Teal velvet dining chair cushions, read by the light of a garden room

Maggie reads a set of teal velvet chair pads with off-white welts in full summer sun, and explains why the teal you choose at noon is not the teal you'll eat supper beside.

The quick answer

Teal velvet chair cushions change with the light: raking sun makes the pile glow bright and green, evening lamplight pulls it toward deep blue-gray, and a phone screen often shows neither. Judge a swatch on the chair at the hours you actually eat. For dining chairs a 2 in (5 cm) pad is the usual choice, and a chair cushion with ties stays put.

Swatch strip: one teal, three times of day

  • Morning teal#1F7A7ACool light from the garden doors; the velvet reads clean and a little green.
  • Sun on the gusset#2FA39ARaking sun lifts the pile along the front face until it almost glows.
  • Evening teal#164B55Warm lamps and low light push it toward deep blue-gray.
  • Off-white welt#F1EDE3Matched to the painted chairs; it draws the box outline in sunlight.
  • Painted chair white#F6F4EEThe slat backs give the teal a clean frame.
  • Garden green#5E7F45The color outside the doors that makes teal feel at home.
  • Sunlit oak#C8A06AWarm floorboards balance all that cool color.

Why the teal looks different at breakfast and at supper

The light in this photo does most of the work. Summer sun pours through open French doors and rakes across the front cushion, so the velvet pile glows along the deep front face and the off-white cord stands out sharp at the corner. That is velvet's trick: the same dye looks lighter where the pile catches light and darker where it leans away.

Now move the chair through a day. At breakfast, cool light from the garden makes the teal read greener and cleaner. In low evening sun or under warm lamps, the same cushion drops toward deep blue-gray. On a phone, all bets are off; many screens push saturation, and a teal that looks like a peacock online can arrive looking like a pine forest. Colors that match in one light and part ways in another have a name, metamerism, and it catches careful people every week.

The room makes the case for teal on its own. The garden outside the doors is the color link. The slat-back chairs are painted white, and the off-white welt repeats them; it runs dead straight along the front, and a straight welt is a kind of honesty. Oak floorboards add warmth under all that cool. Behind the front chair the same cushion repeats on every seat, with a linen throw over one. One accent, repeated, becomes a scheme.

My test: tape a swatch to a chair and look at it at the hour you actually eat. Which meal do you sit down to most? The screen versus daylight pattern goes step by step, and the velvets themselves hang on the velvet shelf.

A real project

A floor couch that arrived as four pieces

A buyer in the US ordered a velvet floor couch at 18 x 36 in (45 x 90 cm), expecting a single piece, and was upset when what arrived looked like two pillows. The set is always loose modules: one backrest, one seat cushion and two bolster armrests, each made at the chosen size.

To put it right, the shop remade the whole 4-piece set free of charge, this time in burnt orange velvet instead of the original mustard, and the buyer updated their review.

The lesson belongs on every order form: count the pieces and check each size before you pay. Velvet is generous, but it can't turn four modules into one. The floor couch set sizes list what comes in the box, and chair pads start in the dining chair cushion atlas.

Buyer questions: a terrace set, a parent's comfort, a shaped seat

  1. A common question

Is there a discount if I order a lot of chair cushions, say eleven for my terrace?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. For eleven chair cushions of about 15.75 x 18 x 2 in (40 x 46 x 5 cm) with double piping and ties, the shop lowered its quote as a bulk discount.

  2. A common question

How thick should outdoor chair pads and a bench cushion be for an older parent who sits for a long time?

    The workshop's answer

For chairs, 2 in (5 cm) is the most suitable, with 3 or 4 in (7.5 or 10 cm) possible. For a bench used for long sitting, 4 in (10 cm) gives the best support, with 3 in (7.5 cm) as an alternative, and back cushions can be thinner, around 2 in (5 cm).

  3. A common question

Can you make shaped armchair cushions, narrower at the back with a rounded front?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, but shaped cushions go through the trapezoid listing, with a photo of the old cushion and all measurements, for example a 19 in (48 cm) back, 17 in (43 cm) sides, a 22 in (56 cm) curved front, 20 in (51 cm) at the center and 4.75 in (12 cm) thick. One order placed through the rectangular listing was canceled with a full refund and reordered correctly, since shaped cushions are priced differently.

Teal velvet looks greener in morning light and bluer under evening lamps, so judge a chair cushion swatch on the chair at the hour you eat.

Questions buyers ask next

Why does one velvet cushion show two or three shades in sunlight?

Velvet has a pile of short fibers standing up from the weave. Where the pile faces the light it reflects and looks paler; where it leans away it absorbs light and looks deeper. Raking sun makes the difference obvious.

Should dining chair piping match the chair frame or the cushion?

Match the chair when you want the cushion to look built in. Here an off-white welt repeats the white painted chairs, so the teal reads as a clean box with a crisp outline instead of a loose block of color.

Can I trust a fabric color I see on my phone?

Only roughly. Screens vary and many boost saturation, so a teal can look brighter online than it will in a dining room. Order a swatch and judge it on the chair, in the room's own light, at mealtimes.

How many chairs need the teal cushion for the color to work?

All of them. One teal seat looks like an accident; the same cushion on every chair turns the color into a scheme, especially when something outside the window, such as a garden, repeats it.
