The Cutting Table · a checklist answer
How long does a vacuum-packed floor sofa take to expand after unboxing?
Also asked as:How long should we let it inflate before sitting? It doesn't look as plush. Maybe it needs to breathe?
Out of the box it looks like a tent packed in the rain: flat, creased, a fraction of the photo. Give it air and two days before you judge it.
SaveThe quick answer
A vacuum-packed floor sofa takes about 36-48 hours to reach its photographed shape: most pieces fill out in 24-36 hours, and full firmness takes 3-5 days, occasionally up to a week. Unwrap every piece, shake the cushions by hand, and sit on it while it recovers. If a piece is still flat after another 4-5 days, send photos to the workshop; lagging pieces have been sent a replacement insert.

The unboxing log, hour by hour
- Hour 0: unwrap every piece, seats and backrests alike. Leave nothing sealed in its plastic.
- Shake each cushion by hand to break the vacuum's hold on the foam.
- Sit on it if you like. Using the sofa while it expands is fine.
- Hours 24-36: most pieces have filled out.
- Hours 36-48: the sofa should look like the photographs.
- Days 3-5: full firmness, occasionally up to a week.
- Corduroy covers: crease lines from the packing need about a week to fade.
- Still flat after another 4-5 days: photograph the piece and message the workshop.
Day-one sights that aren't defects
- Pieces that look flat, folded or smaller than the photos when the plastic comes off.
- Backrests that feel soft instead of firm in the first hours.
- Crease lines across corduroy straight out of the bag.
- A cushion that measures short before day 3.
Why the foam needs its two days
Vacuum packing squeezes the air out of the foam so a whole sofa travels as rolls about 12 x 12 x 45-50 in (30 x 30 x 110-120 cm), usually 2-3 of them plus a small box for the bars. The foam has to draw that air back in, and it does it on its own schedule. Rain doesn't negotiate. Foam does, if you give it two days.
The workshop hears it often, friend: buyers worry at first sight of the compressed pieces. That's normal. Unwrap them all at once, shake them, and let the room do the rest. The vacuum-packed cushion Pattern tracks the first 72 hours, and the glossary explains vacuum packing and foam recovery.
When one piece lags behind the rest
Take its cover off and shake, pull and pinch the foam, then give it a few more days. If one section is still flat, dented or hard while the rest has recovered, send photos. In past cases the workshop shipped replacement foam or a replacement seat insert, and the buyer moved the cover onto it.
More on how the sets go together lives in the modular floor sofa atlas and the floor sofa buying Pattern. Which piece of yours is taking its time?
Flat, folded and smaller than the photos is how a vacuum-packed floor sofa arrives; give the foam 36-48 hours before judging it.

Buyer questions
- A common question
My floor sofa cushions arrived flat and folded. Did I get the wrong product?
The workshop's answerNo. The cushions are foam-filled, vacuumed and sealed for shipping. Once opened they spring back, which takes about 36-48 hours in total. Open one package and watch it.
- A common question
The cushions came flat. How long before they're back in shape?
The workshop's answerUsually 2-3 days, and up to 4-5 days to fully recover, because the foam is compressed for shipping. If a piece is still flat after that, photograph it and send the photos to the workshop.
- A common question
My sofa arrived flat and not very plush. When will it be fully expanded?
The workshop's answerGive it 36-48 hours to expand and at least 3-5 days to be fully inflated, sometimes up to a week. Crease lines on corduroy from the vacuum packing need about a week to fade.
- A common question
Can we sit on the sofa while the cushions are still expanding?
The workshop's answerYes. Unwrap all of them and allow 24-36 hours to fill out, or 36-48 hours to recover completely. You can sit on them while they expand.
- A common question
Is there anything I can do to help the foam recover?
The workshop's answerShake the cushions. Allow roughly 24-48 hours after opening. If a seat cushion still hasn't reached full shape after another 4-5 days, send photos to the workshop; one buyer in that spot was sent a replacement seat insert.
Questions buyers ask next
Will the floor sofa boxes fit through a narrow doorway?
Yes. The sofa arrives as vacuum-compressed rolls about 12 x 12 x 45-50 in (30 x 30 x 110-120 cm), usually 2-3 rolls plus a small bar box. A 25.5 in (65 cm) doorway, narrow stairs and a regular car are all fine.
Only some of my packages have shown up. Is the rest lost?
Probably not. Big orders ship as several separately tracked parcels that often arrive on different days, and bars, armrests or backrests can travel on their own. Check every tracking number; if a piece is truly missing, message the workshop with the tracking numbers you have.
My cushion measures shorter than I ordered. Could it be the packing?
Usually, yes. Foam measures short straight out of the bag and keeps expanding for 3-5 days, up to a week. Re-measure after that. If it's still short, send the workshop photos with a tape measure in them.
