A Reading by HarlanStar Poufs & Giant Star Floor Cushions

A striped star floor cushion from above: a corner set for company

Children gather where the floor invites them. From up here you can see why this corner does: five points, a clear front and nothing underfoot to trip on.

The quick answer

A star floor cushion suits gatherings because its points give several children a place to sit or lean from different sides. Tuck the two rear points into the wall angle, face the front point into the room, and keep rugs beside it rather than under it. Measure the diagonal of your corner, not just the walls, before choosing a size.

Pinned by Harlan: five marks seen from the ceiling

Five pins read the corner from above: the star's footprint, its front point, the low floating shelves, the rainbow rug and the pink balloons.

The numbers match the pins on the plate.

What the bird's-eye view tells a tailor

Laid flat on a cutting table, every cushion is a floor plan. I have looked down at cushions for more than fifty years, and this photograph lets you see a star floor cushion the way I do.

Look at the footprint. The two rear points tuck into the wall angle and the front point faces the room. That frees the baseboard on both walls and leaves the one point that meets foot traffic out in the open, clear of the rug. The stripe, raspberry red and candy pink with cream and beige, runs across the star, and the self piping keeps all five points inside one outline.

The round rainbow rug sits beside the star, not under it. Two shapes, both cheerful, each with room of its own. Low floating shelves hold books, plush toys and a woven basket within reach of a child sitting on the pouf. A cream cloud pillow and a gray star pillow give small backs something to lean on, the fairy-light canopy makes a room inside the room, and pink balloons repeat the stripe up at the ceiling.

The stripe itself comes from the cotton and ticking fabrics, and there is more for small rooms under kids' room cushions.

Setting the corner for a crowd of small guests

  • Five points mean five sides to sit from, so nobody has to fight over the one good spot.
  • Keep the front point clear. It is the one that meets running feet.
  • Spare pillows are spare seats. A cloud pillow and a star pillow can move to wherever the next child lands.
  • Books go on low shelves, within arm's reach of a seated child.
  • Let the foam finish rising before the party. A vacuum-packed seat needs time to reach its full height.
A real project

A seat that sat low, and the layer that raised it

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop that their floor sofa sat too low: 11 1/2 to 12 in (29 to 30 cm) of seat height against the 14 in (36 cm) they expected, even after 48 hours of expansion. The chrome support bars had also arrived rusty and wobbly.

The workshop sent new bars and offered an extra foam layer. The buyer chose an 8 in (20 cm) mattress to pair with the existing 6 in (15 cm) one, plus a matching layer for the ottoman so the two pieces still lined up. The custom pieces took 7 to 9 days to make. Once everything had fully expanded, the seat sat right and the case was closed.

Floor seating for company has to suit everyone who sits on it, my friend, the tall uncle as well as the toddler. If a vacuum-packed seat stays low after full recovery, a layer is the honest fix. The floor sofa height Pattern covers the options.

Buyer questions: a pet bed, a long floor cushion, washable covers

  1. A common question

How big is the pet bed that came with my order, and could I get a second one?

    The workshop's answer

The gift pet bed comes in one standard size for everyone, so it may be small for a 44 lb (20 kg) dog. The workshop makes the beds itself and offered a second one, with the buyer covering shipping. The small pillowcases included as a gift come empty, without inserts.

  2. A common question

Do you make floor cushions in long custom sizes, like 16 x 115 in (41 x 292 cm)?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The workshop makes custom lengths and either adds the size as an option on the listing or sends a custom order link. One 16 x 84 in (41 x 213 cm) linen floor cushion was made that way, with shipping included in the price.

  3. A common question

Can the covers come off for washing?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Every cover is removable and can go in the washing machine at 86°F (30°C).

Tuck a star floor cushion's two rear points into the wall angle and face the front point into the room; the baseboard stays free on both walls.

Questions buyers ask next

Why does a star pouf work well for playdates and parties?

Its points give children several sides to sit or lean from, so there is no single best seat to squabble over. Keep the front point clear of rugs and traffic, and add loose pillows as overflow seats around it.

Should a rug go under a star floor cushion?

Not in a corner like this one. A round rug placed beside the star keeps the pointed and round shapes distinct and leaves the front point free. A rug underneath would crowd the points and blur the two shapes together.

Why plan a floor cushion corner from above?

An overhead view shows the footprint: where the points meet the walls, how much floor stays clear and whether a rug overlaps. Sketch your corner the same way, from above, before you choose a size.
