthy, layered like a rolled striped rug. Without them the stack would be a pile. With them it looks built.

The room stays quiet around it. A chunky oatmeal rug lets the three deep colors stand out. A leafy plant on the window sill repeats the pine layer, and a potted plant beside the sofa softens the corner. The wooden window frame and warm daylight keep the velvet from turning cold.

More layouts live under modular floor sofas. The velvet swatches show the end colors in daylight.

By day, a sofa. At a sleepover, beds. The same three layers.

Pinned by Hana: five points on the floor sofa stack

Setting floor sofa proportions, base by base

  1. Choose the seat height

Stack bases until the height feels right, then count them. The seat height calculator helps before you order.

  2. Choose thickness and firmness

Both are made to order, base by base. A thicker base means fewer layers to reach the same height.

  3. Match the backs to the stack

Backrests and bolster pillows should read as part of the seat. Here the rust backs are doubled for height.

  4. Finish the ends

Lay a bolster on top at each side as an arm. Turn the colored ends toward the room.

A real project

Four packages and one flat armrest

A couple in the US ordered a modular sofa. It arrived in four packages. One armrest looked flat. The shop advised a few more days for the foam to recover. For the backrest, that was all it needed.

One box had been damaged, and an L-shaped metal bar was missing. The shop sent the bar by FedEx.

Later they came back for a single straight backrest. When one insert lining began pilling within a year, the shop replaced it for the cost of shipping.

The lesson is patience. Compressed foam needs a few days before you judge its shape. The first 72 hours of a vacuum-packed cushion explains why, and modular floor sofa layouts shows other arrangements.

Buyer questions: a longer couch, a fabric change, a firm cotton seat

  1. A common question

Can the tufted floor couch be made longer so two people fit, and what comes with it?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. You choose any seat size, and a matching backrest and round armrest bolsters are sent to fit. The backrest is about 15 in (40 cm) high along the seat, and the seat is about 4 in (10 cm) thick. Extra lumbar pillows can be added, priced by size.

  2. A common question

I wanted corduroy, not velvet. Can I get a replacement cover or a whole new cushion?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. In one case the shop quoted a replacement cover, or a cover with new foam, and covered the difference itself. It also noted that differences of about 1/4 in (6 mm) are within handmade tolerance and could recur.

  3. A common question

Can I get a floor cushion 18 in deep, 40 in long and 5 in thick, firm, in cotton?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Custom sizes, thickness and firm fill in cotton are made to order through a custom purchase link. That one would measure 18 x 40 x 5 in (46 x 102 x 13 cm).

Stack floor cushions to change a room: one base is a floor seat, two a low couch, three an armchair-height seat with bolsters for arms.

Questions buyers ask next

How do I bring a floor sofa up to armchair height?

Stack the bases. Three layers reach armchair height in this living room, and a bolster laid on top at each side becomes the arm. Check the result with a seat height tool before ordering.

Why give a cream floor sofa colored ends?

They give a soft stack structure. Navy, pine and rust ends read like a folded striped rug, while the shared cream body keeps a loose, asymmetrical layout calm.

Can stacked floor sofa bases double as beds?

Yes. Unstacked, the bases lie flat as floor beds for a sleepover, then go back into a sofa by day. Deep velvet colors keep the look grown-up rather than toy-like.
