Measuring a leaf-print star floor cushion for a tight nursery corner
Harlan reads a fern-print star set between a changing dresser and a window, and explains why tape on the floor matters more than the number on the order.
The same fern-print star seen wide, fitted between the changing dresser and the window so both stay easy to use.
The quick answer
To size a star floor cushion, tape its widest point-to-point span on the floor where it will sit, then open every nearby drawer and close the curtains to check clearance. Filled cushions spread a little past their ordered size, so leave some floor showing on every side instead of fitting the star snug against furniture.
Five points and one small corner
A star has five points, and every one of them wants the same floor you do.
This one is a fern-print cotton star floor cushion in a beige nursery, set between a white changing dresser and a window hung with dotted sheers. Fairy lights drape from a canopy above it. It looks easy. It was planned.
Look where the points land. One clears the drawer fronts. Another stops short of the curtain fall. The canopy sheer drops just behind the pouf, so the corner feels framed without losing the window. The box edge and self piping give every point a clean line, so from the doorway you read a star and not a soft heap.
The color keeps its voice low: white ground, sky blue and leaf green against beige walls, all in plain daylight. A trailing pothos above repeats the printed ferns below. A round rattan mirror answers the pointed canopy and the pointed star with one soft circle. The dotted sheers mean the print is not the only pattern in the room, so nothing feels like a costume. Shelves holding a rainbow stacker and a toy ukulele, and a woven basket on the floor, tell you who the corner belongs to. The canvas sits in the cotton and ticking family, and more shapes wait among the star poufs.
A pouf beside a changing station has a job, my friend. It is where an older brother or sister waits a turn.
What stands next to the spot you have in mind: a dresser, a crib, a door that swings in?
Pinned by Harlan
Five pins, from the star's points to the dotted sheers that share its corner.

- Leaf-print star pouf
Sized so its points clear both the dresser and the curtain line.
- Changing mat
A pouf next to the changing station doubles as a spot for an older sibling to wait.
- Rattan mirror
Round rattan balances the pointed canopy and the pointed star.
- Trailing plant
Real green above repeats the printed ferns below.
- Dotted sheers
Light, patterned curtains keep the print from being the only pattern in the room.

Measuring a star before it is sewn
Tape the whole star on the floor
Lay out the full star in painter's tape at its widest point-to-point size, right where it will sit. One line across the floor tells you nothing about the other four points.
Open every drawer that faces it
Pull each drawer all the way out. If a drawer front meets a taped point, move the star or choose a smaller one.
Let the curtains fall
Close the sheers the way you would at bedtime. A point lying under a curtain hem gets stepped on and gathers dust.
Leave floor showing for the fill
A filled cushion crowns and spreads past its ordered size, so keep a little floor visible on every side. The Pattern on custom cushion size tolerance explains the allowance, and the glossary covers crowning.
Twelve inches thick and bigger than the order
A buyer in the US, a furniture maker building custom couch frames, ordered very large cushions 12 in (30 cm) thick to serve as sofa seats. The request was plain: firm, not bean-bag style. The workshop promised they would be firm and heavy, because they are densely filled. Four were made in a light gray linen, two at 96 x 40 in (244 x 102 cm) and two at 96 x 28 in (244 x 71 cm), with 7 to 9 days of production and 3 to 5 days of shipping.
Then the maker put a tape on them and found them bigger than ordered. The workshop explained that fluffy, stuffed cushions spread beyond their nominal size. Nobody cut wrong. The fill did what fill does.
A seam is a promise, and so is a measurement. If a frame, a nook or a nursery corner is built around a filled cushion, tell whoever builds it to allow for crown and spread. The same holds for a star on the floor.
- Sizes
- 2 x 96 x 40 x 12 in (244 x 102 x 30 cm); 2 x 96 x 28 x 12 in (244 x 71 x 30 cm)
The lesson: When a frame is built around stuffed cushions, allow for crown and spread beyond the nominal size.
Buyer questions: sizes, photos and parcels
- A common question
Only part of my floor sofa showed up. Is there another box on the way?
The workshop's answerYes. A floor sofa ships in several parcels, for example three rolls and one box. The arms and metal support bars often arrive first and the seat cushions a day or two later, even when everything left together. Each parcel can be tracked on its own.
- A common question
What does the teddy floor sofa measure when it's fully laid out?
The workshop's answerThe standard teddy sofa is 79 x 39 in (200 x 100 cm), a twin-size footprint, and about 14 in (35 cm) high overall. It has two seat cushions of 78 x 39 x 6.5 in (200 x 100 x 17 cm), two L-shaped backrest pillows of 39 x 39 x 15 in (100 x 100 x 39 cm) and four metal support bars.
- A common question
Which size is the floor sofa shown in your photos?
The workshop's answerMost listing photos show the 28 x 56 in (70 x 140 cm) size, so pick that option for the same look. In the two-piece photos the seat is larger than the backrest, but both can be made the same size, and any custom size is possible.

Questions buyers ask next
How do I know what size star pouf fits a corner?
Tape the star's widest point-to-point span on the floor where it will sit. If the drawers still open fully and the curtains fall clear, the size works. If any point touches furniture, go smaller or shift the spot.
Why is a filled floor cushion larger than the size I ordered?
Filled cushions crown in the middle and spread at the edges once they relax. A set of 12 in (30 cm) thick seat cushions measured bigger than ordered for exactly this reason, so allow a margin wherever a cushion meets a frame or wall.
Is a star floor cushion a good seat next to a changing table?
It makes a low perch for an older sibling or a quick sit for a parent, as long as its points clear the drawer fronts and leave standing room in front of the changing mat.
Sit well. — Harlan
