Is the floor sofa, and its covers, velvet or corduroy?

Also asked as:Is this the velvet fabric or the corduroy? The description says velvet. Which is it?

Under a soft lamp, fine ribs can pass for pile. Step closer to the brick sofa and the ribs show plainly: this is corduroy.

The quick answer

The floor sofa is corduroy: the teddy floor sofa, the pouf sofa, the ottoman and the replacement covers all use the same ribbed corduroy in every color, brick included, so the pieces match. Listing descriptions that said velvet were corrected. If you want velvet, the sofa can be made in it as a separate option.

How the word velvet crept into the listing

Corduroy and velvet are cousins. Both carry a pile, and in a soft photograph the ribs of a corduroy wale melt into something that looks like velvet. The eye sits down first, and sometimes it sits down on the wrong word.

That is what happened here. Some listing descriptions said velvet, and they were corrected. Even the workshop's own replies once wandered, velvet first, then cotton, before settling on corduroy. So here it is plainly, my friends: the sofa and every piece around it are ribbed corduroy, and velvet is a separate order.

For matching pieces, see floor sofa replacement covers and the modular floor sofas shelf. Which color are you circling: the brick, or something quieter?

Every color of the teddy floor sofa is the same ribbed corduroy, brick included; velvet is a separate option, not the standard.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Is the brick floor sofa velvet or corduroy? Does the fabric change with the color?

    The workshop's answer

Brick is corduroy, with visible ribs. Every color of the teddy sofa uses the same corduroy fabric.

  2. A common question

Are the replacement sofa covers corduroy or velvet?

    The workshop's answer

Corduroy, the same fabric as the sofa. A covers listing that said velvet was corrected after a buyer asked.

  3. A common question

What fiber is the pouf fabric? Is it natural or polyester?

    The workshop's answer

It is corduroy, like the sofa. In one conversation the replies first said velvet, then cotton, before settling on corduroy, so ask for the fabric by name if the fiber matters to you.

  4. A common question

Which fabric cleans up easiest with kids and pets?

    The workshop's answer

Indoors, soft fabric: durable, smooth, doesn't collect dust and wipes clean. Velvet is also easy to clean and pet-friendly. Covers wash at 86°F (30°C).

Questions buyers ask next

Can I get the floor sofa in velvet instead?

Yes, as a separate option. Corduroy is the standard fabric in every color; velvet is made on request, so mention it when you ask for a quote rather than picking a corduroy color from the chart.

Is the ottoman corduroy too?

Yes. The ottoman and the pouf sofa use the same corduroy as the floor sofa, so a set bought together reads as one fabric in one color.

Will new covers match a floor sofa I bought earlier?

The fabric will: replacement covers are the same ribbed corduroy as the sofa. A color cut months apart can differ by a shade between dye lots, so ask for covers from the same lot when you can.
