A cream ticking-stripe star floor cushion, read from the doorway and from the rug

Harlan writes a letter about a pale star pouf in a sunny nursery, and about which details carry across a room and which reward only the ones who kneel down.

A fine beige ticking stripe gives a cream star pouf a tailored look and hides small marks better than a plain.

The quick answer

A fine ticking stripe is the right choice for a pale star floor cushion in a nursery: from across the room it reads as calm cream, and up close its narrow beige lines hide small marks better than a plain. Keep the stripe running level around the box wall so the star looks full, and let pillows and toys carry the brighter color.

High Point ·

My friend,

A letter about one star seen from two distances

Stand in the nursery doorway and this star floor cushion is a pale shape on a pale floor. Kneel beside it and it becomes a fine beige ticking stripe, drawn line by line. A good cushion has to work at both distances, and most only work at one.

From ten feet away the stripe is gone. What you see is the outline: five points, a box wall of even height, soft cream against warm yellow walls. That silhouette is what a room remembers. If the points sag or the wall bulges, no fabric will save it.

Come closer and the ticking takes over. The narrow lines give the cream a tailored, farmhouse air, and they forgive. A small smudge on plain cream is a spot; on a stripe it is one more line. In a room where somebody is learning to crawl, that counts.

Now look at the wall of the star. The stripes circle it at one steady height, the detail that works at both distances. Up close it tells you the cutting was careful. From the door it makes the star look level and well filled. The self piping, cut from the same ticking, keeps the outline quiet.

Every prop keeps that calm. The gray cloud pillow bridges the stripe and the white canopy. The blue star pillow cools the yellow walls. The ring stacker holds the only bright primaries, low on the floor where small hands find it. A pencil sketch of a polar bear repeats the fine line of the ticking, and the bookcase, tiger plush and rocket poster fill the edges without claiming the middle.

Set the wide yellow and powder blue bands in the gallery beside it. Those stripes call out from the doorway; the ticking speaks softly. Both are honest. How far is your doorway from the spot where the cushion will sit?

More shapes wait among the star poufs, cloth on the striped cotton and ticking shelf, and ideas in kids' room cushions. The note on stripe direction deserves a slow read.

Pinned by Harlan: stripe, pillows and stacker

The pins go from the fine stripe on the box wall to the pillows that cool the yellow and the one spot of bright primary color.

A real project

The velvet floor set that had to fit 77.5 inches

A buyer in the US wanted the full French-style floor set: a base mattress, a backrest and two bolsters, in rust velvet number 17. The nook was 77.5 in (197 cm) long, and our standard 25 x 73 in (64 x 185 cm) base felt too narrow for the way they sat.

They chose a wider 30 x 73 in (76 x 185 cm) base, with the standard backrest at 16 in (41 cm) tall and 4 in (10 cm) thick, and marked length and width on a photo of the nook so nobody could turn the set sideways.

With only 77.5 in to work in, the shop promised to stay close to 73 in and to take responsibility if it came out long. It arrived in two parcels, and the buyer loved it. Leave at least 2 in (5 cm) for handmade tolerance.

Buyer questions: growing, refabricking and recoloring floor seats

  1. A common question

Can I add ottoman pieces later to make a floor sofa bigger, or turn it into an L?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Modules are sold separately. The ottoman is 39 x 39 in (99 x 99 cm), 13.5 in (34 cm) high, and comes filled. Add one with a corner backrest and a straight sofa becomes an L. The workshop suggests buying the base first and adding pieces as you go.

  2. A common question

Does the floor sofa have to be corduroy, or can it come in another fabric?

    The workshop's answer

Corduroy comes in a fixed set of colors, but the sofa can also be made in standard velvet, purple shades included, in plain fabrics, or in a washable white canvas.

  3. A common question

I'm after sage, moss or a new gray in corduroy. Is that possible?

    The workshop's answer

The standard corduroy green is water green. A moss green exists, though that cloth is a little stiffer than the usual corduroy. Other greens come in velvet or linen. For a new gray not yet photographed, the buyer picked any color and wrote the request in the order notes.

A fine ticking stripe reads as plain cream from ten feet away, yet up close its narrow lines hide the small marks a solid cream would show.

Questions buyers ask next

Which way should the stripes run on the side wall of a star pouf?

Around it, at one steady height. Running the stripe level around the box wall keeps the lines parallel to the floor, which is why this star looks even and well filled from any side of the room.

Is a pale floor cushion a poor idea for a nursery?

Not if the pale has something in it. A fine beige ticking on cream keeps the calm of a plain but lets small marks read as part of the pattern. Plain cream shows every spill; a narrow stripe forgives a few.

How do wide stripes differ from ticking on a floor pouf?

Scale. Wide yellow and powder blue bands read clearly from the doorway and make the pouf the loudest thing in the room. Fine ticking melts into a soft tone at a distance and shows its lines only up close.

Why pair blue and gray pillows with yellow nursery walls?

Yellow walls run warm. A powder blue star pillow cools them, and a gray cloud pillow sits between the beige stripe and the white canopy, so the corner stays gentle instead of sunny all over.

Sit well. — Harlan
