The tip of a pink striped star floor cushion, and why its corners tell the truth

A letter about one star point: a box edge, a piping line in stripes, and the inside corner where a hurried hand always shows.

The quick answer

A star floor cushion holds its points best with a box edge and self piping, because the side wall lets the stripes turn each point and the piping keeps it crisp. Check the inner corners before ordering: top stripes, wall stripes and piping must meet there without a jog. A basket-weave canvas stands up to kneeling and play.

High Point ·

My friend,

A letter about one inch of a star

I am writing about one inch of a star. Not the whole pouf, only the tip and the little valley beside it, because that is where a cushion tells you who made it.

Look at the inner corner first, where two points meet. Three things arrive at that spot together: the stripes of the top panel, the stripes of the side wall, and the piping. If the cutter hurried, the stripes jog there, a half step out of line, and once you see it you can't unsee it. Here they meet clean. A seam is a promise, and this one was kept.

Now the edge. This star has a box edge, a wall of fabric standing between top and bottom. On a star, that wall is what lets the stripes turn each point and carry on down the side. A knife edge, two panels sewn flat together, makes a thinner, pillowy star with soft points. For a child to sit on, kneel on and shove across the carpet, I want the wall. There is more on box edge versus knife edge.

The piping is covered in the same striped canvas. From a step back it reads as a fine dashed line of raspberry and candy pink tracing every point. A contrast cord would draw the star twice. Self piping draws it once and lets the stripes talk.

Look close at the cloth. You can see the basket weave, over and under, like the seat of an old porch rocker. That weave is how you know the canvas can take kneeling and rough play. The top stripes run straight to the seam without wandering off grain, which is what a patient cutter gives you. The beige carpet underneath is plain on purpose; put a busy rug under stripes and the eye has nowhere to rest.

So here is my one request. Before you order any striped floor piece, ask your maker for a close-up of an inner corner. What will your star sit on, carpet or bare boards?

More stars wait in the star pouf atlas and among kids' room cushions. The cloth belongs to the striped cotton and ticking family.

  1. Inner corner join

Top stripes, wall stripes and piping meet cleanly here, the hardest spot to sew.

  2. Striped piping

Piping covered in the same stripe reads as a fine dashed line along the seam.

  3. Canvas weave

A visible basket weave means a sturdy cloth that copes with kneeling and play.

  4. Top panel stripes

Stripes run straight to the seam without wandering off grain.

A real project

Forty-two and a half inches inside a play tent

A parent in the US wrote to the workshop about a round play tent. They needed a white floor cushion to fill it, 42.5 in (108 cm) across, and asked what depth to choose.

The listing stopped at 40 x 40 in (101.5 x 101.5 cm). So the shop updated it, the buyer chose the 40 x 40 in option, and the cushion was made at 42.5 in. White was offered three ways: linen, soft fabric or velvet.

Round, square or star, the old rule holds. Measure the inside diameter of the tent at floor level, where the cushion will actually lie, and order to that exact figure. Not the outside of the tent, not partway up the wall. There's a whole family of these in play tent and crash pad cushions.

Buyer questions: stairs, firmness and how a floor couch is quoted

  1. A common question

I live in a fifth-floor walk-up. Will the courier bring a floor sofa to my door, and can I pick the delivery day?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. UPS brings it to your door, walk-up included, and you can call UPS to schedule. Delivery can be made without a signature. Add a phone number to the order so the courier can reach you; if a FedEx delivery misses you, call them with the tracking number.

  2. A common question

How firm are the floor sofa cushions? Do they sink or keep their shape?

    The workshop's answer

They keep their shape. The cushions use medium-hard, high-density foam meant to last for years. It is average firmness, not very hard, and it softens a little with use.

  3. A common question

What goes into the price of a full custom floor couch with a backrest and armrests?

    The workshop's answer

Size, fabric and the parts you choose. Past sets ranged from a 30 x 30 in (76 x 76 cm) velvet set to a 42 x 70 in (107 x 178 cm) velvet couch with a backrest and armrests. Send your size and the parts you want for an exact quote.

Questions buyers ask next

Which edge keeps the points of a star cushion crisp?

A box edge. The side wall between the top and bottom panels holds each point's shape and lets stripes wrap around it. A knife edge, with the two panels sewn straight together, gives a thinner star with softer, rounder points.

Can a floor cushion be made to an in-between size like 42.5 inches?

Yes. When one parent needed a 42.5 in (108 cm) round cushion for a play tent, the listing was updated so they could choose the 40 x 40 in option, and the cushion was made to 42.5 in.

Why do stripes sometimes jump at a cushion corner?

When panels are cut without matching the pattern, the stripes on the top and the side meet a little out of line. On a star, the inner corners are the hardest spot, so a close-up photo of one before ordering tells you a lot.

Sit well. — Harlan
